long blooming climbing rose

I am planning an arbor about 5'x5'x8' tall as a entrance to a garden area. The area gets high dappled morning shade and full afternoon sun. The soil is clay and on a slope so ammending should prevent pooling. We're just north of Atlanta and under drought water restrictions.

I would like to have a climbing rose cover the arbor that blooms a long time, is disease/pest resistant, colorful, doesn't require exceptional care, and drought resistant in approximately that order.

Can you provide recommendations?

You forgot a couple of things. I suspect it should be fragrant and hardy too.
Try Kudzu with plastic or silk roses attached. Kudzu survives anything, and the artificial roses will last forever.

To be serious, we're all looking for that climber.

And self-deadheading? :)

Try a noisette or a Tea-Noisette or a climbing Tea such as Crepuscule, Cl. Lady Hillingdon, Alister Stella Grey. They do take longer to get established than a modern rose, but in the long run they are less care and may bloom better and more constantly than the modern climbers, with less blackspot problems. A well established rose of those types will be somewhat drought tolerant as well--no rose is truly drought tolerant (like a cactus).

Also ask over at the Antique Rose forum for a good Climbing Tea or Tea-Noisette/Noisette. I'm sure you will get lots of good suggestions.

I recommend that you listen to michaelg. When your roses get large and you don't have the time to do all that cutting, you can learn to snap off spent bloom at the abscission layer. It makes absolutely no difference whether you cut at an angle or cut to an outside facing bud. In fact, you may slow rebloom by doing so on some cultivars. Don't believe me. Look at my garden and judge for yourself. I've been doing this for years. Your precious time is better spent watering, weeding, and mulching. Exceptions are long, tall, narrow Hybrid Tea-types that grow 30 inch stems, roses you're planted in the wrong space that are too large for the area...and roses I never deadhead at all because they rebloom no matter what. Another vote here for Dortmund. In Dortmund, you will get the colour, vigour, disease resistance and repeat flowering that you are looking for. But it's not great on fragrance (my nose says no fragrance at all). You will still need to prune (you won't find any climber out there that looks good without pruning). I am a big fan of Parade. But not for it's disease resistance. It's leaves stay healthy until late July, when black spots start to bite. How badly affected it is depends on the weather condition and the disease pressure in the area. On summers with frequent rainy day/warm day cycles, it can be badly affected. I usually don't mind this a bit, because it stays completely unscathed during it's biggest display, usually June through to early July. This year has been an excellent year for the health of this rose - it is barely touched by blackspot - as of yesterday. If strong colors against a pale background is important to you, my suggestion is Dortmund over Parade. The pale reverse of Parade's petals which works so well against darker backgrounds, may not work well against a pale background.

Your hampered by a few things...Cold, Climate, Choice , Colour and Rebloom. There is no such thing as a "continous" blooming rose, with much pampering you might get a repeat blooming rose to hold a few buds all summer. But most roses kind of bloom in flushes. 1. Your in a zone 5b, not all zone 5s are created equal, but out of your list, only 3 roses would thrive here. a. John Davis, is more of a big bush then something throwing out huge canes, it will get to about 8 feet tall or so with support, the flower are nice however, I like this rose alot. b. Viking Queen, aka Isabell Skinner, Ive seen this rose to about 9 feet somewhere here, in fact I might get this rose this year, I havent decided yet. C. The fairy, will not climb here, it may get to be a fairly large relax bush over time, and if it doesnt get to crazy cold for the winter. Everything else on your list wouldnt thrive here, some would die, some would survive to grow and have a few blooms. The largest climber I grow is baltimore belle, white with sometimes pink undertones, but its a once blooming rambler. However, if people in your area can grow awakening, or new dawn, that probable fits your bill more then the other roses listed. Both of those would just die back here near the ground every year. Ive known people who bought Eden rose here, Ive NEVER seen it survive though. Ive seen a William Baffin make it to about 20 feet once, but not sure you want a hot pink , semi double rose. Its not a rose for everyone, but I wish more poeple would play with its genetics and produce tall, healthy, hardy roses for the north. Just to clarify, a "Tea" rose is different than a "Hybrid Tea" rose. Not everyone is aware of the difference, so I thought I would clarify just in case.

My crepuscule appears to be a water hog. I've been quite pleased with the Hybrid musk "Lavender Lassie"... grows like a weed, and really hasn't been out of bloom at all this season. She's been doing well with some neglect while I'm away from home on business for two weeks at a time.

Well, how old is your Crepuscule?
None of these roses is going to be in the LEAST drought tolerant until it
is mature, and has some honkin' roots down there.

For that matter, if I had to stand out in the sun in Arizona, I think I'd be hoggin'
the water, myself. :-)

However, we've seen Teas, Chinas, and Noisettes survive under some fairly
brutal conditions in the hot, dry, Sierra Foothills, where the only water is
whatever comes along in the form of winter rain.
(There isn't really any summer rain.)

It's worth noting, however, that one of the ways these roses survive drought
is to quit blooming and slip into semi-dormancy in the hottest, driest weather.

Perhaps the hyphen would be helpful.. lol.

Crepie is on her second season from a cutting. I started her the same time as Lavender Lassie and Nymphenburg. All plants get the same amount of water... but guess who took off with our deluges this summer.. Crepie! Her canes are a good 2 feet longer than Lassie or Nymph. And I expected a slow grower! YIKES! We've had a hot, wet summer.. and all my roses receive full sun all day (when it's not raining).

Thanks all for the input. I will post in the Antique Rose forum if they are likely to be longer blooming since that is my top priority. Also, I will check in Georgia Gardening since climate is probably an important factor.

I only have one climbing rose, but I like it a lot. Try Don Juan. It is in bloom most of the time for me.

You might try Sombruelli (sp). I wouldn't describe it as long blooming. It gets a great spring flush (5/10-6/15) of pure white and now is starting on it's second flush which , I guess will take me thru 10/1.

It's a strong grower (I think mine is graphted on to Dr. Huey.). If I spray every 2 - 3 weeks it has very little BS. Around here that's not an easy thing to do. I don't think it requires any more water than the rest of my roses. It's under a drip irragation so it get whatever the rest gets.

I planted mine in 2003, it did horribly the first year (my fault) and now has covered my 8x10x10 foot shed. I'm using some in my wife's bridal bouquet (we're renewing our vows, today).

I'd recommend Fourth of July, though I have no idea if its drought tolerant. But it meets your other requirements to a T. Mine is such a vigorous grower and bloomer that I suspect it could handle environmental stress quite well.

Thank you all for you helpful suggestions. I am thinking that Fourth of July, Climbing Old Blush and Viking Queen are the ones I like best. Comments? Are they readily available?

Fourth of July should be widely available through local nurseries -- tho
at this time of the year, perhaps not.
