A few minor complications, but they released him today. He is cut from neck to ankle, feeling pretty sore on that leg where they harvested the vein. Good to have him home, now the real work begins, getting him active again. Told us depression is one of the side effects, getting him to eat is going to be another. He is afraid to put anything in his mouth because it might not be good for lowering his cholesterol. He's 20# underweight, so getting calories in him will require an act of congress!! Thanks for all the support, it helps to know others were pulling for us, to lighten the load.

I'll make a long story short, he decided to help with my side(I was counting on that) He scraped for two minutes and decided to get out the grinder(I counted on that)He cut an old wire that was in the way(I wasn't counting on that)and after jury rigging, our telephone is now only sortta working again! Lucky you!!!! Cooking this is dead easy. While it roasts, you have time to do the sides. Be sure to bring the meat to room temperature before cooking and salt about it about 4 hours before or even overnight. It makes a big difference. You can even put the mustard glaze on in the beginning to help form a nice crust. Serve with a potato gratin and some fresh asparagus or a creamed spinach. Standing Rib/Prime Rib roast 1/3 cup Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon chopped thyme leaves 2 teaspoons coarsely ground pepper Kosher salt 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil One 5-rib 12- to 13-pound prime rib roast, chine bone removed Preheat the oven to 450ÃÂ°. In a small bowl, mix the mustard with the garlic, thyme, pepper and 2 teaspoons of kosher salt. Whisk in the olive oil. Set the meat, bone side down, in a roasting pan and season it lightly with salt. Roast the meat in the lower third of the oven for 20 minutes. Remove the meat from the oven and reduce the temperature to 350ÃÂ°. Brush the mustard coating all over the top and sides of the meat and roast for about 1 1/2 hours longer, rotating the roasting pan 2 or 3 times for even browning. The meat is done when an instant-read thermometer inserted in the center of the roast at the thickest part registers 120ÃÂ° (for medium rare). Transfer the roast to a carving board, cover it loosely with foil and let rest for 20 to 30 minutes. Set the roast on its side and run a long, sharp knife between the bones and meat; remove the bones and set them aside. Turn the roast right side up. Carve the roast 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and transfer the slices to warmed plates. Pour any carving juices over the meat and serve at once. For bone-gnawing carnivores, cut down between the rib bones and pass them on a plate. *If the bones are not cut loose by the butcher, do so with a very sharp knife and tie them back on. Enjoy your feast. This is the same way I did 4 roasts for about 60 people for Dads 75th birthday.

Thanks everyone for your advice/opinions. The real estate agent said she knew someone who would do the work cheaper than what the 1st termite inspector quoted. She said she would get a quote for us but of course she brought him over to get a quote and he did a VERY thorough inspection, whereas the 1st inspector didn't move things to be very thorough. I guess the 1st inspector did more of a superficial inspection. I'm sure this 2nd inspector is a good "businessman" and knew from experience that he could find more damage than an initial inspector would or he was at least determined to look for more damage. That's just IMHO. I mean, anyone can come in after someone else and find "different" things. DH is going to pay for repairs. I told him to get a different contractor but he doesn't want the hassle and is supposed to close on 3/30. Being cynical like I am, I just find the whole thing suspicious. 1st report=no "active" termites, 2nd report=active termites that will swarm come warm weather. How are they active when it's been 20 degrees outside? We have to close on the 30th as we are also closing on our new house that afternoon. Honestly, I don't know how people buy and sell houses every few years. It's enough to give one cardiac arrest!!!

Glad he is home and doing well.Try making him some milkshakes with lots of calories! Use fresh fruits,low fat milk,yogurt.Anything that is low in cholesterol but high in calories.How can anyone turn down a milkshake? LOL

I understand what you are saying about the possibility of depression. Maybe look up tasty low cholesterol recipes together? Maybe establish a routine - day one walk 100 paces, day two 2 100 pace walks, day 3 three 100 pace walks, or whatever he can do.

Maybe do puzzles together, watch movies that you have never seen, establish a goal like by Easter to be able to go out and walk the yard or down the block. Do you have binoculars to watch the birds and other outside critters?

Is he scheduled for physical/cardiac therapy?

Take good care and post often.

Great news! Try not to let him get bored. Does he have any hobbies that he could be tempted by for getting him motivated? Say maybe set a goal of being able to go golfing by summer, or fishing, or something like that? Something to spark interest in short term goals? Someplace that he would like to be able to go in two-three weeks? Yes, I know two weeks is pushing it, but it's a suggestion to set small goals, more than saying to take him somewhere that soon. If he's not scheduled for physical/cardiac therapy as hostapasta asked, get him scheduled even if the dr. doesn't say he HAS to have it. He will improve more quickly if he goes. Besides, it's something for him to look forward to. I'll continue good thoughts.

i was just thinking the same thing as hostapasta..get the heart assn cookbook and plan meals together...does your hosp have a wellnss center?

did they say he would still be on cholesterol drugs? my uncle was, despite diet change and walking program after surgery...something about his system...

I'm so glad for both of you.

There are many good sites on the net too for recipes like the Mayo clinic, Heart and Stroke foundation. And don't forget the library...you don't have to buy books.

My father was a cardiac patient since a very young age. Dinner at our house was always good. It's funny how you can adapt to small changes. Recipes can be adjusted too.

One step at a time. One day. It's a new lease on life.

Pawsitive, How old is your husband? The reason I ask is my Mom's doctor told her she was far to thin, if she gets sick she has no resources to fall back on". I told him Doctors have her scared to eat anything because of Cholesterol. He told her she was to old for Cholesterol to be a problem. She was in her early 70's then. I have had two other doctors and a nurse tell me the same thing. Mom was so happy when he told her that. She was missing the food she was raised on, especially whole milk.

BTW if you get the heart association cook before sure it is an updated version, not a new printing of an older book. They have changed the diet, more red meat, etc..

I'm glad to hear he's home and doing well. My hubby was depressed as well. It is life-changing. Most hospitals have a heart support group. They are really good for support and would have recipes to share as well. My DH wouldn't go, though. Just be as supportive as you can and try to get him active without nagging. Sometimes you just have to be sneaky in ways to get him to cooperate, without him knowing what your ultimate motive is.

That sounds encouraging, Pawsitive. Does your hospital offer a support and therapy group for cardiac patients? My dad had a quadruple bypass last fall, I was really worried about him as my mom had just died the end of July. He started going to the therapy group, and then to the workout sessions twice a week. It's been good for him, they do lunch together and even had a holiday get together, some are single but most have spouses that also attend the functions. It's so good to see him socializing and sharing feelings with the group.
