My cat died
Comments (16)I would like to plant something in her memory, but haven't decided yet. Maybe some catmint - hee-hee! She was strictly an indoor kitty, but when she was younger, I bought a small kitty leash and would take her out for a walk - on her terms of course. Sometimes she would walk and sometimes she would lay on the grass and roll around or eat the grass (then puke it up later). I took her outside in the backyard again last week so she could lay in the grass and sun herself for a while. She did try chewing on a couple blades of grass, but then decided she was going to walk down the driveway into the alley. I scooped her up before she got to the alley. Sure didn't want to lose her that way!...See MoreWhat do you pay for cat teeth cleaning?
Comments (36)As some others have mentioned, teeth cleaning is absolutely unnecessary if animals are fed properly (a raw, species appropriate diet). And I disagree with one poster who said the cost is probably the same as dental work. What s/he fails to factor in is the suffering the animal must endure, not only from dental disease but from periodic anesthesia (which is not harmless), cleanings and extractions, not to mention other very common health issues that result from the same causes (primarily, commercial pet foods) like UTIs, liver disease, FIV, and the like. Even if you just consider the financial cost, you're way ahead feeding raw. Dental cleanings are big business in the vet industry, and a vet will never tell you how to avoid them. They are not taught this information in school, because the system that trains them would fold up and die if it taught vets how to keep animals healthy and illness-free for life. Feeding cats raw is the easiest thing in the world. Cut a leg off a cornish game hen and put it on a plate. That's dinner. If your cat won't eat it that way, cut it in small bites or use some of the transition strategies that are published in various places on the web. Comments (21)I didn't know about the wet food push. My cat lost all of his tiny gummer teeth the first year we had him. There the ones between the canines. He has a terrible time with constipation. I give him Sheba wet food mixed with pumpkin, water and a prescription every day. It doesn't help much. I tried mineral oil in his food and he won't eat it. He lost a few teeth about a month ago. They were all attacted on a plate like tooth. Now he has trouble some times with his food getting stuck in his teeth. I have no extra money to take him to the vet now. He really needs his teeth cleaned. He is 7 years old. I keep praying God with send the money soon. It breaks my heart that he has to suffer. He is my best kitty friend ever....See MoreTeeth cleaning in older cats ...
Comments (8)I must admit that I have been very lax in providing routine dental cleanings for my animals. HOWEVER, several of my cats have developed serious tooth infections and required extensive dental procedures including multiple tooth extractions to return their mouths to pain-free functionality. They were in such intense pain before their dental procedures that to sit back and do nothing was not an option. One of them was 18+ yrs old, hyperT and CRF at the time of the dental procedure and extractions, and he came through it just fine and is still going strong two years later. The other was 15 and hyperT, and she also came through the procedure fine and is doing well now. Untreated dental infections can cause serious and permanent damage to the heart and kidneys, so if your cat's teeth are in bad shape, dental cleaning is important for his overall health. There are precautions that can and should be taken when performing dental procedures on elderly cats. You can find them at the link below.
