Nice catch, Jo. We don't get vendors coming to our club meetings - only to our annual show/sale. We used to have the owner of Aridlands as a member, and he would bring a flat of plants to give to members each month, which was nice. But alas, he moved to Ecuador, so that doesn't happen anymore... But joining a club has a lot of advantages. First, you can learn a lot from the more experienced growers. And it's nice to have people you can discuss your plants with who don't act as if you're speaking a foreign language! I wish I'd joined many, many years before I did!

I have often thought about joining the CSSM up here - just not sure how active it is. Can I really find selections of great plants to purchase like this at these meetings? Anyone on this forum belong to the one in MA?

Jo is the hot area for these plants being brought the to the meets. Up north the group I belong to rarely is anything like this offered and if it is it's usually me offering it ;0) Most the time it's common stuff.

We're having a silent auction at today's meet to raise money for summer events. I'm bringing Uncarina roeoeslina, Pachy "Arid Lands", Tylecodon paniculatus and reticulata, Ceraria pygmaea, Bursera simplifolia and an Aloe polyphylla...and fried rice for the potluck to follow.

I joined my local club in November, and am glad I did. :) Wish I had joined 2 years ago when I started getting into C&S.

I really enjoy my local group in Fort Worth. Lot of fun and nice people. Next meeting - Feb 17, 7pm, Botanical Gardens.
We have raffles nearly every meeting with members bringing in spare plants. Plus a great bingo game twice a year. For a one dollar card you usually win about 6 plants or books by the end of the game. My club is big on succulents which makes me happy. Members are very generous bringing plants in.
We have great speakers and photographers also within the club.

Being in NYC, I'm privileged to have lots of clubs to join. It's actually a battle not to belong to ALL of them! I was in my local C&S Society, for 10 yrs. 'til I had to leave due to bad politics of new leadership.

I'm in my Indoor Gardening Society more than 10 yrs. now & on the Board of Directors for a few yrs. at least. Other than interesting speakers, we often have plant sale tables which rock.

I've gotten most of my Sans. collections, 12 diff kinds & not a yellow stripe in the bunch ;>) from friends here & the plant sale table.

I ended up giving a Sans talk to the whole Group (abt 40 people) in Feb. 06, w/ great help from our friend here Norma (Dufflebag, who I haven't seen around since end Dec?). I was assisted in demonstrating their potting by my now deceased Hoya mentor.

Indoor Gardening overlaps w/ other Societies, like Begonia, Bromeliads, Gesneriads, etc. so they bring their extras or propagation results to share w/ us.

It's where I got my first ZZ, of which I've grown 4 plants from either single leaves or bare stems. Also Euph milii moratii (which I've never seen available commercially). A friend & mentor who died in Sept. used to propagate both these plants for the group; I hope to take over that task for the Group in his memory.

Recently we had a great talk by Hydro people from whom, I bought a large variegated Hoya kerrii which grows in leca stones & gets watered every 3 wks. Since Oct. it's doing great (notwithstanding the fact that I accidentally knocked it over last month, spilling Leca stones (little porous fired balls of clay, all over the floor & of course, breaking off the vine that had 3 peduncles on it ARGGGGGGG))!

Last month I just came home w/ a rare Pelargonium dasyphyllum w/ fern like leaves, very nice!

I can't get to all the meetings but I go when my schedule allows. Today's event was fun, watching everyone clamber about the plants I brought. Seemed like most were after the "Arid Lands" and a good friend ended up with it. Weren't any plants I was interested in so all my attention was on the sweet table. Came home plenty of rice krispy treats and oatmeal cookies!

Next month is the water and vinegar program presented by Elton Roberts. April I'm doing a hands-on root pruning course, then a follow up in June on pot selection and staging.
