Joined the Polar Club, today!

Finally pulled myself out of bed, and went to water aerobics.

brrrr

It's under the bubble, but getting there from locker room, and back to locker room, thru the cold air, kills you, even for just a couple seconds.

Did have to ask life guard to turn the air heater up a tad.

Think I'll pass on the Polar Club membership tomorrow, it's gonna be in the 20's when it's time to go to class.

Good for you! My mom does water aerobics year round and I don't know how she does it in the winter months!! BRRR!!

I already can check one resolution off the list. I have been meaning to try a new class at my gym. It's called Kangoo Jumps. Aerobics with these weird bouncy shoes. I attached a video, but somehow I don't look like those girls quite yet! LOL It was okay, the routine was a bit too much, as I was still getting used to the shoes. Might try it again who knows?

B'rrrrrrr!!!! One of my travel agent friends' daughter does a polar bear dip for MS each year, I always donate to her and she sends me a photo. Gosh it looks cold!!

Most of the 32 roses in my garden are zone 5 or lower with just a few zone 6. This is in Western NY along the Niagara river near Niagara Falls. The temps have been frigid single digit with high winds. Some days it it 25-30 miles an hours sustained for hours. The garden is 11 years old and this is the harshest winter yet. All the roses are own root. It will be interesting as to how they all do. Every time I shovel snow I heap it on the roses. What canes poke out are black. There will be heavy pruning this spring when ever it gets here. I usually do some pruning the start of April. This year I may wait till I see fat leaf buds ready to sprout. The snow is a great blessing as I keep telling myself as I clear another 2ft drift,lol We will all have to add an extra load of TLC this spring.

Being in NYC, I'm privileged to have lots of clubs to join. It's actually a battle not to belong to ALL of them! I was in my local C&S Society, for 10 yrs. 'til I had to leave due to bad politics of new leadership. I'm in my Indoor Gardening Society more than 10 yrs. now & on the Board of Directors for a few yrs. at least. Other than interesting speakers, we often have plant sale tables which rock. I've gotten most of my Sans. collections, 12 diff kinds & not a yellow stripe in the bunch ;>) from friends here & the plant sale table. I ended up giving a Sans talk to the whole Group (abt 40 people) in Feb. 06, w/ great help from our friend here Norma (Dufflebag, who I haven't seen around since end Dec?). I was assisted in demonstrating their potting by my now deceased Hoya mentor. Indoor Gardening overlaps w/ other Societies, like Begonia, Bromeliads, Gesneriads, etc. so they bring their extras or propagation results to share w/ us. It's where I got my first ZZ, of which I've grown 4 plants from either single leaves or bare stems. Also Euph milii moratii (which I've never seen available commercially). A friend & mentor who died in Sept. used to propagate both these plants for the group; I hope to take over that task for the Group in his memory. Recently we had a great talk by Hydro people from whom, I bought a large variegated Hoya kerrii which grows in leca stones & gets watered every 3 wks. Since Oct. it's doing great (notwithstanding the fact that I accidentally knocked it over last month, spilling Leca stones (little porous fired balls of clay, all over the floor & of course, breaking off the vine that had 3 peduncles on it ARGGGGGGG))! Last month I just came home w/ a rare Pelargonium dasyphyllum w/ fern like leaves, very nice! No fees have been paid for this endorsement ;>) Need any more reasons??

Juellie, not what I expected to read when I opened this thread. Dammit, I'm so sorry you lost your Mom. It doesn't matter if it's sudden, or drawn out, it hurts like hell. My Dad was sick for weeks before dying, 25 years ago. My Mom died 13 1/2 years ago in my arms, so suddenly it was stunning. There's nothing anyone can say or do to take this awful pain away. All I can tell you is time. Time is the only thing that will ease the "knocks you to your knees, mind numbing" pain. Talk to us all the time about your mom. Talk, and talk and talk some more. It helps. It helped me. I will pray for you that you can find peace. Hang on, and let time do its thing. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Who chooses the books? A librarian or "community relations"-type specialist, or the members of the book club? Some of my co-workers have a book club (I have so many "to be reads" on my bookshelves and in a list I keep that I passed on the book-club format, for now). Everybody, in time, gets to pick a book, but I think there's also an up/down vote taken.

Years ago my DH jumped into a frozen lake on New Years day with the Gypsy divers. Too cold for me! Now THAT'S for polar bears!

Our pool is under a bubble during winter, heated water and air. Not that bad, but going thru revolving doors from locker room, out in the cold air is a killer. Only a few seconds but COLD

The Polar Bear Club took their annual dip in Lake Michigan (Milwuakee, WI, lake front) on Jan 1, 2012. This was the 60th dip for an 80 year old. He said he's retiring - this is his last time.

That's not for me! I remember an experience I had with wading in near freezing water when I was a youngster. (My sister and I were returing home from school and found our way blocked by backwater from a flooding river in winter. The water was no more than 4 inches deep over a gravel road. But we had to hoof it barefoot for 1/8 mile to pass though.) After that, I decided I'd avoid wading in cold water. It was too painful.

Glenda, I rode my bike on New Years Day of course... :) with the local bike club. Yesterday I rode to work, and plan the same for today.

I really don't exercise anymore, since I got the job at Home Depot. So much walking is involved, including up and down their ladders... and who needs weight lifting, when you lift mulch, rocks or sand in heavy bags???

On days that I don't work, I usually try to get by the hospital and walk all the way up and back down. Stair stepping is a great work out. For that, I also walk almost a half mile from the parking garage down to the concourse, and all the way over to the high towers to do the stairs, and back of course.

Thus, yes, I do exercise.

Glenda, get a nice heavy, long robe to wear between the building and the bubble. Worked for DD when she was teaching at the Y.

Way too cold to get out in this cold weather. I'm sure some people showed up at the pool, but NOT ME!

Linda, I do wear a terrycloth robe to and from the pool. It helps :o)

Glenda, you are so brave! You wouldn't get me out in cold weateher at all. Yesterday it was 47, this morning it's 28 here in long Island. Gonna be cold tomorrow, too!
