ikea vs. kraftmaid
Comments (6)We had looked at IKEA but I wasn't thrilled with the door choices. Once I found out about the KraftMaid Outlet we decided we had nothing to lose by checking it out. Yes, it is a bit of a hassle and you may have to make a few trips to complete your kitchen but we found the savings were definitely worth it! We ended up doing our kitchen for signficantly less than what IKEA would have cost plus we have a door style we both liked. Our cabinets came with full extension and soft close drawers, a super susan, pull-out trash/recycle, etc. and they were already assembled. It takes us about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive to the Kraftmaid Outlet....See MoreKraftmaid vs. American Woodmark vs. ???
Comments (8)I'll chime in! We are in the process of installing, right now, Krafmaid cabinets. We have simple shaker style cabinets (Hayward, also called Putnam) in cherry with honey spice stain. This stain really is light and just evens out the tone some. We even (horrors!) got them from Home Depot. So far, they're fantastic. Truly. We had an absolutely amazing and creative KD from Home Depot. We were lucky and were able to use the KD that some friends had used for multiple projects -- after they "interviewed" probably a dozen KDs from different Home Depots, Lowe's and smaller companies in the area. She is really great and was able to know when to incorporate bath cabs in a few limited places so that the sizing would do what we wanted. I think getting a creative and experienced KD is key, and we were VERY lucky to find her. We are still installing, but have unpacked everything. We have one door that needs to be replaced due to a crack in the joint, and one with glass that the glass has a tiny crack. This is no problem and we'll just switch out those doors. All the cabinet boxes have been perfect (square, plumb, in perfect condition). Once you receive the cabs, you have 90 days to let them know of any issues. So far, our KD and Kraftmaid have been wonderful. The cabs are very solid and the finish is great. The wood is fairly consistent and we only have one stile that I would consider to be a lesser cherry than a true mid-level cherry. But it's not all that noticeable and I think is reflective of using real wood. I don't know anything about American Woodmark, but our KD recommended Kraftmaid as she said they're very responsive and easy to work with. So far, she's been right. We did upgrade to all plywood boxes, soft close on all doors and drawers, and a few other bells and whistles. I just wanted to chime in because I know KM gets bashed a bunch, but so far, our experience has been great. And they look great!...See MoreSchuler vs Kraftmaid vs Wellborn Forest vs Koch
Comments (8)The in-laws just had Kraftmaid installed within the last two months and they seem to be happy with them thus far. They were going to have ***** (a major name) reface them and when the sub-contractor came out to measure he told them they could have brand new cabinets for the same price (I'm sure ***** would be less than thrilled with that kind of sales pitch but it was too good to turn down). We visited them in October and I was impressed with the self-closing feature (brand new thing for me - I've really been out of it in terms of what's new in cabinetry). Of course, most (all?) of the companies have self-closing features but I've noticed that, since being back home and visiting cabinet stores, some don't seem to close/function as well as others (which could be a result of being in showrooms (?)). We had custom cabinets in the last house and the quality was terrible so in comparison, the Kraftmaid seemed well-made. I had Amish-made custom cabinets in the house before that and thought the quality of the Kraftmaid was more in keeping with those cabinets (which were built in the pre-self-closing era but were very well made). Unfortunately, Wellborn Forest is not available in California - at least not according to their website, although Wellborn appears to be available. I've always had the impression Wellborn were well-made cabinets but I don't know anyone who has owned either line. I've been somewhat leery about Schuler because they're owned by the same conglomerate that owns Medallion (Elkay) and when I googled Medallion a few weeks ago this is one of the first 10 entries that came up (and from Gardenweb): "My frustration with Medallion Cabinet Co." I haven't ever looked at Koch cabinets because even though their website indicates they're available in California, they don't list dealer names and require a phone call for more information. I'm weird in this way - but a little thing like that aggravates me. I've actually emailed a handful of cabinet companies for more information on dealers and have never heard back from any of them (apparently the economy is better than I thought). I'm curious about Big Blue. Is it a store like Home Depot or Lowe's?...See MoreConestoga vs Barkers vs Kraftmaid
Comments (1)The finished KM will br about double what it is now, with all the needed *properly* finished off sides, and parts and pieces. Unless you’re in the junior line, with lesser specs. Conestoga will br about 70-85% of KM. But if you’re paying labor to assemble instead of DIYing, it will end up being more $$. Forget the other company entirely. It all comes down to your cake baking skill, vs buying one from a bakery already baked and frosted. Time is one aspect. Skill and power tool ownership is a big other variable. Help from an actual kitchen designer vs a cabinet seller pushing things that aren’t right and not needed is another factor....See Moreneedsometips08
