Homemade laundry soap vs. Charlies Soap?
Comments (41)To those of you who have been using these "home made" detergents, are you experiencing any odor, mold or mildew issues? The reason I ask is because castile soap builds up into a gooopy, gel-like gunk if not properly rinsed. This could potentially cause problems in washers. Every home-made product I've tried - from detergent to fabric softener - has proven unsatisfactory. Either the products don't clean well, they risk building up in my machine or on my clothes or they just don't work. Price is not the only consideration, which is what appears to be driving this homemade laundry movement....See MoreIt's official...I HATE Charlie's Soap Powder Detergent
Comments (154)I find this thread discouraging. I started using Charlie's Soap due to recommendations on this forum, but the vehemence of the opinions here is hard to figure?! Does anyone consider why they have such strong opinions about laundry detergent? Or whether they feel these strongly worded comments are actually helpful to the forum? Clearly, some of the difference with results has to have something to do with the difference in water from one community to another. Hard water, soft water, heavily treated water have to make a big difference in how a detergent works. I have seen a few comments here that point out the basic reasoning that many people had in using Charlie's soap, but it bears repeating. Using a detergent that has fewer harsh chemicals and less negative effect on the environment and the water supply. And the second big reason was trying to escape the overabundance of products that cause reactions to the skin from who knows what ingredients. What I want to use as a laundry detergent, is a product that cleans clothes well but is made from natural ingredients that do not affect the water supply or the environment. And definitely, a product that rinses completely out of the clothes so that there is no residue to sit on the skin and either provoke a reaction or be absorbed into the body. It would be more helpful to me, to read comments from someone who actually knows and understands what is in these competing products and what affect they have on not just cleaning the clothes, but do they affect the environment and do they leave a residue that can cause a problem for the skin? And I'm also trying to avoid fragrances. I really dislike them across the board, unless they are natural fragrances, as in coming from essential oils or something. I don't wear perfume and I find it difficult to spend time in a room with someone who does wear it. Bottom line - this thread did not help me figure out which detergent is going to help me have the laundry experience I am looking for....See MoreBaby-safe detergent or soap for front loaders?
Comments (10)I have no idea about the front loaders. I don't recommend Dreft. It didn't clean clothes very well. I'd suggest trying the perfume free, dye free detergents. I think I used All, but I don't remember for sure. The "free" detergents seem to clean and they don't irritate the baby. I think I switched back to my normal detergent after the first container because babies do get adjusted to their environment after a short while. This is a little off topic, but I'll add it since I'm assuming you're worried about irritating the babies skin. Babies will often get a case of "infant acne" or a rash on their face around four-six weeks. It's not caused by detergent or improper cleaning, etc. Mother Natures chooses this way to get mom's hormones out of the baby's system. It's looks awful for a couple of weeks and then clears up. Congratulations on your baby! Adella...See MoreThe Laundry Detergent recipe
Comments (0)I've never heard of Fels Naptha bar soap. Will another brand do? JoAnn, Do you think it would be okay if I could post the homemade laundry detergent recipe that many of us use? If so, here it is. Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent 1 Fels Naptha bar soap (Sunlight Bar for Canadians) 1 cup washing soda 1/2 cup borax 4 cups hot water Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan of hot water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap is melted. Fill a 5-gallon pail half-full with hot water. Add melted soap, washing soda and borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Add more hot water until the pail is full. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken. The next morning it will be a gel-like consistency. Dilute the gel 1/2 and 1/2 with water in a laundry jug. Use 1/2 cup for top-load machines and 1/4 cup for front-load. (I just fill the cap on the laundry jug) The concentrate can be used as a stain pre-treater. It works great to remove carpet stains!...See Morerococogurl
