Blue bag???

See my favorite things thread. Flyingflower got a little blue bag she was carrying around the house for days... I just wanted to know what was in it.

It was Tiffany blue, was it not? :-)

Wait till you hear what happened, you won't believe it. It's a long story so here goes...

On Dec 24 I woke up and the first thing out of my mouth was, "can I open it yet?" NO he said, not till after we come back from the movie. We planned to see Narnia at 1pm which meant I had to wait till late afternoon. I was bored with the movie and was happy when it finally ended. When we got home I said, "NOW can I open it?". He laughed and said alright, go ahead. But when it came time to lift the lid on the black jewelry box inside the blue box I couldn't do it! I froze. DH is staring at me while I sit there afraid to finally have the mystery solved. As I'm about to open it he says, "you've waited a long time, 20 years, I hope this makes up for that". True, he has not bought me a piece of jewelry since our wedding. Now I'm really nervous. I start to lift the lid and then shut it again. He says, WILL YOU OPEN IT ALREADY! Holding my breath I lift it slowly but whatever was inside had fallen back because I had it tipped. I see nothing except what looks like a silver chain. Is that it? Tipping the box forward out it slides... a 3-dimensional sterling silver heart with 5 tiny embedded pink saphires, on a silver chain. It was so beautiful. He actually remembered pink is my favorite color! It's dainty so I can wear it with everything (the chain is 16"). I was very pleased with his choice, he did good!

With a grin on his face he says, "I wanted some part of this gift to be a surprise soooooo....." and from a secret hiding place he pulls out a SECOND TIFFANY BAG!!!!!!!! O>M>G I SCREAM. He caught me so off guard I was speechless. This one I opened quickly. I see 4 marquis diamonds in an X shape with a tiny bead in the center. And its set in PLATINUM! Even the 16" chain is platinum. So gorgeous in its simplicity, I loved it. He said this was the smaller of the two sizes. Naturally I'm anxious to try it on so I remove the heart necklace and put on the diamond necklace.

Our plans for the evening were to drive around looking at Christmas lights. We leave the house (I'm still wearing the diamond necklace) and are gone for 5 hours. We come home at 11pm, exhausted. I get ready for bed and take off the diamond necklace and put it in my jewelry box. I wanted to look at the heart necklace before putting it away. That's when it dawns on me, where did I put it? In all the excitement with the 2nd Tiffany box I lost track of the heart necklace. I casually look for it in the obvious places but it's not there. Hmmm, this is strange. What did I do with it? My mind was a complete blank so I calmly continue looking...surely it's somewhere in plain sight. I look for an hour and then ask DH to help. He turns up nothing. Why aren't we finding it, where the hell is it? I quicken the pace, turning up sofa cushions, dumping out my jewerly box, examining every shread of Christmas wrap, digging through the trash, crawling along the floor (found the dog's missing toy)...still no sign. We're retracing our steps as best we can, mistified why we hadn't found it yet. DH is becoming angry, I'll never buy jewelry again! If you can't take care of it...on and on he rants.. I should never have got the second necklace, you lost interest in it as soon as you saw the diamond! His comments upset me all themore and I go into panic mode turning the house upside down looking. Did the dog find it on the floor and eat it...will I have to dig through his poop in the morning looking for it??? All the joy from the day vanished as I search frantically for this thing. How could I let this happen?! What kind of wretch would cast something so beautiful aside so quickly! Disgusted DH said he was going to bed. It was now 2am. I wasn't going to give up if I had to stay up all night. By 3am I was so tired I felt faint and sick but kept going. And that's when I opened up the tiny end table drawer next to the sofa. A drawer I rarely use or open because it's too small to hold much of anything. There it was, safely in its little blue pouch. Must have placed it in there without thinking to keep it out of harms way. Subconciously protecting it without conciously aware of doing it. I ran down the hall and flipped the light switch on in the bedroom, "I found My Precious!!" It was like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders. Finally I could go to sleep. The Christmas I'll NEVER forget.

p.s. I had to ask DH how much he spent because this was clearly over and above what he normally spends on my gift(we're talking about a man who normally buys me a Jim Shore piece and some candy!). I'll have to transfer money from our retirement account to pay for his little shopping spree but it's OK, they're priceless to me, wouldn't return either of them for anything. I just pray I don't lose them!

