I was in the same boat as you. New kitchen and brand new cabinets. I used LifeLiner. It's available at Bed Bath & Beyond.

It's a clear ridged plastic material that comes on a roll in 2 widths, 12" & 24". It's heavy enough that it doesn't easily slide around and it's durable enough to put up with multiple washings if necessary.

Many people on this forum have recommended it.

The Lifeliner is good all purpose, I like the foam style liner for drinking glasses.

Avoid adhesive products that claim to be removable because it can pull off the finish on your shelves anyway.

this is a silly question, I'm sure.... but why exactly do people line their cupboard/drawers? I remember seeing my gma doing it, but I'm just not sure what that extra step actually does.

Love the cushy cupboards

I line them because 1) have have old cabinets and it grosses me out and 2) I like the look :)

For me, it was because I didn't want to damage or stain the cabinets if stuff spilled or from rusty bottoms of cans, God forbid! [I sound like a messy cook!] Just seemed safer to me. Can look pretty too.

I'll check out the BBB clear liner, but I don't recommend the Walmart & Target "Duck" brands that has holes in it. It appears to be pretty good & that it will breath, but also lie flat, but I'm having trouble getting it not to slide out with my things.

The "Duck" brand 4 to 5 years ago was great it was a solid textured cushion & I actually removed it from my old cabinets & washed it in the washing machine (& air dried). Any pieces that didn't have stains on it or not cut too small I am able to reuse, unfortunately I ran out & had to buy the newer stuff. I think Rubbermaid made something like this, but it is not what I found on the shelves these days.

I used to use Life Liner with the ridges, but it traps dust and gets really hard to clean.

Cushy Cupboards is a lot easier to live with. It's very easy to clean anything off of it and spills don't seem to spread. So far I've had a leaky bottle of laundry detergent and an orange soda. Clean up was so easy!!!

Lawjedi, with nicely finished cupboards liners aren't really necessary. Shelves and drawer bottoms used to be made with raw wood. It would absorb spills, get splinters, and leach acids (as in the stuff you buy acid free paper to avoid). Mostly, nowadays, lining is for habit, looks, a certain amount of gentility (as in gma did it), and also to make it a lot easy to clean up spills as well as protect the finish in the cupboards.

I didn't think I needed them when I got new cabinets. Now, after 18 years, I'm glad I never went to that trouble. Very few things have spilled in my cabinets. Now my fridge is another story....

thanks all... I tend to only keep dishes etc. in cupboards... totally forgot about potentially messy things. ;-P.

I hear you on the fridge!!!! so happy that glass shelves can now catch some of those spills.

We have a new kitchen. It is my second first-person-to-use-the-cabinets kitchen. I haven't used liner in either, and I don't regret or understand why I would...

(although I do understand that older cabinets might necessitate it after reading the above!!)

I lined all shelves and drawers. This is my first new kitchen and I want to keep it nice for a long time. The lining in my pot drawers also keeps them from moving around when the drawers are opened/closed.

I have not lined my new cabinets. I have central vac so I routinely vacuum out the crumbs and other stuff.
I wipe up spills right away.
I did line my old cabinets and that is because they were old and ugly and the liner looked better than my cabinets.

We have new kitchen cabinets. We didn't line them. I think I would do liner if I had old cabinets that were unattractive inside.

We painted all the insides of our old plywood cabinets recently, and lined the most heavily used shelves (especially where the cast iron pots go) with the squishy foam-type stuff with the holes in it, to reduce the wear on the paint, reduce noise, and provide a bit of softness for the china to sit on.

This type of liners doesn't help at all with spills because of the holes, in fact it makes cleanup harder as you have to take the liner out and clean it as well as the cabinet shelf.

I used cushy cupboards and love them. I wanted something to prevent water marks if I put away dishes that were slightly damp, or to keep oil bottles, etc from leaving a ring. Stuff slides easily and doesn't cause the liner to bunch which is a problem I had with the rubberized mats.

Another vote for Cushy Cupboards. My favorite spot is under the sink where spills may/do happen because it wipes clean so easily. Another great spot is under the pots and pans so the bottom of the stacked pans can be easily scooted out without dragging out the liner. Also, it saves the cabinets from being scratched if you have new cabinets. The rubber liners with waffle weave come out with the pans so that is the worst. The ridges on the BB&B liners collect crumbs, oil drips, etc and have to be removed and cleaned with a toothbrush.
I have had them all and slowly replaced them with CC when they are on sale.

I used a both the Life Liner (they also sometimes have it at Costco) and a foam liner - depending on the use. e.g., For my pots and lids and the drawer with my Foreman Grill, I used the foam liner in those drawers - not so noisy when putting away, and they (especially the lids) don't slide around when I close the drawer. I also put the foam in a drawer in my dining room where I have serving pieces - they also stay put and look nice and it's easy to find what I need. For dishes, I used the plastic ridged liner - easier to slide the dishes onto the shelf. In my pantry I used the Life Liner. Hope this is helpful.

I looked at life liner and cushy cupboards and others, but went with another option, trying to duplicate the clean look of my poly-woven placemats that I love--purchased a poly mesh from a fabric store--Sunbrella is the brand and "pvc mesh" is the lingo for the general type of fabric. It's a great choice usage-wise, my only regret is that the pattern I chose does not have a perpendicular weave so cutting it out myself was tricky in terms of keeping the lines straight. I adhered it to the shelves using a 3M product called "blue stick" (or something like that) which I got at Home Depot--it's a putty type adherent material that can be reused and does not leave residue. If you choose this route, I would try to get a perpendicular weave to make the cutting easier, also make sure you purchase something that does not fringe--i.e., use the term "pvc mesh" when talking with the salesperson and make clear what you are going to use it for.
