faucet to center of drain math

I have been reading up on GW about sink splashes especially if the sink is shallow.

We have ordered an 8" deep Julien sink (28x16x8 interior dimension) with a rear center drain 6" from back of sink. It will be undermount. DH is 6'4" tall and we opted for the shallower sink so he doesn't need to bend much doing dishes.

For faucet, we are considering both Grohe Concetto and Hansgrohe Talis S. (I like Concetto for its clean lines and DH like Talis S for the magnetic lock for the sprayer.)

Concetto has a spout projection of 8-9/16. Talis-S has a projection of 8-3/4"

To avoid splashing, I thought to carefully plan the faucet and center of drain alignment.

For concetto, I figure if we put the faucet about 2.5" from the back of sink, the water will be spouted into the drain rather than the bottom of sink.

Here's my sink math: 8-9/16" projection minus 2.5" from back of sink = 6-1/16" (which means that the water will flow from spout into the center of drain, yay!) Sounds like that could work, right? What do you think?

For Talis S, it is a bit tricky as the water looks like it will be spouted a bit to the front rather than straight down. I wonder if we need to place the faucet 3" or even 3-1/4" behind the sink, instead of 2-3/4", if we go with Talis S so that the water can hit the center of the drain rather than bottom of sink.

I would love to hear from you for insights as well checking my assumptions in this sink math. Thanks in advance!

Diagrams on the link should help. With your calculations.

One thought about the sink as a former Julien owner. You may want to add a grid which I found to be a terrific feature. That raises the bottom of the sink by an inch or so. I would find the 8" sink too shallow with that, especially when washing.

A poster here several years ago had a dh who was very tall. They put in a 39" high sink counter for his use. Much more comfortable for him

I have two Hansgrohe Talis S high arc faucets. This pic of the one at my prep sink shows how the spout projects forward into the sink. (The lever looks a bit wonky only because the Tapmaster is engaged.)

Both my sinks are silgranit. I paid zero attention in advance about drain placement. I knew that splashing was more a function of a shallow sink. My sinks are deep. A little too deep, really. But better than too shallow, and you don't get a depth choice with Blanco. The ony splashing issue I have is when I hold something flat too high up into the water stream when the faucet is on full blast. User error.

The only plan for faucet placement front to back was to get my faucet as far forward as possible. I asked for as little front counter lip showing as possible and for the faucet to be as close to the back sink edge as possible. As you can see, I also had the control lever placed in the front of the faucet, as opposed to the right side as would be normal. It makes the reach even less for me, the 5'8" chief cook and bottle washer for my family, so more comfortable. The cleanup sink faucet went in first because I didn't have my walnut island counter when we moved in. My plumber couldn't install the faucet with lever to the side with the clearance to the wall, so it had to go forward. I liked it so much that I had him do my prep sink faucet the same way. No standing water all over the counter behind the sink from wet hands this way.

I didn't really consider the drain issue with our bathroom we just did. We went with a square undermount sink with center drain and overflow in the front. But, I do have to tell you that because of the distance front the drain to where our faucet is installed in the concrete countertop, that because there's too much distance, the drain will hardly come up at all (it's not a "pop-up" drain). So, we either have to be creative and try to make something so the drain pull that is hidden behind the faucet will work to pull-up the drain, or purchase a pop-up drain and install it. colorlady's right - depends on where your drain is. My faucet is not centered on the drain, and I find that a minor annoyance. Just something I didn't think of beforehand.

We have a center drain with an 18" trash and recycling setup underneath it. Initially thought we would need a side rear drain, but it worked! What makes it feasible is the lack of a disposal, so if you don't plan to have one, you might be able to pull it off. It really depends on whether you can fit all of the rest of your under-sink gear on one side of the sink (minus a bit in the middle for plumbing). We don't have any of those, so not sure how much space they take. If you're doing two half-depth bins side by side (on both sides of the sink) it might also be different--ours are two front-to-back so they take up 100% of the space on one side but nothing on the other.

I think the center drain siligranite sink is undermount only whereas the offset drain one can be either undermount or drop-in. If you're planning to do undermount then it's really just personal preference. I have mine offset (and undermounted) and like it that way. I can load up dishes on one side and still access my drain and disposal. Without a disposal it probably makes even less of a difference.

You might have more splash if you try to center the faucet over the drain -especially if you have a disposer with flaps - the water splooshes when it hits irregular surfaces - so not much splash on the sink bottom...

rococogurl - we did get the grid for the sink (thanks to your kind recommendation offlist.) I am hoping that it will work anyway for us even though our sink is only 8" deep. I actually read the article "making sense of your kitchen faucet" last night and that led me to investigate the splashing issue on gardenweb. My sink math actually was inspired by the article.

breezygirl - always love your wood countertop! Thanks for showing me your faucet handle position. I really like the idea of no standing water all over the counter turning faucet on and off with wet hands!

a2gemini - wow, I didn't know that the water splooshes when hitting irregular surfaces. We will have a garbage disposal with flaps. Hm...

So, does this mean there was no need to do any sink math to avoid splashing?

It seems like we should have bought the deeper sink but we didn't think about the splashing issue when we went to the showroom to look at sink. DH loves the 8" deep sink, so hopefully it will all work out with the faucet.

I still would love to hear any other comments or input about splashing and faucet placement.
