We're renewing our vows!!

I'm so excited. We're taking our family on a cruise next month for our 50th and hubby wants to renew our vows. Has anybody done that and what was the ceremony like? I don't have a dress to my name so that gives me an excuse for shopping. The grandkids are excited about it and we're looking forward to spending good times with them.

Based on the photos, it looks like you are just east of Twin Cities near the St Croix river. You will have more options than most other areas of the state because it is warmer and wetter (it's all relative!) Couple of things to consider: 1) rural MN in that area is going to be overrun with antlered forest rodents. Anything you care about you should fence unless it is noxious to deer or possibly close to your house. Protect your seedlings! 2) 3 acres is a pretty good sized lot. As long as the trees aren't close to your house, I wouldn't worry too much about taking things out. Folks are right about EAB and all, but you have lots of other land to work with, and in the mean time, you get the shade from ash trees! You will have lots of time to replant that area if/when the ash do die. 3) Not sure where you are from, but watch for ticks from about spring green up until just after 4th of July. I hate those buggers and they are endemic in eastern MN. It helps to keep walking areas well mowed. 4) underbrush is most likely buckthorn. It is rampant around here. Look for clumps of small black berries on the growth. Also, if you strip off the bark, it will be yellowish underneath. If it is, you have lots of work ahead of you. The only positive is buckthorn is weak rooted, and smaller plants can be removed fairly easily by hand or with a shovel, or with a tree puller like a weed wrench. Google "buckthorn removal" and you will find a TONS of stuff. 5) Common native trees in that area are: - oak: burr, white, northern pin are very common - green ash - maple: sugar, silver and some red. Also boxelder, but don't plant this - basswood - hackberry - willow - american elm (DED problems) - black locust - black cherry - white pine and other conifers (red pine, red cedar, spruce) - but I am not partial to them, so don't worry about THOSE 6) I could suggest a ton on non-natives that would do well in your area, but not sure what you are looking for. 7) Someone mentioned local extension. Check with your county, for example: http://www.mnwcd.org/land/trees/. Lots counties sell small seedlings very cheaply to landowners. They are small, generally always a small selection, native, and have large minimums (25 or 50 tree minimum is not uncommon).

How Severe Is The Drought & We're Seeing It Spread Northward

Dorothy, I have been watching your county on the drought maps and had noticed your usual waterfall of rain had stopped falling. At least you probably have good, residual soil moisture a few inches down which is great for the trees, although it doesn't do much for the more shallow-rooted plants, does it? Recession and drought together. Perhaps we are about to relive the 1930s. Doesn't that sound depressing? My dad told me that they lived on what they could grow during those horrible years, and about all they had to eat was red beans and corn....corn bread, corn meal mush, etc. At least they had food though. And, for the rest of his life, one of his favorite meals was red beans and corn bread and he ate it at least once a week. Jessaka, Y'all are not supposed to have drought up there is lush and lovely Tahlequah! It isn't fun, is it. I am sure you are watering enough. Your plants ought to be fine on 1 to 2" of irrigation a week. If you want to measure how much moisture you're giving them, and if you are using sprinklers, just set empty, clean cat food or tuna cans around the yard (you only need a couple) and turn on the sprinkler. Once the cans have an inch of water in them, you can turn off the sprinkler, or empty the cans and refill them again. Most winters, I only water my landscape if we're getting less than 1" of rain per month. However, because our drier than average conditions are in their 18th month here, I am trying to give the landscape area around the house 1" a week to make up for all the moisture that didn't fall in 2008. Y'all, this drought is starting to worry me. Last time it was this dry, even my native pasture grasses and forbs died and it took a long time for them to make a comback. Some of the pasture land around us where cows actually graze was so overgrazed in 2006 that it really hasn't even recovered well yet--the pastures are thin and patchy and now they're overgrazed again. I'm glad we don't have cows because, if we did, we wouldn't have anything growing for them to eat. The deepening of the drought really concerns me. Our ponds have never stayed dried through the whole winter before...even in 05-06, there was rain in Sept.-Oct. 2005 that kept water in the ponds for part of the fall and winter. This is the first time they've gone through the whole fall/winter empty. One still has a foot or so of water but it is very stagnant and yucky looking. We too are on the tags for our garbage. Paying by the bag sure makes me stop and think of what all can be given to a good charity, recycled, and even composted. I also make sure I'm getting my 'bag's cost' worth too. Yesterday I was needing something quick and bigger to really fill my bag before taking it off. I finally got rid of an old ski tube that had been in the basement and unused for probably 15 years. It had a small leak when it went down there, but over the years the plastic became quite brittle and thus useless. When I dropped off my bag and and recycles (at the corner drop off point on Tues between 3-7PM) I asked the fella working there if he knew of anyone who welcomed scrap metal, as they don't take it at the corner. I got the name and number of a local fella so now I can gather together all my metal stuff/junk, and either deliver it to him, or he will come and get it. It's not much, but it needs gone and I really don't want to send it to the landfill, besides having to pay to send it there. Yes, I'm feeling a bit refreshed. I'm not sure what today's challenge is going to be, but will be reading all the accomplishments everyone has made. Mcpeg, you have us 'pumped'. Sue

Renewal of vows- any advice??

