Questions about outside line drying your laundry

Since it's getting warmer, I'd love to be able to hang my laundry outside instead of using the dryer. I have done this in the past but got discouraged because everything would be so stiff and rough (no matter what I did) so I just started using my dryer again. I would pin them up on the line, part sun -- part shade; some days it would be breezy, others no wind at all. I would hang them out early morning before the extreme heat of the day and before the humidity kicked in. I did use liquid fabric softener in my final rinse hoping that would help with the firmness. Can anyone clue me in as to what I'm doing wrong? I can remember my mom always drying hers outside and have asked her, and I do what she said, but I don't know if the environment has changed or what, but it is definately nothing like how hers was. Help, please!