Maybe I'm far too sensitive but your DH's anger and harsh words would have tainted the jewelery for me. . .

Kellyeng, I feel as you. I accidentally threw four pieces of jewelry in the garbage (not realizing it until after the garbage was picked up) one piece being a brand new diamond and ruby tennis bracelet given to me by DH and so new it was not insured. DH knew I was upset and he told me it's only jewelry and not to be upset.

Flyingflower, I too hope you don't lose your new jewelry, but just get it insured in case you do.

Golddust, how did your son like his gift?? I thought of him all day yesterday.

Reading your story, I was miffed at your husband for making you wait all day to open your present. And sit through a movie! And then the anger and harsh words. And having to pay for it with your retirement funds. You are handling this better than I would have.

Flying, it sounds like the necklaces are beautiful. I'm sure you'll enjoy them always. How hard it must be to decide which to wear!

I hope everyone had as nice a day as I did. Kids home, all their dogs here, friends dropping in, lots of food...it was awesome.

I think with tiredness and the late hour, this might be why your dh got upset
and said what he said; after all , the necklace couldn't just have vanished , it was certain that it was somewhere. I empathize with how you must have felt.
It must have been awful.

Wow! Sounds like a great Christmas haul! I'm sorry you misplaced your first gift but all is well that ends well. I want pictures too!!

Flyingflower- beautiful! I can understand why your hub got upset; mine would do the same thing. I too have "tainted jewelry".. one year he got me something I hated & we exchanged it; another year he bought me diamond studs which I did not need because I have 2 that needed to be reset from gold to white gold. I've told him for years how I'd like him to reset them for me as a gift.

I'm not sure I would have stayed up all night looking for it. I would have stopped at 1am the latest because I know from experience that you just drive yourself crazy & you're better to start fresh the next day.

Curiosity got me; went to Tiffany & looked them up- not sure if the 2nd one is right; think I saw 3 or 4 versions of it- different weights.

roselvr- you don't have to have your studs reset. You can simply have them electroplated. I gave my daughter an emerald and diamond necklace when she graduated from college. It was a piece I had owned for years and since emerald is her birthstone I thought it would be a treasured keepsake and her graduation was on her birthday.

But like so many in the younger crowd she didn't care for the yellow gold. So I my jeweler send it out for plating. I'm not sure exactly how it's done but it doesn't harm the gemstone and it lasts for many years. You can do it to rings too but since they're subjected to more wear the plating may start to wear off after a few years.

I think we're both in South Jersey and I can even give you the name of my jeweler if you're interested. His shop is in Yardley, PA. I know there are other jewelers who can have this done too.

roselvr, that's the one...Victoria with .36 carats. It is 5/16" in length/height and each diamond is 3/16" long. I wonder where they got the names Etoile and Victoria from. Is an X shape always called Victoria? I thought it was a kiss because of the symbol for hugs and kisses (x and o).

While I didn't like DH's comments I'm not going to hold it against him because I was the one who ruined what should have been a wonderful memory for both of us. I felt terrible that my absentmindedness caused him to regret the whole thing. TG I did find it because the guilt would have been a heavy weight. I'm going to assume he regrets his outburst because he hasn't brought up the "incident", and has even eluded to there being a "next time"! He said he actually enjoyed looking at jewelry (a totally foreign experience for him). I'm taking these comments to mean that there may be more surprises in the future. But I better not lose anything or all bets will be off. This scared the begeebees out of me, from now on I'm going to be extra careful when I remove jewelry. I don't know how women go around wearing jewelry in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, for me the fear of something happening makes it too nerveracking!

marlene you poor girl, how you must have felt when you realized you threw your jewelry away by accident! Back in the 80s I bought myself a pearl bracelet while on vacation in Hawaii. Only a couple weeks later I was wearing a sweater and it got a little too warm so I took it off. Pulling the sleaves off also pulled the bracelet off. By the time I noticed there was no way to backtrack and it was gone forever.

Here's a funny story about losing jewerly. When I was a teenager I lost a gemstone pendant in the house. I had everyone in the family helping me look for it. We gave up after hours of searching and I resigned myself that I would never see it again. Just then my grandfather comes into the room and holds his hand out to me with my pendant in his palm. We all screamed, WHERE DID YOU FIND IT?!! He shyly answered that he noticed something shining up at him while he was about to go to the bathroom. He stopped just short of peeing to look closer at this glittering object in the bottom of the toilet bowl. It was my missing pendant! We had a good laugh over that one.

