Talking hubs into an electric smoker

I've been reading all the threads on using smokers. Now that the weather is warming up, it would really be nice to have an option for cooking outdoors. I've only been working on hubs for the last 3 years to get an electric smoker.

My biggest and hubs biggest question is what kind of maintenance would be required on an electric smoker. We scrub the dickens out of the grates on the grill. Do smoker grates get scrubbed? There has to be some kind of container under the smoker to hold fats and juices that flow from the meats. How hard is that to clean??

These questions are basic, but we live in FL where there is no decent place to buy smoked meats and even fewer choices for acceptable barbecue.

Thanks!