I promised in this post to post my vows. Again, we didn't exactly do vows. My brother-in-law started the "ceremony" be announcing that we would basically recite our thoughts and feelings. He did a wonderful job. I don't have a copy of dh's words, but you'll get the idea from mine below. We had this party as a backyard picnic sort of thing, did the "ceremony" on our deck with microphones. It turned out beautifully. Really enjoyed it. Here is what I said (names changed to protect our privacy) My dearest John, 25 years ago, we stood at the alter together and pledged our commitment to each other. I remember standing there hoping we would be right for each other and that everything would work out for us. Little did I realize what a gem of a man I was marrying. We have had a wonderful twenty-five years together. This ceremony would not be complete without the mention of our wonderful children. We were both elated at the birth of each of our children. And have continued to be very proud parents as they have each grown into wonderful human beings. And each has their special traits and personality. Dana is a beautiful young woman who has really blossomed with her education and Chinese language and cultural experience. And John has turned into a wonderful young man with the determination to learn to fly at 17. But John, you have been a wonderful man, husband and father. No woman could ask for anything more. YouÂve put up with me for all these years and I know that has not been easy. I know that I can be demanding and difficult at times, but I have always loved you. When we got married, we had nothing, except our love for each other. WeÂve both worked long and hard for everything we have today. We were only in our early 20Âs when we married and we sort of grew up together. But the most important thing we have that we have built is this marriage. WeÂve had our good times and our bad. As I write this I try to think of our good times together, but I canÂt think of any in particular, because our entire marriage has been our good times. Our next 25 years together promises to hold some unusual challenges for us both. But at this point IÂm certain we will make it through those challenges. Thankyou John, for all that youÂve meant to me. I love you John Robert Smith and I always will.

If your vow renewal ceremony will take place onboard the ship, contact the ship's company now to inquire -- I'm sure they must have "packages" and useful/helpful information.

WOW I would love to do that. We have 6 more years to get to that anniversary. Hope our health gets us that far.

I'd take another 20 or so years.

We renewed our vows on our 20th anniversary. My DH surprised me with it. I had always teased him that he never proposed to me. He didn't. We just always talked about getting married and then we did. Never the down on one knee thing. So on our 20th, it was a Wed. Kids home after school. Had a band concert that night.... I am mopping the kitchen floor, he comes in and in front of the kids asks me to marry him, again. I laughed and said of course. He said, great! Can you be ready in an hour? I said.... what????? I had ONE dress I could still squeeze into, put on that. Had no time to do nails or other such stuff. The kids scrambled into nice clothes and we went off to Tahoe. We live 30 minutes from there. He had it all set up with a cute little chapel there. My son, who was 15 at the time, just kept shaking his head and saying this is so lame. I have a concert tonight.... He really was put out about it. My DD was so excited. Well, we get to the chapel and we go in. They have us pick out some music. My husband says, wait! he goes out to the car, has a bouquet for me and one for DD. He has boutineers for him and son. My son is shaking his head this is so lame....... We are all laughing. So son walks me down the aisle and DD is waiting there and DH. We say a few words from our hearts and we are all teary eyed, I look over DH's shoulder at my son and he is weepy too..... I laugh, in the middle of it I stop and ask him if it is still lame. He says No.... and wipes some tears away. We are all laughing about it.

Then when it comes time to exchange rings, husband asks for mine back and gives it to the lady performing the ceremony and she adds another ring to my set. He had it custom made, not sure how he did that cause mine is all twisty and it matches up perfectly. I was shocked. It had more stones in it and makes my ring look totally different.

Anyway, we did all that, went to an early dinner in Tahoe and made it back for the concert.

Now here we sit at 32 years. Maybe we will do it again someday.

I still tell him that ceremony meant more to me than the first one. This one came from his heart. We could have gone to dinner or had something on the weekend like we usually do/did. But he went to all this trouble to plan it and surprise me with it meant that he really would do it all over again!

That is lame! Only kidding, I think it's very cool. We were supposed to renew our vows when we took that cruise to Hawaii in 2007, but the ship broke down and we missed that island stop. Princess Cruises gave us a check for $500 good on a future cruise, I'm still resenting them!
