Adding a volume control to an end-of-cycle buzzer?

I'm working on a recent low-end Whirlpool dryer with an automatic, always-on end-of-cycle buzzer that could wake the neighbors. I want to open up the machine and either (a) remove or disable the buzzer, (b) add an on/off toggle somewhere on the control panel, or (c) add in a volume-control rheostat so it can still alert you when it's done without being so obnoxiously loud. The first two options are straightforward enough, but the third is preferable. I'm wondering what type of part I'd need for the volume control? A potentiometer of some sort from Radio Shack, and what kind? Or maybe just add a cheap resistor or something along a wire to soften the buzzer, which would save the trouble of drilling a hole and adding a knob to the control panel?
