Notes on New Years Eve

1. Took hubby out for dinner, at a cute steak and seafood place on Long Island Sound. He had duck, I chose shrimp and crabmeat. Too full for dessert, but I had a Jamaican Coffee (like Irish coffee). Waitress was a doll, even chased me to the parking lot to give me my doggie bag-half the duck, two big shrimps. Good thing I left her a nice tip.

2. Got home before midnight, climbed in bed with My sweetie. Watched all the New Years Ball Drops. Lady Gaga was amazing/amusing as usual, but Dick Clark looks bad, tired and drawn, like he never fully recovered from that stroke.

3. The phone rang just after Midnight, it was my younger daughter wishing me Happy New Year-Did you see The Ball drop? How many drinks did you have at dinner? (Three)What a Good Kid, but then she's always been my buddy.

Our New Year's Eve was nice. Had the meal at Amber and Mike's. There were 9 of us plus the baby. We ate and visited and played with Alyssa. We were home by ten, then went right to bed.Daughter Terri called and wished us Happy New Year's Eve as they were elsewhere for the evening.

Stayed home watched the different "drops" including the MOON PIE drop Went out in front and rattled the pans at midnight quiet in the neighborhood with aa few firecrackers near bye

Terri, I love sparkling grape juice and we always have it at family dinners but I did not think to get some for tonight. Ann, I just happened to catch the Barefoot Contessa last week and she made the Green Goddess dressing. It just sounded so good to me...well anything with a c. of fresh basil suits me just fine! This is a very refreshing and just plain GOOD salad dressing. Basil Green Goddess Dressing 1 cup good mayonnaise 1 cup chopped scallions, white and green parts (6 to 7 scallions) 1 cup chopped fresh basil leaves 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons and see My Note) 2 teaspoons chopped garlic (2 cloves) 2 teaspoons anchovy paste 2 teaspoons kosher salt (see note) 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 cup sour cream Salad: 3 heads Bibb lettuce 2 to 3 tomatoes Place the mayonnaise, scallions, basil, lemon juice, garlic, anchovy paste, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. Add the sour cream and process just until blended. (If not using immediately, refrigerate the dressing until ready to serve.) Cut each head of lettuce into quarters, remove some of the cores, and arrange on 6 salad plates. Cut the tomatoes into wedges and add to the plates. Pour on the dressing and serve. NOTES: I did not add any salt to this recipe due to the anchovy paste. Also, I got a 1/4 c. juice from just half a lemon and a small lemon at that! Michelle

Thank you. As I recall we had a record high of 80 last Sunday (1 January). Tonight and tomorrow night (6 and 7 /January) will get down to 24 and 26, then back up into the 60/70s after that. The ground is always workable. The lows are very short in duration. The day temps normally warm everything back up. This is a great time to garden. Weeds grow slow, and no mosquitoes. It is a gardeners paradise from oct to march. April, May and June starts to warm up. July, August and Sept are too hot and too many bugs. In the recent past, I tried a second tomato season in late fall. Looking back, it makes no sense to try to grow in July, Aug, Sept when it is so effortless now. Of course, I can't grow tomatoes now. I am thinking I will just grow extra tomatoes in the normal season and freeze the extra. The ones I froze from last summer did real good in Sauces. I don't have a lot of time to can/make sauce to freeze, but I can always make time to quarter tomatoes and throw them in a bag in the freezer. The sweet white turnips, hakerie (name is close to that), are one of the lesser cold hardy varieties. They are very tastee, especially roasted with the carrots. I have a small patch of them and few remain. I will cover them. Everything else is very hardy and remains uncovered: Kale,broccoli, collards,onions, carrots and Lettuce. I expect some Lettuce losses, as there are many varieties. I expect half to survive just fine. I watered real good yesterday getting ready for the cold snap.

All very tame at my place :-) Grazed through an assortment of leftover hors oeuvres for dinner, accompanied by my new favorite holiday tipple, prosecco and pomegranate juice. Watched the Inspector Lynley mysteries and dozed off. Managed to wake at around 11, watched the news and then the start of our local celebration at the Space Needle. But it was too blustery to set off the fireworks (according to the fire marshall) and the accompanying light show that replaced them was a bit of a letdown. Could hear fireworks going off in the neighborhood but not really any big deal. Texted the fam a happy NY, gave the dog a puperoni treat and called it a decade :-))

What a lovely New Year’s Eve you had Mtn! You looked great— what jumpsuit could look dull paired with those stunning pearls? Love the people pictures, the red dress and the usher’s cape and even the leopard and plaid combo, it all adds to the festive look of the crowd in general. The guy wearing a velvet blazer and mask— was his tie gold lame? Hard to tell from the picture, but his shoes are certainly fabulous. And your view of Broadway, nice! Funky your evening also sounds very successful, you pulled off a complicated dinner looking beautiful I’m sure— you can’t go wrong with black and gold!

I was home alone, no big deal. My son and family were supposed to come over for a New Year's drink, but then we had that episode with the ashes in my living room....

I went to bed around 11:15 and was still reading when somebody set off a stick of dynamite on a nearby property. Ye gods! The whole house shook, and I ran downstairs and out to the porch to see if a building had come down. Fortunately, nothing had.

So that was my New Year's Eve excitement. :-)

Talked to my cousin, sister of the cousin I was so close to that passed away, we laughed and cried for quite some time. Our friends from church did not stop by but another did, ones we had not seen for a long while, a few years, so it was great to catch up. We were so close for a very long time but then just seemed to drift apart, he was working out of town all week and she changed jobs, I was working at my office but also as at the mall so had little free time. It was fun to rekindle the friendship, we went thru some very tough times together.

We went out with friends for the first time in many years. It was very nice, I had a good time but I enjoy staying home.

Had dinner out but got home at 10 and watched Anderson Cooper switching over to Dick Clark. Boring.

Yes those New Years Eve broadcasts are all boring. I even remember Guy Lombardo. Dates me born 1952, will be turning 60 later this year. Sigh.

My best friends/neighbors came and we chatted and had my hot punch (non-alcoholic as usual) and talked about our Christmas day and families, etc.

They left around 10 and I kinda watched THE ball come down. I thought it was not a very fabulous looking ball. Dick Clark is showing the effects of his problems; so sad.

That was it.
