Relative cabinetry prices: brand vs. brand
Comments (203)So the contractor we were working with used only Mid-Continent Cabinets. After working with him since early June to put together a plan, he just told us yesterday he won't be able to start our kitchen until at least January. My husband is a contractor (works in commercial and medical development) questioned the breakdown of $25,000 for pretty standard cabinets which we think bugged the GC. I have $15,000 in Bosch appliances sitting in a warehouse and an engineer's plan for a beam to take out a wall. We are frustrated and disappointed. My husband is now considering coordinating our reno himself. Any suggestions on to pursue cabinet work - we our outside Orlando, FL......See MoreMerillat classic cabinet
Comments (59)@Mavis Jones Our builder contracted with the local Reico office. I'll start out with something I'm sure you will already know, and most likely agree with, that every Reico office is different (staff, experience, expertise). I didn't find our Reico designer to be helpful in choosing options, but I came to the appointment ready to roll (our builder provided all the options prior to the appointment). I came in thinking I would go with Ralston or Tolani until she pulled out a new option the builder added to the list, Glenrock. I went with that and love them (in Kona stain). My husband pulled out all the countertop options and narrowed them down and I made the final decision. The designer was helpful only in ticking off all her boxes for the builder. But that's just me as a customer, other customers she'd provide more guidance. I like the cabinets a lot. I've had better cabinets in a previous home but I like these. I chose a recessed design and the inset sounds like MDF (in my previous house they were all wood, including the inset), but I don't go around tapping on the inset so it doesn't matter to me. It seems like the finish on these is more prone to scratches so someday I'll get around to filling them in with the stain pens they provided. They're easy to clean with water and vinegar. The stain color is consistent throughout the product. These pics were before we moved in so there's some building/construction dust still on them....See MoreKD, Cabinet Makers, Expert Advise, plywood box or not?
Comments (11)Thomasville is now made by MasterBrand (Diamond and\or Kemper). The use of the name Thomasville is a licensing arrangement between Thomasville and Home Depot (as previously stated). Initially in 2000 American Woodmark was making the face frame cabinets and Masco was making the frameless through Mill's Pride but since 2003 it has been a MasterBrand product exclusively with the frameless only available in Canada. I think it is quite possible that Furniture Brands has a role in product approval but I doubt they play much of a role in the quality control of a product being produced in factories owned by another company. The production arrangement is between HD and MasterBrand not MasterBrand and Furniture Brands. We were advised if my Mom had wanted a stained finish she would be better off with the Canadian line that slots in under Thomasville as the finish quality was much more consistent. For paint we were told Thomasville did nicer paint finishes than Kraftmaid. Here is a link that might be useful: HD press release...See MoreRelative cabinetry prices: brand vs. brand: take 2
Comments (23)Mrsjoe, Yes, Conestoga's are far better than Kraftsmaid in quality (although Kraftsmaid is nice). I'm not sure about Shenandoah as I have never seen them. I think quality wise (not price) they fall somewhere between Medallion/Schuler's plywood/wood option and maybe Shiloh or a bit further down the list. My estimate for Medallion in non wood "mdf" boxes came in at $14,000 or just under (forget) and my Conestoga's "all wood" rta's were around $8,000 with shipping. My bill was actually $8,320 I think but I ordered some back-up stain, glaze, paint, varnish and top coat just in case we screwed anything up. The finishes are real nice and I do love the catalyzed varnished interiors and the thick solid wood varnished shelves. I paid and extra $10 for 3/4 inch thick bottoms in my larger drawer bank. It was probably over kill but these babies are solid....See MoreMercymygft
