Gee, I wonder how that delicious looking dish of Spam and limas would taste when enhanced with some parsnips?

Glad to hear there are others out there that hate lima beans as much as I do. Not sure if I have ever had Spam....not sure that I want to even try Spam.

That is truly an abomination! Lima beans are one of few foods that I simply can not gag down. I'd politely eat a few if I had to. I can't eat Spam, either. Oh, it tastes okay (all that fat and salt) going down but the resulting all day indigestion simply isn't worth it. After all our talk here of Spam one time I decided to try some. With enough Dijon mustard I got it down. Never again!

Food isn't supposed to have radiused corners.

For a while Hormel was running Spam commercials on the radio. I don't eat the stuff anymore, but I have to admit, the one interviewing real people on the street, asking them what they thought Spam was made of, was hysterical! One person laughed and only half-jokingly said, "I thought maybe Spam came from Spaminals?"

I love almost any bean, especially fresh fava beans, but lima beans just never interested me much.

If you ever really want some laughs, buy this book by Kathy Casey with original retro recipes. I drag it out for parties every once in a while, especially for Millennials who have never even imagined food such as Liver Sausage Bon-Bons (liver sausage smashed up with chopped stuffed olives); Orange Jello with Pretzel Crust (broken-up pretzels, margarine, orange jello, pineapple and Cool Whip); and of course that quintessential party dish, the Crown Roast of Frankfurters!

My mother used to serve Spam, usually fried, when I was a kid and we happily ate it. I tried it recently - I just don't like it. And with canned lima beans!!??

It certainly served a purpose when times were tough and when meat was rationed, but...........

Spam gives me such terrible heart burn I won't touch it again.

What's wrong with me? I love lima beans.

I love lima beans, and I always have some in the freezer, but I also buy them dried. They are one of my favorite vegetables. I'm a lot less familiar with Spam - I don't remember having it (and never bought any), but then I generally don't buy canned meat. My mother used to buy canned Vienna Sausage, which I hated and thought that Spam would probably be similar. I've had canned paté that I liked, and so if Spam is like that, then I might like it.

I actually like limas now, and it's funny because they were one of the FEW foods I hated as a child. Now I like them. For me it was the texture, and mom just served them plain. The secret to my new affinity for lima beans it to mix them with other flavors and textures. One way I make them is mixed with bacon bits and eggs, which is not that far off from spam. That's a french way of serving them, so I'm sure that was the inspiration for the spam and limas idea. I would perhaps CUBE the spam for adding to a lima bean dish.

Christy likes Spam and we got home late tonight after taking one of the cats to the vet so she made herself Spam sandwich. Me,... I have Genoa salami and provolone on a half torp. I don't care for Spam but could eat it if had to as long as it is 'cooked' very well done. Not too thick either. It's so salty though, it's hard for me to eat, and I'm a salt head.

Funny, but I love dried limas but don't care for them frozen, fresh or canned. Lima bean soup is one of my faves or just stewed like butter beans is good too. LOL.. just remembered I used to cry when my Mother would take corn off the cob to make succotash... funny... I just thought that was a terrible thing to do to my fave corn on the cob..kids.

coconut-nj, I'm the same way. I'm fine with the dried lima beans, they just seam like any other dried legume. But growing up, one of my mother's favorite vegetable choices was the bag of frozen mixed vegetables that included lima beans. Even as a kid, I loved veggies, and would eat all the others, but the lima beans got picked out. It wasn't the flavor, it was that odd, gritty/dry texture.

Years ago, they came out with "less salt SPAM" and I thought I'd split something laughing. I wondered if they took the salt out, would there be anything left? Oh yeah, the fat. :D

I love lima beans , my sister however hated them with a passion. My father had a huge garden and during harvest, it was our job to shell them so Mom could (can) "put them up for winter". If you have ever shelled bushel baskets of limas you know your thumbs ache beyond belief, so sis was whining and complaining! Dad to sis "when there is snow on the ground you will be happy to have these, it will be better than eating a snowball" Winter came, we were we all at the table and lima beans were included in the meal. Out of nowhere sister looks at Dad and says "You know what, I think I would rather eat a snowballÂ. To this day we still laugh about the look on Dads face.

The only canned "mixed vegetables" I have ever really liked was Green Giant, because it did not contain lima beans. However, sadly, Green Giant quit canning the "mixed vegetables."

Don't laugh :-), it's actually not too bad.
The wine draws out the salt, and the balsamic vinegar changes the Spam taste to something very different.

I sometimes do the same with hotdogs to make a dish.

Also let me tell you how I do the asparagus. Sometimes people think I spend way too much time arranging food.

I tied a rubber band around the aspargus, microwave them. The asparagus became soft, I then just place them on the dish. It took no time to do.

Growing up on a farm, we raised almost all of our own food.

As a kid, I thought any kind of "store-bought' anything was a rare and special treat.
That included Spam.
I liked it then, and I like it now.
Preferably sliced thin and fried crispy.

I also like lima beans, especially those big "Fordhook" limas

Everyone knows that ham or bacon or salt pork goes really good with any kind of bean, so why not Spam & limas?

Got to admit, though, that picture is not very appetizing.
Too bad they didn't have dcarch doing their presentations. :>)

I think you could improve the presentation by adding some chick peas! I hate chick peas in any form far more than I hate limas. One of my sons eats both and I am firmly convinced he was switched in the hospital immediately after birth!

Nope, I couldn't eat it. I don't like Spam OR hotdogs, so that wouldn't save it either. I don't like wine, so simmering the detested Spam in white wine would only make it worse, not better.

I don't mind the little baby lima beans but the big, dry and mealy ones are not possible, the texture is too bad. I will eat chickpeas but I don't like very much heat, so the chili peppers are out too!

I could eat the asparagus, though.....
