GE DCVH480EKWW 24" Dryer

I recently bought the GE 24" Washer and Dryer. I live in a condo and can only fit 24" wide washer/dryer and previously had the one-piece stack units from Sears. Decided to buy the front loaders. I did notice when drying clothes, it seems to take longer to dry than with my older non-front load set. I had underwear and socks and used the "cotton" (sensor dry) setting and it initially started out with either 55 minutes or 110 minutes. Then as time went on, it added more time, which I guess is from the sensor dry feature. So today when drying only 4 bath towels, I used the "timed" setting with 60 minutes. The towels were still damp, so I added another 20 minutes and still a tiny bit damp. Does anyone who has this GE Dryer have any suggestions or tips on what settings/time to use for certain types of loads such as Bath Towels, or Jeans, or undergarments, etc? I dont like the fact that it may take 2 hours or so just to dry one load of clothes, and not even a full/large load either. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Are you using the highest available spin speed on the washer, and how wet are the clothes when they come out of the washer?

One of the major advantages of the FL'ing washers is the higher spin speeds. The clothes should come out damp, not wet. If you're sure you're not overloading the dryer (and they need a lot of room to tumble correctly) either the washer isn't extracting enough water, or your dryer isn't getting hot enough or you don't have enough air moving through the dryer. The final problem can be caused by a vent that's blocked up with lint or other obstruction. I found my dryer vent blocked by a birds nest once. The vent would be the first thing I'd check.

I just reread your post. 4 full sized, heavy bath towels may be too much for a 24" dryer. A good rule of thumb is that you don't want to fill a dryer drum more than about half way to allow room for tumbling and air flow in and out of the drum.

Anette, We've had the Bosch AXXIS staking units for several months. The're very, very good. No problems, they just get the job done. We also have a shallow depth so we really had no choice, but no regrets. I would think that Bosch makes a better product than GE.

Wow! That laundry room on page 19 I would love that! It is too bad they didn't mention the GE brand as it has a vented dryer and because if you look at its ratings on Home Depot and Lowes you'll find that it is very well rated and it's about the same price as the Electrolux both of which are much less then the Bosch, Asko, Miele group. (Can you tell I like my GE vented dryer (the vent is about 1 foot long)?) I cannot guess at the insides of the Miele dryer but to me the main issue with the new fire code is that you use ducting that is also fire resistant, no more plastic ducting. You still have to keep the entire run clear and if the run is too long you really should be looking at a condenser type dryer instead of a vented dryer. The advantage of having a vented dryer disappears where the vent run is long or where the vent ducting is located in a place you cannot clean it. Unfortunately, I do not think that most people bother to clean their dryer vent even once a year.

In many countries, Switzerland being one of the first....vented dryers are illegal! Of course if you have one, you may continue to use it, but no new vented dryers have been sold there for several years. Miele cites safety reasons, for no longer selling vented dryers to residential customers. Condenser or heat pump dryers can contain a fire much longer, than most vented models. I used a ventless dryer years ago in Sweden and Germany...and OMG, I too hated it. Hot, slow, moist, wrinkled!!! They are so much better now, and Miele, Electrolux 24" and I believe Blomberg have reverse tumbling whilst drying and cooling down. This drastically prevents & minimizes wrinkling, sheets and blankets balling up and moist/wet spots. 40 years of vented drying.....and I have been ventless/condenser for many months now, and I love it for the most part. Yes, it takes longer, but it is not too bad. Most loads are done in 60 mins of less, and that includes about 15 mins or Cooling Down.

The issue with the Asko washer is the controller board. My machine never worked on certain cycles. They replaced it and the replacement machine didn't work on the same cycles. After 8 years of use in a weekend house the controller board broke and could not be replaced. Apart from that I liked the washer. I didn't care for the Asko dryer at all. It was vented. Everything came out constantly wrinkled. The Bosch non-vented dryer had a larger capacity and put the Asko to shame performance wise. One poster here, suburbanmd, bought one of the deluxe Asko sets and returned it due to function issues. Here is a link to the thread which details the problems. You can take/leave free advice, of course. I'm not going to use your machine so for me, it makes no difference which one you decide to buy. Folks make their decisions based on many factors. However, I do have experience as an owner of 3 of the 4 compact major sets. I wouldn't go go Asko again and don't recommend it. Miele is a far better washer & dryer. The Bosch washer doesn't have the true hot washes but the capacity is good and the condenser dryer is excellent. I have no experience with Electrolux compact machines so I cannot comment on those. However, that machine has a heater. And there are posters here who own the machines and like them. IOW other better choices.

Thank you for the help everyone. I had the condo initially come out and blow out my vent from my wall up to the roof where it comes out. That was before I used my dryer for the first time and had that issue with drying clothes. I then had the condo come back out to blow out the vent from wall to roof again, but this time they had another person on the roof to make sure they were feeling the air blowing from my wall opening to the roof. My issue has always been that my wall vent opening is only 3-1/2" in diameter, not 4" like most. So in the past with other dryers Ive had, I had to tape the base of the 4" vent to my wall 3-1/2" opening so air wont escape or lint blow out the sides at times. I did that this time as well and its finally working good. I have been using the "timed" (high/heat) setting for most of my clothes when drying and usually within 60-90 minutes they are dry. I think problem is solved. Thank you again.

Everyone says you're welcome and I'm glad you got it fixed. It's a clogged vent most of the time, so I'm glad you got it checked. That can also be a fire hazard. Lint is extremely flammable.
