I like the looks of it better than a kitty litter cake.

Many may have the recipe, but as one subjected to this cake before - please don't!

I have seen more than a few guests trying not to gag.

I made dirt cakes for my kids once, they were quite amused. Kitty litter doesn't appeal as much. But I do remember seeing a movie where someone threw a Tootsie Roll in the pool to gross people out. Bill Murray was in it.

Thanks Susanjf. There will be other cakes at the party. No one knows I am bringing this. It is actually a party for 2 honorees. One will be 40 and the other 30. I expect a good number of attendees will be college students. I will post a picture and tell you the reactions after the party. I have been wanting to make this cake for several years and just needed the right audience for it.

I made one several years ago and took it to a Halloween potluck dinner. It was a huge hit and the crowd ranged in age from 20 to 80 or so. I handed out recipes for the longest time and a lot of them thanked me for making the party more fun. And the cake tasted good, that was a bonus. I also added little "puddles" of honey water. It looked very realistic and it was a major hoot.

I like the way the dirt cake looks. Made it several times, vs the kitty litter. That one is no my flavor :o)

I watched the kitty litter cake video, and it just doesn't look like it would taste good at all. The dirt cake can be tastey.

I think that the kitty litter cake is hilarious! And for a cat lover, especially. What a hoot, Linda. No one will EVER forget this birthday. I'd probably pee my pants if someone showed up with a cake like that for my birthday. I may have to make one for Robert.

The kitty litter cake I made used a spiced cake mix, crumbled up, with crumbled up vanilla sandwich cookies and vanilla pudding mixed into it, as I recall. It was very moist and yummy. Once the tootsie rolls are heated and shaped and cooled, they are not very edible, they are way too hard. (FYI)

I've had the dirt cake and it's also good but seems more like a summer time dessert to me. A friend served it when we came to dinner and she had a silk gerbera daisy coming out of the pots and that was so cute!

Surely few would be so literalist that they couldn't see the fun in it to the point of gagging?

(Tell them to go to their rooms ... well, another room, anyway.)

I Know I'm late to the party but...
I made the kitty litter cake for my boss the veterinarian. The staff loved it. I made it in 2 layers instead of all crumbled up. It was tasty and not so dry. I used Kahlua for wet spots.
