another 6 to 9' of snow, white out conditions and....

Here in the Philly area we just finished shoveling this morning's snow which then turned to sleet and ice. But now they're forecasting more snow - 9 to 12 inches, white out conditions, freezing whatever and my favorite - thunder. We don't get too many Thunder Snowstorms.

Aren't we lucky! I guess we won't be using our theater tickets for opening night of David Mamet's Race.

Watch out NY it's coming your way next.

We only got 4 inches here outside of Pittsburgh.
Many here were wishing for more...

Just came in from shoveling; it is soooo pretty!

Oh, dear! Is everybody safe at home? Be careful!

Once again, NEPA is dodging the bullet. They're calling for only 1-3" overnight. And my upstairs bathroom water is running again!

If I was stil in Denver I would have been starting my seeds indoors by now... March is typically the snowiest month for Colorado. Either with multiple snowy days or sometimes March is when we get the worst blizzard or two. I have been living overseas for a little over 7 years now though.. 1 year in Australia and 6 years in UAE :) When I first moved away from Denver I thought "Yes!! I never have to deal with snow again!" But when it is 115F in the middle of summer and super humid I miss the snow like crazy! Incidentally, it snowed in Saudi Arabia the other day... here are a couple of neat photos that were in the newspaper from the other day :)

All of your bouquet descriptions sound lovely! I would have liked to use fresh flowers for my wedding, but cost and season were against me... I wish I had pictures of the ones I did... but we lost everything in the fire. I think the only wedding memory that survived is a video tape that a friend did for us... I should have some still shots taken from it so I at least have some photos... I used white and burgundy roses, white mums, baby's breath, variegated and green English ivy, and lots of old fashioned lace, ribbon and pearls. I began with the standard florists foam bouquet form, available at Michael's or Hobby Lobby, and began adding the silk flowers, largest first... then tucking in all the smaller picks and pieces. I made little picks of lace ribbon and tiny pearls, wrapped in a bit of lace, and tucked those in between the roses and mums, and the bouquet trailed off with lace ribbon and ivy... My bouquet was mainly white with some burgundy, and the bridesmaids had mostly burgundy with less white... I also made the boutoneers, card box, guest book, table centerpieces, wedding arch, sets of sterling and pearl jewelry for all my girls... I decorated the hall myself, everything was done in white and burgundy tulle and flowers with little white Christmas lights and swags of English ivy and roses, and candles on all the tables... I made my own veil, and even decorated my shoes with spray glue and lace pieces. I got a plain pair of white heels at Sears for five bucks! The cake was a marble full sheet with Burgundy frosted roses on white whipped cream frosting... I think the most expensive part of the wedding was my dress, and I got that on sale! My wedding was everything I wanted it to be, and then some! And the cost was very low! I bet you just love creating wedding flowers and arrangements for special occasions! I would love to do it, myself, but I know if it got too stressful or too busy, I wouldn't enjoy it anymore... but to just create the bouquets and sell them, I would enjoy...

Hi Mmedici, Funny you should say that. Most nursery sites that I've seen rate them as hardy in zones 5 - 9...I have SnowQueen, Alice and the species Quercifolia. (still waiting for Little Honey) So far, they all seem happy & healthy. Oakleafs are probably my favorite hydrangea and SnowQueen is my favorite Oakleaf (so far). I like the more upright form and the mix of orange, red and burgandy fall color. A bonus of zone 9 is that short of extraodinary weather/exposure conditions, a good deal of the leaves hang on until new ones replace them in Spring, so it's not necessarily deciduous down here. I gather from reading other posts from CA, that your zone 9 is not necessarily the same as my FL zone 9. I think CA zone 9 is cooler and less humid than FL, so you should be able to grow them beautifully providing you have a good hot summer. Another thing to consider is, some sites will say that they can tolorate 'full sun' and maybe they can up north but I would never even consider planting them in full sun down here. Gardengal is right about their water requirements too. The Oakleafs are my only hydrangeas that don't keep me constantly running around with a hose!! (after they are established) All they ask is very good drainage. They require considerably little effort for such a huge return. Coeur d'Alene had 127 inches of snow by yesterday and then a little more fell. This was a new seasonal record and nearly double normal. Seems like when I lived right in town about 30 years ago, there was more snow to deal with. I think that might be true but with a certain amount of melting, some drifting, and days of shoveling - it's real hard to make much sense out of the landscape. I'm considering "burrowing" next. There were winds of 35 - 40 mph with gusts near 50, today. Lots of roads in and out of communities in the Columbia Basin are closed because of drifting and white-out conditions. I think it is now going to turn to rain except for up where you are, Margaret. And, even western MT may get rain by Sunday. Hopefully, there won't be very much. digitS'

Spent a good bit of the morning snowblowing the mess from last night. now the roads are wet, there are ice balls coming down, and yes--another foot of flakes on the way. Hope that snowblower holds up--I can't imagine having to shift all that mess with a shovel.

This morning I called to cancel my appt. (for tomorrow) to register Aunt's will with the Surrogate's office--and the gal I spoke to said they were hoping everyone called to cancel. They planned to start calling people in the afternoon to see if they'd be interested in rescheduling. Can't blame them--it's going to be a real mess tomorrow morning.

Started out sleet, rain and then snow here in DE. When the snow started it was coming down real hard, but by the time I went to bed had tapered off. Officially we got 3 inches in Dover, but the upper part of the state got hammered.

I'm not being picky, but I got a laugh at your title. The normal notation for inches is ("). The normal notation for feet is ('). If you had 6-9 feet of snow, there is no way you could see through it and it definitely would be white out conditions.

Very good peonies - I feel lucky we only received 12 to 18 inches. I've been outside most of the morning because my husband insisted on going to work. We got the driveway cleared but he couldn't leave until the streets were plowed. He finally left around 9:30.

I think NYC got 19" - at least that's what I heard on the news this morning.

This year is nuts - there are very few places in the world that have not suffered extreme weather. I check out a few weather channels - each gives a different report - that way they are never wrong. But it never fails, when I am out and it is not supposed to snow - bingo. I have shovelled a lot and we had record low temperatures in Toronto and now it is milder but still below freezing so of course the slush is turning to ice so I have been out chopping away so that we won't have snow over rough ice - I fell twice last winter and cracked my head big time - but not on our property. I have been going through Salt Alternative big time. But it could be worse, we could be living in the Maritimes and not Toronto.

We got about 8 more inches here in Phila suburb. Township got plows as soon as it stopped. They came down our street around 4AM, and when we got up later, DH got the snow blower out right away and cleared the driveway. Plows came back a couple of time in the morning, and driveway entrance was kept clear.

Had no trouble getting out by 11am and all streets were clear and dry to Collegeville Wegman's.

We had well over another foot last night. DH normally leaves for work at about 6:30. I got up at 5:30 to dig out his truck while he ate breakfast. Within 5 minutes, I was back in the house, telling him he'd better call out--his truck was so plowed in, there was no way the two of us were going to be able to dig it out. And he's got 5 leftover weeks of vacay time from last year PLUS 6 and a half for this year!!!! But did he call out? Of course not. He WALKED to work (a mile and a half--not bad in nice weather, but.....)

So I spent most of the morning and about half the afternoon snowblowing the driveways, a couple of sidewalks and then digging out his truck by hand.

I have had more than enough of this mess for this year! This is no way for 2 60-year-olds to live!!! And tomorrow night, we'll have to load up the snow blower, head to the country house and start the process all over again--only we have a LOT more driveway down there.
