What's for Dinner ... Friday?

It is above freezing here in OH but so overcast that the sky almost meets the ground.

I made a hot roast beef sandwich w/gravy, a side of peas, and a side of applesauce for my meal tonight.

So what's on your table tonight.

My meal was mostly leftovers, ham sandwich on a homemade yeast roll, cream corn, spinach, and a very small baked potato. Cloudy all day here today too, with rain to move in. So much snow here yet.

Goodbye lunch with dearest friend and had Chinese!

Had their pepper steak with stir fry peppers, onions, rice, egg drop soup, egg roll.

T'was good. First time to visit this restaurant.

Its confusing because it goes against what has been the accepted common knowledge since perhaps the early 1800's. The farmers growing them and calling them yams, are wrong. The grocers selling them and calling them yams, are wrong. The companies canning them and labeling them as yams, are wrong. The people who first introduced them to the United States called them yams, perhaps to distinguish them from the different variety of sweet potatoes that were already on the market, they were wrong too. Even some sites on the web that try to explain the difference with helpful images like this one: http://www.frugallivingnw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/yams-sweet-potatoes-is-there-a-difference-2.jpg are wrong. (hint they are all sweet potatoes, despite their labels) So it is not at all surprising that what I learned at a young age from my mother and grandmother, and which was continually re-enforced every Thanksgiving or every time I visited a grocery store, is wrong. I have never eaten a true yam in my life, and seeing some of the pictures of what a true yam look like, I probably never will. Does it harm me in any way if other people choose to call some varieties of sweet potatoes "yams", no. It merely bothers the pedantic part of me a little when someone asserts something to be a fact, when they are in fact wrong.

Our landlords must have made a stop in Ohio Shirley! That happens to us regularly! LOL Hubby has the urge for a ham, so we bought one today and will have that with some potatoes and green beans tomorrow. I made a pasta salad and my Asian coleslaw.

Oh dear....not the ideal dinner for us! We had been invited to some close friends' home for dinner over a week ago. I asked if there was anything I could bring and she insisted that everything was covered.....she was making lasagna. She turned down my offer of a salad. I love lasagna, but I have a real problem with wheat pasta. When I make it, it's a veggie layered meal, with ricotta, Italian sausage, gooey and delicious but no wheat noodles. She had yummy appetizers, puff pastry treats mostly, which I adore but can't eat much of. Luckily, there was a veggie platter. Her lasagna smelled and tasted divine, but I knew if I ate more than a bite that I'd suffer all weekend. And NO salad! I guess I'm going to have to declare myself 'wheat free' to my friends. I've never been to a restaurant or dinner where there were zero options and this was a bit of a shock. We stopped at McDonald's on the way home so I could have their Southwestern salad with grilled chicken. Robert stuffed himself with lasagna, lol.

Jasdip, lol....I was absolutely being silly, but it turns out that the history behind the colorful name is murky, at best. All of the many stories go pretty much down the same path...it's fast and easy! We babysat for the two little girls who live next door with their grandfather, our much loved neighbor. He had his first date in the many years since his dear wife died! These little girls have real separation anxiety issues and this was the first time that he had left them at night since he took them into his home. I fixed 'breakast for dinner'; pancakes made to order, ham sausage patties, scrambles eggs, and fresh fruit. I let them pick out their pancake ingredients from little bowls of chocolate chips, chopped apple, blueberries, peanut butter, nuts, apricot preserves, and strawberry jam. Just one pancake each, but they really loved their whole supper.

This has been a crazy week. I had Mexican train Monday night so I just had a quick bowl of soup. Tuesday night was bridge and I forgot about dinner so I just had a cup of tea. Wednesday night was Wine and Dine so we went out for dinner. Thursday night my birthday group celebrated a friends birthday with dinner out and today DH and I went washing machine shopping and we went out for lunch afterwards so I haven't been cooking all week. Tonight I will have the leftover chicken and snow peas that I had for lunch and DH will have his leftover beef and fried rice. Gosh, I just might had to cook tomorrow if I remember how.

Sue: Isn't it great to have leftovers? Yours sound delicious. I wouldn't mind sharing yours.

Glenda: It will be hard not to have your friend near you for half of the year. But it will be all the nicer when it's your turn to have her back again. Can you believe I've only been to a Chinese restaurant once?!

Laura: I'd like to eat w/you tonight so I could try asparagus... as well as enjoy the other foods.

Raven: That sounds like a filling, tasty meal choice, as well as a body warmer-upper.

Georgysmom: How can you forget to eat? lol We need a break from cooking once in a while, don't we?

Hubby and I went out...
He had a Devastator...burger med rare, fried ham slice, fried egg, cheese on a brioche bun with hand cut fries.

We had left overs hubby had chili our roommate and I had leftover sesame chicken and brown rice. Long two days, DH had his fourth eye surgery from his cataract surgery yesterday at six AM, so up at four. Follow up today. Not great news.

did the bank, sam's club and stopped att he chicken place in our burg...we never get chicken, lol...dh gets fish, I got ribs...it will also be our lunch today...

I had a crock pot of French onion soup going. We frequently go on Friday nights to a little local wine shop owned by friends. Last night was sad because it was the final one; the shop is closing. A few months ago the owner's wife was diagnosed with an aggressive form of MS. She's a Type 1 diabetic and was already having health problems from that. She needs a lot of help now and can't be alone, so they're closing the shop so he can be home to help her. We ran into friends there. They were going to try the new Chinese restaurant in town and invited us. So we had sushi and Chinese.
