Hood order - any last minute changes?

We need to go ahead an order our hood. It is being custom done by Abakka with remote blower (just the insert- surround will be done by local metal smith) due to a window behind the stove, the hood wil be place higher than normal. So we are attempting to compensate for that with a larger capture area

Stove 30" blue star

Hood liner dimensions - mounted to wall / window header trim about an inch out from wall -

38.25" length (so with shell, 40")
25" deep (with shell, 27") from wall / back of stove
10" duct
External 1400 blower mounted on roof - but not very short duct run as
Roof is directly over kitchen there.
Any changes?

We have an Abakka blower too. Ours is also roof mounted right above the kitchen. You might want to see if you should do the noise reduction kit. Here is another thing about the duct. The noise reduction kit has to be in a section of the duct that is horizontal to actually impact the sound waves. So plan the duct run carefully even if it is short.

It'll be like 8" short or maybe less so no room
For the muffler. How loud is yours?

cookingmama, Sounds great. I am updating all most of our appliances as well. Going with bluestar and electrolux like you. We have a warming drawer and I would encourage you to review how you would use it. If you are entertaining a great deal, or need to keep late dinners warm, maybe. We personally use ours to store potatoes and onions!!! Question if you will get the value out of it> Good luck

Samjal, I hope you build as a big a house as you and your family want and can comfortably afford! How great that you are so close to your large extended family. Given your lack of building experience, I agree you should not manage this process yourself. You will not be able to spot subtle things being done wrong. Building a home is a tough and complicated job. You need to find a builder/general contractor you like and has a good reputation and let them do their job. It may seem like it costs more to do it this way. But I believe you actually will spend way more than you expect if you try to manage it yourself, due to mistakes and things that need to be redone and delays. Not to mention the amount of time you need to be available to manage the job and frustrations. I am still confused about the financing. If you own the land outright, great, you do not have to pay for it. But if you pay for the home build instead of financing, you need to come up with the entire cost of the build. And do not forget to leave $ for landscaping, furniture, increase in property tax once the house is built, living costs while it is being built especially if it takes longer than expected, moving costs. As far as the design, work on it until it is just right for you. Owning the land is a great headstart. Congratulations on the opportunity to build your dream home! I do look forward to hearing more along the way if you are willing to post updates. Lafdr

That salad sounds like my kind of salad, but I know some people just don't like anything but a more traditional kind. I find some just don't like fruit and nuts and such in their salads, and blue cheese can be strong if you are not a fan. I would suggest a more traditional garden type salad. No fruits, no nuts, no strong cheese and no fruity or specialty dressings. I would actually not dress the salad and offer a couple different dressings to choose from... probably Ranch and an Italian or Thousand Island. For the salad, I would do simple greens (nothing too exotic), maybe some green onion, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, and croutons.. if you want to be daring add a hard boiled egg or two and some bacon or a cucumber. Keep it simple; sounds like they are not exotic salad lovers. It is nice of them to eat it without complaint. I can usually tell what people don't like by how much of it is eaten or if people go back for seconds. My SIL came right out and told me she doesn't like fruit (or fruity dressings) in her salad. I'm glad to know although it doesn't keep me from making salads with fruits. Although salad is my favorite food, I actually think most Thanksgiving meals don't really need a green salad. I find it's often passed over on Thanksgiving with all the other foods. Are you serving other green veggies, cranberry sauce? You can count the cranberries as a fruit salad and as long as you have at least one green veggie and filling meal you should be covered.

SS would look just fine with your other appliances. People routinely do colored appliances and a SS range. You're compromising a great deal of cooking ability to go with the GE compared to the Capital. Think clearly about that. Long term, I'm sure you'll be much happier with the Capital. You CAN stop the template from being cut to get what you want. And I guarantee I'll beat you in the "this has dragged on long enough" race. Guarantee.

Our kitchen is not done yet but I went to someone's house who had the 1200 abakka and a similar setup. Our hood is 8 ft from the roof as well. We have a 1600 cfm unit connected to a 57" modernaire. After talking to abakka and modernaire, we had the HVAC guy offset the blower so that we could do the quiet kit. The issue was that we have an old not very insulated house and we do have some hearing problems in the family as well (older people losing hearing). I am hoping this works well. I am mentioning this as it took some effort over couple of weeks to educate myself and talk to abakka, talk to modernaire, talk to GC who talked to the HVAC guy etc. If you have not already, please post in the appliances forum where the hardcore, super knowledgeable ventilation guys hang out. You should get some good advice there.

i have a 36 inch range with a 1200 blower mounted on the roof, and at times think i could have used the 900 instead. my hood is 40 inches. Just curious as to why 1400 cfm for a 30 inch stove? being directly above you are bound to hear noise.
i use my hood on the lowest setting usually and it does a great job.

It will need to be mounted at 7' so higher than normal - and variable speed so the hope would be that we could just have it turned down a bit

Having overkill cfm capacity with variable fan speed is the best way with residential targeted fans to get sufficient air flow rate along with lowered noise, particularly if a muffler/silencer cannot be fitted. And when the need arises to burn a pan of bacon, the excess capacity will no longer be excess. However, higher air flow capacity will drive up the cost of make-up air capacity.

The larger hood aperture is just what is needed to compensate for higher mounting to obtain good capture, and along with the larger aperture area must go larger cfm to keep the velocity of the air at the hood aperture as high as it needs to be for containment. Compensation for height with size and flow rate will be fine in ideal circumstances, but if there are cross drafts the capture may be reduced from that obtained with a lower hood.

I don't know what is in Abakka's quiet kit, but am unaware of any acoustic property that depends on horizontal vs. vertical mounting. I do not believe that Fantech's silencers care about orientation, although hanging them can be more difficult if near vertical.
