I wouldn't risk using a 25-year old coil. Not only is it likely soon to leak at that age, but also I would not mismatch a new unit on an old coil for fear of performance and reliability issues (unless Unico systems are different from every other system out there). My advice is to install a new R-410a coil and outdoor unit, heat pump or air conditioner, depends on if the electric is cheaper to use for heat. Just my opinion.

I watched your video on Montreal. Very informative. This year I had to raise my retail cost to my customers for the first time in 5 years : R22 from 110 up to 150. 410a and blends : from 55 up to 75/ lb. I was lucky to get 25lb jugs of 410a at 89 out the door by emptying my checking account on Dec.23,2020. Thank you HU-741671485, When I make videos of this nature I spend alot of time researching the subject. Those from a far will chastise political bend, but these political figures are the whole reason behind the changes. So trying to make something without political bend is easy for those who wish to keep their heads buried in the sand. Some of these places have Trigger laws that will simply follow California's lead if they don't come up with a back bone of their own. If you're a jellyfish I guess you got bigger fish to worry about than a spine. If what they were proposing was actually fixing it I may have a different opinion but I often take the side of the under dog for various reasons... or the opposing view to provide clarity. You don't get clarity by just choosing to not talk about politics because it's about politics. At the end of the day you choose what you can choose. One day soon --- many of those choices a home owner has now is likely going away. Unless a company sells alot of refrigerant gas it doesn't really pay to stock up on it. If you're not fixing refrigerant leaks that stops you from selling the refrigerant that you just stocked up on so this method is becoming obsolete. The days of gas n go to the extent I believe you may be apart of is going away. The other side of this for you is that when you're forced to raise prices even minorly the likely whole reason your customers use you is that they can't find cheaper solution elsewhere. It's a double edge sword. I know the home warranty companies often find themselves in these kinds of situations due to what the home warranty company will pay for. ( I don't do home warranties for that reason there's other reasons too, but this is a big one.) If you're a big HVAC company with 30 techs or more with 30 trucks or more on the road? That may be close to a pallet of refrigerant right there with a drum on each truck. So ordering by the pallet for some is a more logical way to buy it than for some 1 man operation like myself. It doesn't pay me to buy it like that. I haven't gotten into buying all these wild hair varieties as you put it. Because I knew a day was coming in which their day in the sun would end. I still to this day find R22 machines and most of the time it's a replace to R410a as currently that is the best choice moving forward. In a few years R410a (it's 2022 now) choices will become more clouded. Buying refrigerant by the pallet may become more of a challenge if the recycleable drum becomes law. These things are being floated right now to do away with single use / non-refill refrigerant drums. They want to be able to track all the drums rumbling around in the back of your service truck / van. Enter even more higher prices, because then you have to take the drums back (probably evactuated if I had to guess) to exchange for a new refrigerant drum. If / when this takes effect --- well I doubt there will be any who say it was a good idea. Stay tuned... the video segments are only getting started. It seems that almost all of the replacement units i've changed out this year have been the Dry units. People in my area of the country are pretty strapped for cash and a dry unit is a perfect solution to get them up and cooling. They don't come with a good warranty (5 years), compaired to the 410A York equipment i install (10 years inside & out) but like i said, it gets them going. The 410A equipment we install seems to actually be cooling better than than the 22 systems. I think alot of it has to do with the X13 or the vari-spd blowers that are usually matched with them. Also, we've been taking more time in our ductwork assembly, making sure that we have no air leakage. I think overall, people are more aware of what it cost to operate their a/c and if they can afford a full upgrade, it would be to their advantage.

All very interestng arguments; however, I am convinced that all the CFC hype is just so much mfr BS just to get new patent royalties and to charge more for equipment. EPA and other gov't agencies don't care a hoot about atmospheric CFC's. My brother lives in a large Virginia city. Their City refuse collection department requires junk refrigerators to be placed by the curb by a specific early morning hour and the disposer must call a number before a specific time to report a refrigerator on the curb for pick up. He told me - and I believe him- that he placed an old refrigerator which was still fully charged with F12 by the curb, called per the City's rules. Soon afterwards, a city vehicle pulled up outside, a man went to the refrigerator for three or four minutes and left. He walked out to see what the man did. He found that the city employee had cut the refrigerant line and dumped all the F12 and had placed a sticker on the refrigerator that read "No Freon". Later that day, a truck arrived, loaded the refrigerator and hauled it away. I have access to a municipal refuse disposal site. County trucks pick up refrigerators from various county public refuse collection sites and haul them to the county refuse disposal site. They are picked up with a machine that regularly damages the refrigerant systems. The refrigerators are off-loaded at the county disposal site by dumping them off the truck. Heavy equipment is used to push the refrigerators - along with the washing machines, driers, bicycles, etc. - into a pile about thirty feet high. Periodically, a large truck comes and hauls all the crushed junk to some recycle center elsewhere. NONE of the refrigerant is evacuated for recyle. I filed a report, nothing ever became of it!! Likewise, junk automobiles go to the junk yards, I don't regularly go to pull my own used auto parts but when I do, I see evidence that no CFC is evacuated for recycle. It is not economically feasible to recycle CFC's; HOWEVER, if CFC spillage were such a problem, there would be better controls. It's all hype to protect new patents and royalties and to justify mfrs' gouging the public for more profit on replacement equipment. If they can make repairing a system expensive enough - like extreme prices to recharge a system - people will buy new equipment; and they do! When our grand leaders in DC start sending inspectors out to find and penalize people who dump CFCs then you guys can continue your argument!! Otherwise, its all irrelevant!!!
