I thought I knew about powdered milk, now I have to think again..
Comments (4)Instant milk powder is a larger grain because it's puffed-up with air and is designed to be reconstituted in cold water - hence the INSTANT aspect. Non-instant requires warm/hot water to reconstitute. As Linda pointed out, that was the cause of your mixing problems. If a recipe calls for NON-instant powdered milk and all you have is INSTANT, you need to run the dry instant powder through a blender or food processor to make a fine powder BEFORE you measure it for a substitute for non-instant. There is just too much air in instant milk to use measure-for-measure for non-instant. Important to note... Because of so much air in instant dry milk, you may need as much as 50% more to equal the same amount as non-instant. So choose carefully and figure the amount of reconstituted milk each brand makes. It takes more instant milk than non-instant to make the same amount of milk. In my long history of using dry milk products exclusively (over 28-years) instant non-fat dry milk is rarely a bargain over non-instant because they never make as much reconstituted milk. Brands vary in taste, texture and what works in certain recipes the best, and because of that I keep 5 brands of dry milk and whey-based milk substitutes in storage (instant and non-instant). One brand of instant non-fat dry milk powder has nearly half the weight in a #10 can, and another 2/3 as much as my non-instant whey-based milk substitutes - so you nearly always get half as many servings with instant dry milk products than non-instant. If you are using powdered milk products with young children, you will want to include some dry whole milk products since children require the additional fat for brain development. -Grainlady...See MoreAzek Decking Material - What do you think about it?
Comments (195)SIGNIFICANT WATER POOLING ACROSS NEW DECK SURFACE We recently had a deck built with TimberTech Azek and it looks great. The product was recommended by our contractor and Big Creek Lumber. It is not cheap, nor was the installation ($40,000+). We had realistic expectations, but now we have problems. PROBLEMS: We have significant water pooling/cupping from a couple rains and some heavy mist. (I've also noticed dried dirt marks left behind when it finally dries, but that's a secondary issue.) CUSTOMER SERVICE: I reached out via phone to a representative from the website. He assured me that some "beading" was natural and over time this would stop. When it didn't stop, I reached out to my contractor because this is not "beading"; this is pooling. I waited a few more weeks and after more pooling from heavy mist and fog, I reached out to my contractor. My conscientious contractor said he has used this material before and has not seen or heard of the issue from any of his clients. He promptly gave me his rep's name and number. The rep said she's had no issues over the past 2 years and she would check—with someone—at the company. She emailed saying that "beading" was normal at first. I sent her deck photos of: Pooling/cupping from rain comparing my neighbor's dry, non-cupping, deck (with another composite-type product). So side by side, at the same time of day, with same weather conditions and sun exposure, my neighbor's deck was dry while mine was significantly pooling with standing water along the entire surface. I also sent a photo of significant pooling/cupping from heavy mist. I have asked the rep for a timeline of when this should stop or resolve itself. I haven't heard back yet and am concerned. A site search brought me to this page with the following: TimberTech's stated superiority over wood decking cupping. Product promotion that helps prevent cupping. Suggestions to dry your deck with a squeegee or mop when there is standing water. Dangers of "standing water," becoming slick (falling danger) and damage to the wood substructure. In summary, the site does not come out and admit pooling/cupping, but it talks about dangers and care of standing water. WHERE TO GO FROM HERE: I'll be calling the rep and asking for a site visit asap, unless anyone else has a suggestion....See MoreWhat do you think about this?
Comments (16)OK,I know there are human milk banks and that breast milk can be valuable for babies who have a need for it. I also know that those who contribute to human milk banks are very carefully screened. What I was asking is,would you go on craigslist and advertise? If the guy is really in need of breast milk why wouldn't he just go through his pediatrician to find it? Surely there is a better way than craigslist! LOL Personally I believe breast milk is the best for babies. But if there isn't a real need, like the baby is allergic to formulas or is a preemie or some other medical reason for needing it,why not just put the baby on a good formula? In my "unprofessional" opinion,I would rather take the chance on a formula than rely on breast milk from someone I didn't know.If you just pick someone off craigslist how do you know that person is using good hygiene or that the milk is properly packaged or even what kind of diet or drugs (even prescription drugs) the person is on.All breast milk is not created equal.Babies can have allergies to things that mothers eat.Babies can be allergic to breast milk! So many questions that would make me very leery! I'm glad some of you agree with me....See MoreDo you think, and rethink, and think again about your choices?
Comments (46)I used to be much more cavalier about discarding roses but I've changed my ways. For one, it takes so long for bands to grow into ornamental plants with little rain. Besides, by now I should know better and be more discriminating in what I order. I know now that Maggie does not ring my chimes but she's staying. Charles Darwin, of which I have two, hardly lasts one day, but I hope with age that will improve. Mrs. Henry Morse is one of those early hybrid teas that take forever to put on growth so that might have been a mistake. I'll try fish solution to hurry her along. Mme. Antoine Mari's flowers are really too delicate for the heat, but there again I hope she'll toughen up with age. Sometimes I wish desperately that I could begin the whole process over again, amend the soil properly before planting, install drip watering right away and choose roses as though my life depended on it. Oh well........See Moretibbrix
