Recommend detergent for itching?

I have tried everything to determine what is causing itching and would like to eliminate the detergent. I currently use Tide. Do you have any suggestions?

Which "free and clear" types of detergents have you already tried?

Also...try looking for an "enzyme free" version along with perfume free and dye free.

LMAO Sparky: I did doubt myself but only because son loves this jacket lol. His last words before going to bed was * Mom can you please wash this jacket, no one else on this planet can do what you do and I would never trust myself or anyone else but you** sooo That high praise made me jittery.lol. I did end up putting it to soak in warm water with the Sears duel enzyme detergent, no oxygen bleach in this. I got behind this morning and haven't touched the laundry yet except to turn the washer to drain; next step I will wash it on warm with Ariel Color and Style, actually I think I will use the soak/ prewash cycle before I do a final wash just to insure i've got most of the soils out before the main wash. I think it will end up looking nice, its really just dust from hanging in my shed for so long, I'm surprised I didn't find stink bugs in the sleeves lol. Thank you all for your good advice, I appricate it. I'll post a pic when its done.

Good advice everyone. The heavy shedding on the Beagle is a disappointment and picking up on scents, I do live in the woods but my back yard is enclosed with a 7 foot high fence. But the wildlife still gets in ..So I just don't know...I've thought about stopping at the shelter and telling them what I'm looking for..so maybe I'll do that. I'm not rushing into anything, this is something that will take careful consideration. it also does not need to be a purebred dog...a heinz 57 needs a home also...my requirements are low shedding..no bigger than medium sized...it must be a puppy...my kids will love a dog reguardless if its a show dog or a mutt. And it needs to be healthy and hardy. I'm taking my time..the boys know this isn't happening this week..and it could take months...they understand. I just don't dare take them to the shelter with me..or they will want whatevers there lol.

"it does not spin between the wash and rinse." I think it is probably another Energy Star "idea" to conserve more water in the disguise of a traditional looking top loader. I vaguely recall a mention or two on one of the FLer threads that some of the newest models are attaining that highest energy/water conservation level by eliminating interim spins between washes and rinses on additional cycles (other than delicate & hand wash)--ones that are traditionally thought to be more "regular" such as normal, heavy duty, .... I think Towels cycles may be one of the few that has not been messed with traditional rinse & spin sequences inn cycles. It's getting to the point I want to see all this insane conservation stuff abolished. The usual unsuspecting people who just throw the wash in and come back when its finish with their new washer and they begin itching due to poorly rinsed fabrics. and unfortunately the machine is going to be blamed and perceived as a piece of junk. Or they figure out what the issue is and begin doing multiple added rinses or simply starts a quick wash at the end of the previous cycle to get better rinsing. Kind of akin to when phosphates were removed from dishwasher detergents and cleaning results tanked and people were blaming the machine and replacing with new models that still yielded poor results. (And my next oldest sister was one of those with the dishwasher ""issue". She put up with it for almost a year and then commented to me her "problem". I told her about the reformulated detergents. Her solution, she began washing all her dishes and stuff by hand. So much for water conservation.

@MiMi, I'm not sure which Persil but I read it in other threads, and there were suggestions that the vomit smell occurred when people used chlorine bleach with their wash. ======= I used the Persil ProClean liquid this weekend on 3 loads of laundry (2 hot, 1 warm) on normal cycle with extra rinse. 2 Tablespoons left a scent after washing and drying - not as bad as I feared but still perfumery, not vomit. Hopefully the smell dissipates quickly. Regarding cleaning performance, I don't see an improvement over Tide. Maybe I overloaded the wash (4.0 cu ft, 8 kg/17.6 lb capacity)? - queen duvet cover, 2 queen sheets (fitted & flat), mattress protector, 4 pillow cases

Another culprit might be optical brighteners. These chemical residues are intentionally left behind on fabric even after multiple rinses. (Note that "free and clear" refers to absence of dye and fragrance only, and the formulation can still contain optical brighteners.)

Some detergents without optical brighteners are Woolite, Dreft, All free & clear, Bi-O-Kleen, Ecos, Ecover, Seventh Generation, Country Save, Cheer powder. There are more, but I can't remember them all.

Ulra Purex has a Free and Clear and another product that I use, Natural Elements. NE only uses natural ingredients and is hypo allergenic. I've not tried the Free and Clear, but the Natural Elements is reasonably priced. You can check both out at the link below. Just click on products to the left to find the info on Free and Clear.

Vaska might be an alternative as well. It is enzyme free and very gentle, but can suds up a lot in a FL with a heater so be careful how much you use.

We also itch with many detergents but do well with Tide Free & Clear.

I never use fabric softeners or any added scented items to the laundry, if you're using those I'd stop and see if that makes the difference.

One other thing though--is it only recently since the grass/tree pollens have started? If you have bad allergies, it is not advisable to air dry your laundry as pollens are attracted to fabrics. Just a thought...

The regular All F&C might not have brighteners, but my bottle of All F&C - Small & Might 3X lists brighteners on the label. One has to read all the labels. Having so many different versions of a similar detergent doesn't make it easy for us consumers, either.

Tide is very difficult to rinse out. The he seems worse than the regular. I would try an unscented, optical brightner free detergent with extra rinses and see if that helps. Green works has an unscented version that works well but can be sudsy if used at full dosage. Enzymes can cause irritation as well for some people. Extra rinsing and no fabric softner alone may do it.

I had many skin issues (rash, hives, itch, swelling, redness) that turned out to be caused by detergents and softeners ( I used Tide and All for many years with downy fabric softener). Now I only use Bi-o-kleen as my detergent and use vinegar in both the wash and rinse cycles, and an extra rinse at the end of washing also helps. You could skip the vinegar all together and just do the extra rinse since biokleen does rinse quite clear. I do not suffer from any skin irritation with my new method.

Charlie's Soap Laundry Detergent is another option. DH had huge problems with the Tide and itching. For a long time I used Dreft for his clothes--I can only imagine what his work buddies thought of his uniform smelling like baby clothes! Dreft worked fine, but it was very expensive. Heard about Charlie's on GW and gave it a try. I can get 80 loads worth of detergent for $9.99-$13.99 depending on the store and it works great, rinses clean & no fabric softener or vinegar needed.

I have the same problem with a lot of detergents. I started using Purex Baby Detergent which is cheap. It cleans very well and is hypoallergenic too. Love the smell which is not overpowering. No more itching!

@dualref - Oh gah! Yet another detergent I'll have to buy and try. LOL

Maybe the scent in this one won't make me itch, give me a headache, or DH a rash. ;-)
