Worst job ever! (may be too graphic for some)

About 8 years ago when DH lost his job of 14 years he had a hard time gaining employment. He wound up at a meat packing plant that is 1 1/2 hours away. It was long hours but the pay was good, with weekly overtime, and he didn't do much to earn that pay. LOL

His job consisted of standing on line, watching pork roast roll by in a refridgerated room. He wasn't unhappy with the job so I decided maybe it was time for me to get back into the workforce and I also applied for a job a week later and got hired. I was thrilled! Our savings had been depleted.

My first day, they took us for a plant tour, dropping new employees at their new work areas. Imagine my surprise/horror to find myself on THE KILL FLOOR! Yep, kill floor!

I forget what my actual job title was but I filled in where ever I was needed. My first job was simple, just sticking labels on boxes, but I was facing where the hogs first come online. They've been shot, hung by the back legs, then have their throats slit. The blood and the smell...........!!

But, DH had been out of work awhile and we needed money, otherwise I couldn't have made it through the day. From there things just went from bad to worse. DH was given a different responsibility and had to go in 2 hours earlier than I, and I was getting off work 2 hours later. We were having to leave the house at 2:15 AM and not getting home until after 7PM. We were determined to stick it out until the 90 day period passed where I could apply for a job in another area of the plant.

Some of the worst jobs I did were hooking carcasses (big hooks!), splitting skulls and cleaning offal. Splitting skulls was the messiest, disgusting thing I've ever done. Another was running those carcass hooks from one area to another. Running... on blood-slickened floors... slipping and sliding. They had workers that constantly cleaned the floor with hot water hoses, but the blood ran faster than the workers, and the heat was terrible.

Luckily for me I got an infected finger and quit before the 90 day period was up. Imagine that... being happy for getting an infected finger! LOL

DH soon after got a job making about the same pay with a company close to home and I once again became a stay at home mom for a couple years longer.

Funny what we can do when we have to put food on the table!
