Uba Tuba Girl Chooses Backsplash - Love it, now needs paint color

I did it. My backsplash is up and I am very happy with it! It is Dal Tile Glass Reflections, Cream Soda. Home Depot online had the best price for it. The best part is, the installer did a great job and was great to work with. I cannot say that for past projects.

Things to note...I could not decide where to end the backsplash and think I decided on a wise choice. Also my friend painted the switchplate covers and they are a fabulous match...in my opinion anyway.

Now....I am trying to choose a paint color. I really have very few walls...In fac,t the only small wall I have is adjacent to the refridg (which you cannot see in the pic.) The rest of the walls are above the cabinets.

The tile is really not green although it might look like it in the photos. It is gold with a greenish cast. I got a few samples from Sherwin Williams. I do not want the paint to be the same color as the tile. Lighter or a totally different color. As you can see from the photos my kitchen is very open to the other rooms. Looking forward to your expertise. I even thought of wallpaper but not totally sold on that idea. Thank you in advance!

I'd paint the kitchen the same color as the family room.

Wow! That looks great! You did good as they say down here in the Deep South. Your cabinets are beautiful and the granite and backsplash look great with them.

My house is similar in that it is very open. A mixed blessing when it comes to paint. I had wallpaper up in the kitchen when we first moved in and thought it looked weird to have a wallpapered room hanging off the rest of the space. I repainted it several colors trying for the perfect one that would go with cabinets and the rest of the house. You can see everything in my house when you come in the front door, not sure if yours is that way. Eventually I went with a color that is very similar to the colors in the open areas of the house. After all my experimentation it looked the best. I have SW Plantation beige (an old Duron color) in the open spaces and then BM Danville Tan in the kitchen. Danville Tan is a good color to go with what you have but I am afraid that it is similar to your backsplash tile. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. We are getting closer. We took at look at the additional suggestions (SW Blonde, Ivorie and BM Shelburne Buff HC 28) but they didn't make the cut for what we are looking for. The good news is I think we are down to two (or at least that is all my DW wants to deal with at this point): BM Precious Ivory 185 (a little tan and slightly darker) and BM Soleil AF-330 (a little sunny). The Precious Ivory probably does have a better chance of complementing some of the ubatuba highlights, but I like the 'sunny' part of Soleil, especially since we have little direct light into our kitchen. Oh, and there might be some BM Popcorn Kernel 310 in there but I can't tell if the kids like the color or the name.

owa, if you don't like it how it is, change it, for sure! Go on Houzz.com or pinterest, or look at finished kitchens to find kitchen that speak to you. Look for elements you like, like creamy white cabs, brownish granites, etc. Look also for light fixtures, window treatments, and general overall style that speaks to you. Use it for inspiration. I find it's must easier to see things I like than to try to figure out what I like all on my own. Something that many low-budget renovators have done is removed a few doors on cabinets, for open-shelving, or even removed a few upper cabinets, and added open shelves. This could work with a french-country style for sure. I also removed ancient gross grimy hardware from half the cabs, and added new matching hardware to the whole kitchen (half of mine had no hardware at all either.) It was a cheap and easy change with huge dividends in my happiness :) I didn't change anything else yet, not the ripped sheet-vinyl flooring or the laminate counters. And I'm still happier when I walk into my bright and cheery white kitchen! We finished our remodel 3 years ago and I picked oak cabinets (a little lighter than golden oak) and uba tuba. The combination looks very good together. Originally, I wanted maple cabinets and saw that there was more color variation in the staining than desired. Anyway: no regrets about this decision! The walls are painted a goldish tan (somewhat like wheat). Haven't done a backsplash yet. The more I live with the painted walls which I like the slower to get tile. I've been thinking a light green or cream color in a classic style would look good. My goal is a calm, serene look. Sometimes, I get second thoughts and think about a mission or craftsman type design over the stove.

nosoccermom, Yes those tiles were the ones we had actually looked at already. We definitely need a new floor, the old one has been really beaten up and in fact was only glued around the edges, and it's coming up around the wall in some parts, and overall looks dingy. We weren't sure how the color would fit in with the kitchen however. The interior designer recommended something called "grey washed" is what I have written down. I like the appeal of the luxury vinyl, they aren't cold tile, easy to install, and the grout is actually a better version than regular tile group in that it's not porous.

It looks great! I think a medium tan with gold in it would look great. I have SW Macadamia in my living room and it might look nice in there.

Take a look at your spice rack.....it looks like any of those colors would work!

So many options. How about Benjamin Moore Hush. Or something really rich and creamy like a light french vanilla or pale buttercream or go bold and do a deep teal. It's hard to say for sure since the tiles look green on my computer screen and you are saying they are gold with a green tint.

I've got the same spice rack and the same color cabinets as you. It all works together so nicely. As does your backsplash. Very nice!

I painted many foam boards to determine colors and that was just for the outside of the house.
I agree to continue the color from the family room - I think it will work fine or possibly go one shade darker on the same scale - and don't be afraid to experiment - my house looked more like a chemistry lab than a house during paint decisions!
