Horseraddish!

Well, we've made our third batch. Actually, we made it in April. We've been on the road again for almost a month, and came home today. DH says it's the best batch we've made! It sure makes my nose go crazy, sitting across the table!

So, we were in Colonial Williamsburg, and they had a street fair/herb fair type thing. Horseraddish is the herb of the year! We didn't know that, but we do now. They even had horseraddish plants for sale. So, now we have to find somewhere to plant it! And we will be going to my aunt's to see if we can find it still growing on the creek bank. If we do, we will also have some of what's left that my grandfather used to grow! We will be taking the plant with us to help identify it, so we know we get the right stuff! Poor thing has been riding in the back of the pickup, being towed thru several states!

Tami, My hubby and I grow horseradish. We love it! It can get out of control on you if you don't stay on top of it.

So what did you make out of it? We peel it, grind it with a little vinegar, jar it up and put it in the frig. When ever we want another batch we just dig some more and
repeat.

How do you use it? Did you get any recipes from the street fair?

Karen, I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I'm still recovering from our month on the road!

We do what you do. Since I am allergic to garlic, this is my DH's substitute. He is Polish on his mother's side, grandparents came from Poland, so he grew up on it. He'll put it on or in a lot of what he eats. We've even had it in mashed potatoes. I don't like it, so I don't eat it. DS started putting it in deviled eggs. I also make DH's salad dressing. It's a honey mustard that I got somewhere on line, and I add horseraddish to that.

Honey Mustard Salad Dressing

1/4 c cider vinegar
1/2 c oil
1 1/2 T. mustard
1 1/2 T. honey
1 t. oregano
1 T. Parmesan cheese

I add about 1 heaping teasp. horseraddish to it.

No horseraddish recipes from the street fair tho. Sorry.

We went to see my Aunt on Sunday. There wasn't any of Grandpa's old plants to be found. It would have been nice to have, but that's the way it goes.

I planted horseradish iin the garden one year and dug it up in the fall And the roots were thin and long. Good flavor. Some of the roots snapped off way way down deep deep. The next year it came back up 6 or 7 feet from where I planted it. I dug it up. And it snapped off way way down deep deep. Had good flavor. Long thin root. The next year it came back up to 20 feet away from where it was planted. It is going to take a backhoe to dig deep enough to get all the root. If one little piece gets left in the ground, it will be back next year. Good luck.

Another that will spread wildly in dry shade is euphorbia -- robbii or chameleon are both good. They have neat succulent foliage, a bit less than a foot tall, with a cluster of chartreuse green (robbii) or maroon (chameleon) brachts above most of the summer. One plant will make a three foot circle in a summer. I am currently digging a bunch of e. robbii out of my iris beds, so let me know if you want it and I'll send you as much as you'd like -- I love it under my pinetrees up the slope. LynnT

Usually most seeds sprout fast for me-10-14 days give or take.With bottom heat... They (C. Chinense) seem to like sprouting better in damp soil rather than the paper towel in a zip lock method. I fill a peat pot with potting soil and put a clear plastic cup upside down over the area where the seed is.Put the whole thing on my grow lights for heat. Then I put the peat pot in a 3 gal. or larger pot once roots go through the pot. I punch holes in the pea pot before I plant it in it's permanent home. The peat pots at the $99. store are really cheep(thin) looking and break down lots quicker than the name brand ones. I like that-faster root growth into the big pot. You get 24 for a buck and tax. They seem to work for me all right so far. The Yellow Manzanos have started to open their buds today.Whooo Hooo! Tree Hab is growing pods and buds too. Baccatums are getting covered with pods...

I'll never forget my introduction to fresh horseradish.... the Lancaster Farmer's Market, 1970 something, aisle after aisle of beautifully ripe, washed vegetables, jar after jar of jewel-like pickles, beets, peaches and other canned goodies, rack after rack of shoo-fly pies, doughnuts, cookies, breads, and other baked goods....OMG what is that? A big bowl piled high with freshly grated horseradish and a large fan behind it aimed right at the passerby....me! It got your attention that's for sure! LOL! Teresa

I love horseradish and put it in potato salad and coleslaw.

Believe it or not, it's one of the few things I have been unable to grow. I've planted three or four times, and each time it just dies. Everyone else tells me it's invasive and grows like a weed, and that they can't get rid of it, but I can sure kill it off...

Annie, where are you planting it? Grandpa's liked the side of the creek bank. Wet and shaley ground. I have no clue where DH planted ours or if it will grow, but he can grow most anything he tries.