Whew! I'm glad it's all over in a GOOD way!

I wouldn't have been tooo pleased either if my DW had "lost" something like THAT the same day She got it!! Sadly, I may have been just as "curt" with my words...

But...all's well that ends well!!
This episode may become a great story over the years for you guys!

I DO like the "torture-waiting" your DH made you go thru!! I would've done the same...OR WORSE! I can be quite "evil" when setting-up something like that!
I "sorta" did something like that when we went to Hawaii in June '09, when I switched the one hotel to the 4S. No one knew anything 'till we pulled up!
(I had known for 3 months!!)

FF, your new jewelry is beautiful. I would be looking in the mirror constantly admiring them. Your DH has very good taste and he probably was just terribly disappointed when he thought you had lost one of the pieces. But it was a happy ending....and I do like how he surprised you with the second piece.

Another benefit to this....

Her DH now has a place to hide things where She'll never look.......hee-hee!

I asked him where his hiding place was and he wouldn't tell me. I'm glad I didn't find it by accident because the surprise was definitely fun. But he needs to be clever because I open a lot of drawers while I'm cleaning,etc. He hid candy in his sock drawer, that wasn't too smart since I'm the one who puts clean socks away, I found that stash pretty quick.
So Faron, has this given you ideas for next Christmas? ;-)

My DH is wise to my snooping tendencies. He keeps my gifts at work until 1-2 days before Christmas. I also was the recipient of a lovely little blue box this Christmas!

Flyingflower, thanks for thinking of Derek on Xmas. He won't be here until the 5th, due to his job. His gifts are still wrapped under the tree. We also bought him a nice (Swiss Army) backpack designed to carry his computer and books for school.

My blue box contained a ring... it is one of the "garden" or "garden flower" (?) rings. It's the smaller one, diamonds and platinum. Yes, I am spoiled every Christmas! I love it; it's sort of retro looking. He did this partly because he is planning to buy himself a nice watch and feels guilty about it. ;)

Sueb - I was browsing through Tiffany's in October and that ring caught my eye. Is it the one with the rose cut diamonds? I think that's why I noticed it- it did look retro. I was looking for a tiny open star in diamonds for my daughter but the ones they had were too large. It is a beautiful ring.

The one I have is linked below. I know, it's a very extravagant Christmas gift, but DH's company had a good year, etc etc.

However, full disclosure, I may be exchanging it for the other ring I had been looking at, which was the ring with the rose cut diamonds. There is something about the ring I do have that isn't sitting right -- I can't tell if the ring itself is maybe 1/2 size too small, or if just the style of the ring is not comfortable on my finger. I picked out the ring, so it's not like I'll make DH feel bad about picking the wrong thing! But I may go to the store tomorrow and try on the other one and see if that feels better. Of course, it's also more expensive, ahem. But at this price, I want it to be a ring that I'm going to wear every day and be 100% thrilled about.

That is a very pretty ring, I'm partial to flowers and anything that relates to gardens so this ring is something I would wear a lot...providing it was comfortable. Send us the link to the ring you're thinking of buying in its place!

Is there a Tiffany store in Fargo? Mrs. Faron needs a little blue bag too!

BTW, is there any better diamond lighting than in a Tiffany store? I don't think so. I drop in just to see what my beautiful diamond looks like under their lights.

The ring I'm thinking of getting is below. I did try it on in the store about a month ago, and I can't remember why I decided I liked the other one better. Maybe the cost, or maybe this one wasn't as fabulous IRL as it appears online. I'm going this afternoon... will report back! Part of me is thinking "oh, the things we could do with this money..." but if DH is willing to splurge, I am willing to go along. If I must. ;)

I got the new ring! (The one in the last link.) I tried it on and it was like, ahhhh, this is it. The saleswoman said the other one may have been less comfortable on my finger because it was a more square band. The band on this one is very thin. It is so pretty and unusual. I generally prefer more "artsy" jewelry over the offerings at fine jewelry stores, even Tiffany, but this ring really is unusual. The other nice thing is that it's part of a new collection and they have come out with a matching necklace, earrings... hey, Valentine's Day is coming! LOL. I didn't even look at the price on those but the necklace was stunning.
