I have yet to break a bone, knock on wood!

Sometimes a hip will break spontaneously and that may have caused the fall, the break happening first. Sounds like what may have happened with her, good thing she was in the Dr's office when it happened.

No broken bones here....although I have taken some tough falls.

Bone #1: Left ankle ... broke it walking across a school yard. Caught a divot in the grass just right and snap. Required wires and pins to repair and 8 weeks (should have been 10) in a cast up to my knee. It happened 7 weeks before a paid for month in Japan with my then 12 year old son. I didn't want to disappoint him so I went to Japan in a cast. I do not recommend that, ever. Long story, short ... I took my cast off two days into the trip and walked with a cane and wrapped ankle the entire month.

Bone #2: Right foot ... broke this on the crutches I used for my broken ankle. In a boot for 6 weeks. I was a sorry sight. LOL

Bone #3: Left foot ... two years after other breaks, wearing the same soft soled shoes I had on when I broke my ankle, I bent my foot over a step just right and ended up with what is called a Jones' fracture. It's where the tendon on the outside of your foot pulls apart the bone at the bottom of your small toe. Another cast up to my knee for 8 weeks. Tossed out the shoes.

Didn't break a single bone until I was 48 years old, then three breaks in two years. I'm 56 now and so far, so good.

Have noticed over the past couple years, she's leaning more from her shoulders.

We're not that close. Just pool buds!

I agree with Donna.Happened to my friend several years ago.She was at the airport waiting for her sister flight to come in.She stood up,her hip broke and down she went.She had surgery and was in rehab for a couple weeks.She is one of those small women,weighs barely 110 soaking wet,plus she had polio as a child.Don't know if that had anything to do with it though.

Had a broken hip as a teen. Until you finish your growth spurt the ball joints are hollow and fill in after growth. When you start growing fast it's common for the bones to break. Mine did. Was coming down a flight of steps when it gave out.

Then about 6 years back I did a thrill of victory, agony of defeat flop down a hill in the wintertime. After a week I went into the hospital and got checked out. Broken shoulder in a couple places, broken arm, couple cracked ribs, 2nd degree frostbite... then figured out a few weeks later that the other shoulder was broken too, but wasn't about to have that arm immobilized too! I needed one arm to get about! And to shift the manual transmission on my truck! So I was just very careful with it.

Thought I broke my foot about a year or so ago, but just banged it up and did some ligament damage so not a real big deal.

How about in a hospital?

Late DH twice had his arm broken by nurses in a hospital.

First nurse dropped him on the floor.

Second nurse (a large heavy woman), a year later and different hospital, fell on top of him when she was transferring him from a chair to his bed.

Holy cow, Monica--that's just terrible.

No broken bones here yet, either. TYG!

Broke a bone in my left foot about 20 years ago. Stepped on a stone and rolled my foot all they did was wrap it in a ace bandage didn't even put me on crutches. My lower left arm is still in a cast from were I fell on Nov. 30th and broke my wrist. Should get the cast off on the 18th of this month.

I broke my tailbone when I was 30...I popped a balloon on a concrete floor, ouch!

I have a friend who lifted her turkey out of the oven and snapped a vertebra. I've only had one broken toe, othervthan that no broken bones.

Okay Glenda, you will get the truth from me on how I broke my ankle. At age 42 I decided that it would be great exercise if I learned to skate. Wow, that was a good idea for about 15 minutes. I fell, looked down and when they got the skate off, could see the bone pushing out on the skin. Had surgery and have a metal plate and screws. Kept meaning to get the metal work taken out in later years. Just never got around to getting the metal out, so now 30 years later I still have reminder with the metal plate in my ankle. I fell five years ago in the snow and ice and broke several bones in my face. Have always taken very good care of my skin and I could not believe what I had done. The full impact was on my face and I fell on concrete. In the end, after I turned black, blue, green, and the swelling went away, everything was fine. It sure did hurt my feeling when I would look in the mirror when this happened.

I've also heard that often brittle bones break prior to the fall.

So far - no breaks.

Cracked a bone in foot once - in Korea a young High School kid used to come study in my (reasonably warm - and well lighted) office, I was upright, reading mag on bed, legs folded under me, when he knocked on house door. Foot bent backwards (had been asleep: it had been on a bed, after all!) when I got off bed to answer door.

Maybe I should knock on wood - (think head'll do?).

Femur!!!--- biggest bone in the body.

I hope your friend recovers well. It's not a good thing to do, so everyone here, watch your step please.

Other than a broken toe years ago and a cracked elbow as a child, I haven't broken any other bones. I am very lucky considering all the falls I have taken.

Wow-there have been some unusual happenings to KT members. I never knew bones could suddenly break. I am not good about getting enough calcium. Maybe that should be my New Years Resolution. Hallngraden-were you rollerblading or ice skating? I'd really like to try rollerblading but I know I shouldn't with my torn ACL. Cynic you deserve an award for the the most mishaps at once!

The only broken bone in this house happened to DS in the birth canal... left arm broken between shoulder and elbow during delivery. It was a rough delivery for both of us, but much worse on him. Luckily he healed quickly.

