Suggested Baseboards for Oil Hot Water Heat

We are adding a room and installing additional baseboard in another. We need to choose the baseboard for an oil-fired furnace. Are there any recommendations as to which to choose and which to avoid? We live in New England. Thanks, Deb

The baseboard doesn't care what type of boiler (not furnace, that's warm air) you have. If you know what make you already have stay with that. If you are adding to an existing piece and can't find the same make, you might want to replace the entire section so it matches since every mfr has a different design.

The trend now days is towards infloor heat. Infloor heating systems operate at 120 degrees as opposed to 180 degrees for Radiant baseboard heat. Because infloor systems work at 120 degrees, you can use a condensing boiler which has efficiencies which compare to forced air systems. Some claims are up to 98% efficient, but 94% is typical. Your highest efficiencies come when you can condense the combustion gases which is impossible with a system that operates at 180 degrees. Uponor (Formerly Wirsbo) was the innovator from Sweden. When you are near a cold surface such as a wall, you will feel colder than the room temperature. When you have a warm floor, you will feel warmer than the room temperature. The 2nd time the health department finaly figured it out. What happen is hes an old guy living alone and wants to save money. He turns the tank off when he doesn't shower then turns it up just enough to take a warm shower. Then off it goes." Wow...this was not an issue for me. Our apartment in Singapore used a small 15 litre electric HW tank on a timer switch. This is a relatively common arrangement in the Lion City. Just push a button 20 minutes before needing hot water, and I was good-to-go. The timer ran only for an hour at a time. I'd have to push the button again if I wanted more. In a tropical climate, that was rarely necessary. We would sometimes go a couple of days between heating the tank. Other times, I'd forget to hit the timer until it was too late. It was warm water for my shower or the dishes at this point. I'd shut it off right after I was done, as there was no need for the heater to finish it's cycle. The hot (or sometimes warm) water fed the the shower, kitchen sink, and bathroom sink. I showered, washed dishes, and drank without ever getting sick from it. As-far-as-I-know, no-one has gotten Legionnaire's Disease from using luke-warm water in Singapore. I just wish more Asian countries would use S-traps for sinks and showers. P-traps are common in Singapore. No traps are common in Indonesia. Yuck. I guess that's a discussion for another thread. Peace. Marco

If you turn the zone off it might result in frozen pipes. NOT a good situation. My suggestion is NOT to drain the upstairs loop. You should always maintain some level of heat in the house, even if it's very low. Simply crank your thermostat all the way back. My Mom's house has three zones, the kitchen and two vertical zones, left over from the days when it was coal-fired gravity. Fortunately the house, a large Victorian, is easily broken up. So, last year, we hung large victorian style curtains between the living room and the front of the house and pretty much shut that zone off. I also made indoor window covers for quite a few of the windows, which dramatically reduced the amount of air infiltration. I also got her to FINALLY stop piling all sorts of crap on the radiators, which dramatically reduces their ability to heat. With all that, her oil usage was down quite a bit. One other thing I want to do this year is install a set back thermostat on the main living area.

If you can lower the water temp and still have enough heat that will help, and better yet, install an outdoor reset so it is automatic. Also with continued air problems and excessive noise once all binding areas and metal to metal contact on the glides have been addressed, most likely you are over-pumping your system with too large of a circulator. too big of a pump is a common cause of the rapid expansion producing the additional noise beyond normal. 1-3 GPM per loop is plenty for most BB systems. Smaller pump(s), lower speed(s), circuit setters or balancing valves to slow down flow should do the trick.

Thanks for the correction dapoppa. Boiler it is.

The original manufacturer is no longer in business so we can not match exactly. I was hoping for an approximate match but a friend said she thought there were now such things as high efficiency baseboards. Just didn't know where to start but when I googled I came up with a homeowner very unhappy with his baseboard (Heatrim) so I was hoping for suggestions for good baseboards.

fsq4cw: Jaga is very stylish. I bet it is very expensive.

We are a bit more commonplace. A tiny Cape Half House with ancient pine cabinetry and laminate counter tops.

Slant Fin is probably going to be the easiest to locate, even Home Depot has it. As far as efficiency, they're all about the same unless you get radiant baseboard. Check with a plumbing & heating wholesaler for more info. Standard baseboard is available in a variety of outputs. Sometimes you'll have insufficient wall space for standard output baseboard so high output will give about 150 btu's/ft more to make up for the shortness. I used to install it in bathrooms and other similar areas where most of the wall is already taken by tubs, toilets, cabinets, etc.

Prices will vary according to output but get what you need.
