Animals - you can't live with them-you can't live without them
Comments (36)Thanks again all: Boa is doing much better. She is eating like a horse, but still doesn't want to be left alone. I can't believe the difference in her since I stopped the antibiotics. She demands food now, and her catmilk. Her and Bear got into their first fisticuffs in a long time when I was taking too long to get the food in the dish. She got a huge dish of whipped cream yesterday (her favorite) and didn't leave a smidgen in the bowl for Apache to finish. She is back on the tapazole now for the hyperthyroidism and doesn't even know it's in her food. I am breathing a sigh of relief. I know nothing can live forever, but I can hope. Think she will be with us for a while longer. Praise God for answering my prayers. Jenny...See MoreFood for sore mouths..
Comments (27)I am definitely feeling better today, but the antibiotics make me feel tired, weak, and a bit nauseous. I am glad I stayed home from work yesterday, as I was up until 2:00 AM the night before because pain medication had worn off. I didn't feel pain yesterday and did not have to take any more pain medication, however. I had some chicken bones from an Algerian Roast chicken that I had made before, and I made stock from that. I wasn't sure how it would turn out because it had a lot of seasoning on it, and I normally do not make stock with salt. However, I did like the way it came out. I boiled the bones (with a fair amount of meat left) with a carrot, celery, parsnip, onion, garlic, and three bay leaves. I took some of the stock out after about an hour to use in some Ramen soup, and then I added more water and cooked the stock for two hours more and let it rest until almost cool. I used the last part of the stock to make egg noodle soup with mushrooms and broccoli. I removed the florets from the broccoli and then sliced the stems very thinly and threw those into the stock. I also made a roux, to which I added part of the stock and the mushrooms, and then I cooked the egg noodles and broccoli florets in the main stock, which I had already strained. I only put a small amount of black pepper in because I was told to avoid spicy foods. This soup came out fairly bland (by my standards), but I still liked it, and I think Kevin liked it more than I did. I made quite a bit, and I still have enough left over for me to have tonight. After today, I hope to go back to more regular food, but I still have to irrigate the surgery area with a syringe type tool that my doctor gave me. Jenny, have you gotten your flipper yet? I imagine that front teeth will be harder to deal with, and my molar was at the very back, and so it is fairly easy to avoid that area. Annie, when Kevin had one of his implants, he also had to have a bone graft, which sounded painful to me, but he survived it okay. He only recently replaced his bridge with an implant. They are fairly expensive, but I cannot imagine not having the teeth. I hope I am done with this for a while. Lars...See MoreRoot Canal issues
Comments (44)How do you deal with your dentist? This is what happens at my dentist's office. I go in for teeth cleaning. I always request this Ukrainian woman whom I feel does a good job. She takes X-rays of my teeth. She then cleans my teeth. Then she says she's going to bring in the dentist to examine my teeth, in case there are any problems. When the dentist pops into the room and looks at my teeth, she always finds problems. Two years ago, the dentist said I needed a root canal on one of my molars. Due to how expensive a root canal is, I only got around to having the root canal done last month. And I did not have my dentist do it. Instead, I went to Boston University's dental school for the procedure. It was much cheaper because it was done by a dental student under the supervision of a faculty member. On Monday I went to my regular dentist for cleaning. This time she found a couple of teeth that need fillings. But here's the big one: She feels that one of my lower back teeth needs a crown. I told her point blank that if I need a crown I'm returning to Boston University for I cannot afford her rates. In terms of the regular fillings, I can afford her but I'm wondering whether I really need them. I'm curious how other people handle their dentists. Do you simply go along with what your dentist suggests in terms of work that needs to get done on your teeth?...See MoreSick Chihuahua (teeth?)
Comments (5)Annie, Thank You. Well first because she's been so itchy the Vet did a skin scrap and checked for mites..negative. Did a bunch of blood work and will get back with me. Examined her all over and could not even find a hint of any fleas/ticks. Checked her mouth...wasn't surprised she lost a tooth at her age and told me Chi's are notorious for losing teeth at about this age. She will lose the other top front one as its loose. All the others seem ok. No sign of any oral infection and tartar is almost nil. ( we have always since puppyhood brushed one or two teeth daily. Starting back at the beginning when we finish them all) . She must have lost the tooth sometime in the past two weeks when we were not brushing do to family issues. She was given a injection for allergies, a Vit B-12, and something for her belly. The papers in the van so I can't give the meds names until tomorrow. Vet said he thinks she's having acid reflux to the point its burning her throat. Anyway once home she slept for three hours, got up grabbed a toy and begged for food. I cooked fresh chicken while she was sleeping and wow...she chowed it down. No problem chewing or swollowing. I'm sure the allergy shot helped boost her appetite but maybe the shot for her belly helped also. Shes had gastro issues in the past. She will be taking a Pepsid day from now on. I was so happy to see her eat. Little Lil is the only pet I've ever had until 6 months ago...she's the love of my life....See Morepolly929