I hope I didn't just jinx us! Kids just seem to bounce back from these things so fast, while the same injury can leave an adult never the same the again.

Lisa, I was on roller skates. We would take the kids every Tues. night and I really wanted to learn.

When i was in grade school neighbor boy threw a horseshoe at me and broke my arm.
Few years ago DH was stepping from the back of his truck and crushed and dislocated his foot. Two surgeries and three months of therapy.

I broke my nose during a basketball game when I was in HS. I was sitting in the bleachers at the time. Didn't realize it was broken and didn't get it fixed.

In the early 90s I fell and cracked my kneecap.

I broke my left wrist about 37 years ago roller skating. Our family, DH, 3 kids and myself skated 2-3 times a week at our local rink.

Had to have surgery on it to put it back together, the doctor said that he didn't know if I would have very good movement or not after that, but no problem, just looks very slightly out of kilter, but if you didn't know what happened you wouldn't know it. Was in cast for 6 weeks and had physical therapy for another 6 weeks.

Have broken a couple toes over the past couple of years.

Backpacking on the Wonderland Trail Mt Rainier, I broke my ankle! Taped it and whimpered until we finally hiked out ( no other option)
Then in our yard playing with the dog, she bumped into me and knocked me down. I broke my leg in 2 places and paramedics accidentally broke my ankle! Big surgery for that one! Needless to say I refused to pay the bill for the paramedics! I have a plate and pins in the leg and screws in the ankle.
It was going well until our last campout at Boulder River wilderness with I did a flip over a boulder and dislocated my knee and tore the meniscus and ligaments. All night drive down the mountain and surgery as soon as they could get me in.
I have decided to NOT go backpacking anymore.

Don't ask....1967 Auto Accident 29 Fractures for me.

Other than that I must have had a stress fracture on my left foot and it just broke one day about 6 years ago while standing. Next day it was throbbing.

Broke my big toe, after having my home redecorated, and had to drive to Ft Sill for my DS's whatever for the Army

I was thinking as I was reading this that I had never had a broken bone, then when a broken toe was mentioned I remembered I did break the "little piggy" on my right foot. I had just had a Keller bunionectomy on my right big toe and was wearing the "designer boot." I had taken it off and later walked into the bathroom and I mis-stepped and stubbed the little toe. Doc said it was best to just leave it alone. That was years ago; still have pain there sometimes. Other than that, no broken bones.

In this thread, though it seems broken toes are mentioned more than any others.

Got my bone scan report from my doctor a couple weeks ago and she had handwritten on it: "Your bones are very impressive!" Made chucking down all those calcium horse pills worth it!

One morning, I was running late for work, and I was putting my right arm in my shirt sleeve while going down the hallway. I lived in a mobile home and the back door was right by my bedroom. I smacked my hand into the frame. Thinking I just cracked my knuckles I continued on to work. It was factory work and as I was holding parts in that hand the pain became worse and worse. Went to hospital and discovered I had broken a bone in my hand.

Years later I stubbed my little toe and broke it.

Then in Dec, my infamous backwards fall from basement steps, shattering the tibia and fibula bones going into my ankle.

I fell down the stairs and broke my arm when I was a kid...I never did like school, so I managed to get out of it that day...LOL
And in my forties, I fell down steps. was in a hurry.....I thought I had just hurt my back...so I very carefully got up, laid on the couch...it ended up I laid on the couch for 9 days....only got up when I had to go to the bathroom....finally my kids made me go to the dr...I actually broke my back...
I have an aversion to steps now..LOL

No broken bones ever confirmed. Possible mild fractures (wrists/toes) that I just wrapped and left alone. Without an x ray who knows.

I not particularly athletic but I have have a lot of history on skates, both roller and ice. Skating requires you to know your "center". I believe it's what has helped me retain my stability in these more senior years LOL Even with the vertigo (hearing related) that i have to contend with I am pretty darn steady on my feet. I do have to compensate a bit now. I also have a low center of gravity. LOL

DH falls everywhere. Always has. He has no ability to react quickly and catch himself. Once he loses his balance or stumbles it's over. He's going down.

My best friend is the same way. She once broke her elbow by falling backwards while walking forward on a clear day on the sidewalk.

It took me 59 years to have my first diagnosed broken bone. Know my X-rays show a broken toe or two in the past, but I just taped those, and coped.

So last summer, I was loading the car to come home from the country house. Walked down the back deck steps, stepped on an uneven section of sidewalk, 'fell off' my ankle, and saw stars. Figured it was just twisted. It hurt, but hey, these things do. Had a coupon for $15 off at a restaurant where $15 buys dinner for 2, that was expiring that night--we went out to dinner! DH suggested staying home, but I really didn't want to waste that coupon so I hobbled in to the restaurant--LOL! by the next evening, when DH came home, I suggested maybe we should head to the ER. Yep--broke my ankle in 2 places. I was a little surprised, as much as it hurt, I always thought a broken bone would hurt more. But then, it's still achey now in cold/damp weather, so maybe it's all cummulative.
