Do you have central heating/ac? I wouldn't think that if you are in a climate controlled situation, it wouldn't be a problem. I would think that a slab door would be less of a problem than, say, a shaker type door, which would be inset within the frame. That center inset interacting with the frame within might become unstable with a variation in humidity.

But once again, if you have central heat and AC, I don't think it would be much to worry about. I'm in NC Florida, in previous houses had slab doors without probs.

We have AC and central heat but I have to admit I prefer going without the AC as much as possible. I love open windows.

The slab doors in our north Florida home were installed in 1939. The house went for years without air conditioning, I imagine (we moved in in 1975). Since then we air condition lightly in the summer (above 80 degrees for 4 months.) Doors still fit fine.

Our old kitchen had slab doors that withstood 20-30 years of Houston's 'delightful' humidity, including at least two summers without A/C...

our bathroom has slab doors on the cabs as does our linen closet. and our house was built in 1962.

My old kitchen had slab plank doors on standard hinges on face framed cabinets that didn't care because they were overlay. Is that what we're talking about?

Or Euro style with only 1/8" separating them?

Partial overlay slab should be fine without question so long as they don't swell enough to pull away from the hinge screws.

Are these older doors really slab? Or are they plywood? Ply probably doesn't move as much because of all of the glue...

Veneered slab doors over cabinet grade partical board, MDF or plywood should be just fine. That's what you most commonly will find in most cabinet lines. Or solid wood pieced ones ones with battens on the rear would be fine, although subject to expansion and contraction more than the veneer. Solid wood slabs from pieces that are carefully matched with reversing graincan be fine, but those will be the most expensive and the most custom. I would not trust solid wood pieced doors from a production cabinet line unless they had battens on the rear to stabilize them.

As with any wood, it will expand and contract in the presence of varying moisture levels. That may leave you with rubbing in summer and some gapping in winter. If you've owned homes with wood floors, you'll be familiar with the syndrome. If you want to minimize these issues, your best bet is to run a humdifier in the winter and always use your AC in the summer.

I was looking at cherry solid slab doors from Schuler. I really am accepting of life's imperfections but people speak so terribly against wood slab doors in humid places that I thought I would ask here.

The doors would be full overlay.

So..what's the conclusion, guys?

Holligator has cherry doors from a local cabinet maker -- he is who I am going to use, as his quality is excellent, the product is beautiful, he stands behind his product . . . and he's in lovely Alachua county! And, by the way, several K's less for custom cabs.

I did search before I asked my orig question. I found that Plllog and Live Wire Oak gave helpful opinions re florida humidity and slab doors but I would like the question framed as veneer v. solid.

And not incidentally, these will be maple slab frameless stained. Thank you all again.
