Advice: Trane XL15i vs XL16i

Would greatly appreciate some advice. I live in a ranch style 2,500 sqft house currently split 2.5 ton and 3.0 ton 10 Seer Goodman condensor and some mismatched system in attic.

The main unit (3.0 ton) was no longer keeping up in the middle of the afternoon it would slip to 82 degrees and humidity was always an issue. Home warranty company was a battle, they added freon (last year and this year) which helped some, then claimed 'sludge build up and less than 10 degree temp difference between return - system needed replacement. They then sent someone for 2nd opinion and agreed to replace the compressor outside and told me I must pay to clean dirty evaporator coil (1995 coil!) for $500+. Home warranty company refused to replace whole system or consider leak in coil. Long story short we decided that it would be better for us to invest in a new system and take a measly $525 buyout from the home warranty company than put $500+ (or $1400+ for new coil) into old system.

The current vendor we are considering is a Trane Premier dealer that I have known of for a long time. The sales guy was cocky and when I asked about doing the measurement before giving me the price quote (he said it was a sales gimic if there was not any major construction in the house it will come out the same). He said they are required to do the manual j before placing order with Trane and will do so in the end.

Since we are living OK with the 2.0 unit in the bedroom and he offered no discount for replacing both at the same time, we decided we would do the main 3.0 ton system now and deal with the other unit at a later date. Here is what the options are

XL15i

3.0 Ton System Seer 16.0 EER 13.0 ARI# 3328133

Condensor 4TTX5036A1000A

Furnace TUD100R9V5 (2 stage - from what sales guy said this helps a lot with humidity here in TX - is this true, it is $1,000 more)

Coil/Evaporator: ADP TE47636D210B22

Price: $7,799.00

XL16i

4TTX6036C1000A

TUD0809V4K

TE47636D175B22

$8,399

The 16i is $600 more, though from what I gather in this forum the 15i is preferred. The sales guy indicated a $400 discount expires 8/31/09 but he also mentioned Trane may be discounting the same model 9/1/09 so the price is almost the same as the 15 seer. When I asked him what the best value was, he said the 15 seer is what he generally recommends.

Qns:

15 vs 16?

coil?

is 2 stage furnace worthwhile for humidity?

what specific model Honeywell (or trane) thermostat do I want to insist on?

if we wait a few more months will we see prices drop in the winter, we can live with this unit for a while longer...

what else should I ask this vendor to specify

Is Honeywell F-100 a good air cleaner?

Thanks so much for your suggestions
