Sick Chihuahua (teeth?)

A quick rundown.
She's almost 9yo.
For the past week end she's not wanting to eat. Not even boiled boneless skinless chicken breasts torn up or pureed. She's tried a few bites but acted like she was having trouble chewing and swollowing. She continues begging for food which tells me she actually wants to eat.
Her bark sounds fine but when she growls it sounds funny kinda hoarse.
I looked at her teeth and find she lost a front top tooth and the other is loose. This is new since a month ago she had her well check. Her gums are pretty red.
She's drinking well and continues to play.
She of course has a vet appt tonight at 6pm.
I'm guessing she has a dental infection that may have spread into her throat???
Thoughts?

Annie, Thank You.

Well first because she's been so itchy the Vet did a skin scrap and checked for mites..negative.

Did a bunch of blood work and will get back with me.

Examined her all over and could not even find a hint of any fleas/ticks.

Checked her mouth...wasn't surprised she lost a tooth at her age and told me Chi's are notorious for losing teeth at about this age. She will lose the other top front one as its loose. All the others seem ok. No sign of any oral infection and tartar is almost nil. ( we have always since puppyhood brushed one or two teeth daily. Starting back at the beginning when we finish them all) . She must have lost the tooth sometime in the past two weeks when we were not brushing do to family issues.

She was given a injection for allergies, a Vit B-12, and something for her belly. The papers in the van so I can't give the meds names until tomorrow.

Vet said he thinks she's having acid reflux to the point its burning her throat. Anyway once home she slept for three hours, got up grabbed a toy and begged for food. I cooked fresh chicken while she was sleeping and wow...she chowed it down. No problem chewing or swollowing. I'm sure the allergy shot helped boost her appetite but maybe the shot for her belly helped also. Shes had gastro issues in the past. She will be taking a Pepsid day from now on.

I was so happy to see her eat. Little Lil is the only pet I've ever had until 6 months ago...she's the love of my life.

I have a rescued chihuahua- pug mix.She now weighs 8 lbs and is 3 yrs old. She tears up when unhappy and shivers at cold,excitement and fear. When i got her. she was scared of her own shadow but after lots of praises and loving,she'll take on just about anything.I've never known anyone to encourage a dog to bark and growl but that's what i did. I also have a blue heeler-hound mix(also a rescue dog). He now weighs 60 lbs. my little cricket is the boss of the house. Dillen plays well with her, but come mealtime he's afraid of her threats and i have to feed them across the room from each other. They are both on self feeders, but the vet said i have to start limiting Dillens feed this winter as he does'nt get as much excersize as he did and has gained too much weight. Cricket limits herself so no worries there. Has anyone noticed their Chi seems sensitive to any sounds? Cricket is sensitive to my tv when i lose the signal and it kinda sounds off a little screech sound. That is the only time she still runs fo cover.

Had a routine check-up for my 14 yr. old cat, Chloe in Oct. Her blood tests were all normal, but she had gingivitis and needed some teeth removed. We felt we should do this and could prolong her life. Never were we told of what the consequences could be. She was perfectly healthy. Had good appetite and was loving her KD. She almost died 4 yrs ago, of some kind of poisoning. This could have affected her kidneys. They brought her back then. After surgery, they gave her the opiated meds, stayed over night, no antibiotics. She was lifeless when brought home. Two days later, I knew something was not right. She didn't move. Sat. we took her to vet again. They administered G-SubQ fluids, and noticed the suture had come out. So, they gave her antibiotics then and gave us the meds to take home. She was a basket case. They had said to give the pain meds 12hrs apart but after 7 hrs. at home they said give her more. We didn't want to but we did. By Sunday, she was still not responding. Brought her in again on Mon., they gave her fluids and more meds and this time a shot of anti-biotics that lasts 12 days. By Tues, we brought her in again and she stayed over night where they put IV in and did blood tests and had an ultra sound to see what was going on. They thought she had kidney stones blocking but it turned out to be an enlarged heart. How did this happen? We brought her home on Wed. and had questions for the Dr. Called 4 times and never returned a call. She had pooped and peed and we thought maybe thats a sign. We stopped giving her the opiate. We administered a different antibiotic they sent us home with. Meanwhile she had stopped eating the whole time. By this time we felt we should feed her through a syringe, since the vet never mentioned anything about feeding her. Later we gave her the fluids at home and then gave her the antibiotic they had given us. By this time she was lifeless. Thurs., and Fri came and went. No call from the vet asking how she was doing, NOTHING!! We were on our own. Chloe passed Sat. morning peacefully at 4am. She became so weak couldn't even stand.We were with her till her last breath. We are so sick now. We brought her in to prolong her life and this is what happened. Never did they tell us what the consequences could be. Doing research now and the opiate meds they gave her, say not to give to cats with kidney problems. I feel they overmedicated her and gave her the wrong meds. She was great before we brought her in. Had a healthy appetite, showed nothing of any pain. Still no word from the VET!! I think they know what they did. I truly believe this was malpractice. We miss her so much. It's so hard.

I think we have pretty much established what led to the problem I know you think you have, but I can tell you flat out you are mistaken. First of all normal dominance is rarely the reason behind such serious dog-to-dog aggression. This goes way beyond that. Even a certified behaviorist isn't going to suggest any behavior modification without a clean bill of health from the Vets which will include more than what you have had done. Not your fault jus that the health of the dog that died may have been a huge factor. Anyway a behaviorist will come and see the behavior of each dog to see if the dog dogs has poor socialization, lack of structure, weak nerves, etc. and than see how they inter- react with each other. If you can't afford a behaviorist than please get a hold of this guy at the link supplied below ...explain all that has happened. I think you will find him to be very unbderstanding and helpful. Thanks Annie. Today the sparkle is back in her eyes. She ate very well today and played often. I'll be keeping a close eye out for any changes.

You didn’t mention where your girl is itching, but often times, that can be the sign of an allergy of some sort. When our dog was licking and itching, I had her allergy tested. They can only test for outside irritants, but to my surprise, in addition to testing positive for several kinds of mites (including grain mites) she test positive for yeast. I ended up having to put her on allergy drops that are made specifically for her, but if she eats anything with yeast in it like kibble or treats, she starts licking her paws, scratching and scooting like crazy.

The testing is a bit pricey, 200 or so, the medicine is expensive too. 250 for 6 months worth of drops, but at least she’s not biting and scratching herself raw.

My point is, is that you may want to try looking at her food and environment as a source for the itching. Maybe change her food to see if that helps or keep her mostly on pavement instead of grass where mites are found. Ellie test postive for grain mites too, so even though we feed her grain free, we still keep it stored in an air tight container and freeze if for 48 hours to ensure grain mites aren’t thriving in it. (Which I guess is pretty common).

Glad that she’s eatting again and is on the mend.
