Maytag Centennial HE Top Load Washer MVWC400XW

I am interested to learn more about this washer. It has a wash plate instead of the usual agitator and uses very little water.

How effective is the rinse(s)?

What is the incidence of repairs?

What is the overall satisfaction among users?

Where can I found out how each cycle is supposed work? i.e. wash length? cycle time? spray rinse or deep rinse?

Go to Maytags website and they are good about having the owners manual on there for there washers and dryers. It should explain most of what you are looking for. Also, you can google the washers model number, and find out owner reviews on it.

There are also videos on YouTube showing how the HE impeller system washes. Search for Maytag Bravos or Whirlpool Cabrio (same mechanism).

Well, LG has actually updated the suspension on their newest top loaders. They support brakets are metal and four additional shock absorbers were added to the tub. Not trying to make you buy an LG but "just sayin'". I posted a picture of the new sytem here - reply number three. http://www.automaticwasher.org/cgi-bin/TD/TD-VIEWTHREAD.cgi?50290 Samsung will be releasing new top loaders with a didicated Waterproof cycle. But I don't know when they will hit the market. These units were just shown at CES a couple of days ago. Between the Whirlpool vs Maytag - Eco Boost vs. Water Save Spray Rinse - Drum Light button vs. not available - nothing vs. Power Wash cycle - Perm Press/Casual vs. not available (maybe the Towels/Colors cycle) - Towels cycle vs. Towels/Colors cycle - two-digit display vs. four-digit display That's about what I can see from looking at the control panel. The Maytag also comes with a longer warranty on the motor and tub (although most washers with this type of motor have the same warranty these days, so it's nothing exceptional in my opinion...). The Whirlpool has the same motor, by the way. Between the two, I'd probably... go... for... the Maytag. Alex

I'd go with the Kenmore, but upgrade to built-in heater. We just bought one to replace our old LG front loader, which died a horrible "tub seal death" but which had performed admirably for 7+ years. We loved that washer, and I really felt it would be difficult at best to replace it. It was a champ, washing delicates and dog beds, sanitizing stuff in our household when we had 2 cancer patients in residence, cleaning things that had to be hand washed. It did all of this well -- and significantly reduced our water and utility bills. The only time we had "mold issues" was when I used Costco detergent. Enter the kenmore 29272. I'm in love. The only downside I've found to this washer, for me (a short person) is that it can sometimes be difficult to get that stray sock that ends up at the far side of the tub. But for our needs, this washer is just about perfect, or as close as we were going to get with current options. It doesn't vibrate our house, it can handle GIANT loads of towels, clothes, dog beds, rugs...and it's done really well with hand wash delicates as well. It's quiet and mostly very intuitive. I'd highly recommend you consider upgrading your choices to this one. We found ours on sale at Sears (see my earlier posts) for not much more than the link you provided lists for the Kenmore without the heater. And they threw in free delivery. You'll notice, too, that the upgraded Kenmore gets much better reviews than the one without the heater. Here is a link that might be useful: Kenmore with built in heater

Thanks. Dianne47, that is exactly what happens if I turn it off...the water drains away. It will only allow about 5 min from pause to cut off if you don't start it back up. So much for a soak. whirlpool, there is a light that comes on the control panel that indicates a cleaning is due. It can be reset by pressing cancel. The manual says if you cancel the cleaning cycle, you need to rinse out the detergent and softener dispensers by running a rinse and spin cycle with an empty machine. I am not sure what would happen if I ignore the clean warning too long. Probably smells would develop over time, so I just wonder if anyone has used only bleach as a cleaning agent in this cycle. Although they do a great job cleaning GE top loaders just aren't durable anymore. I had a Hydrowave that came with the house and also worked on one owned by a friend. I would also stay away from the Thailand made Frigidaire top loaders. I don't think WP/Maytag's design is as durable as it used to be either, but I have several at rental properties and they are so cheap to buy and easy to fix if they break. I know you probably don't like the idea of buying Whirlpool/Maytag again, but I think they have the best conventional top load design on the market today in their price range, with Speed Queen being the best overall (but costing as much as a lower end front loader). Speed Queen will be tougher to find - you won't see it at the big box stores. They only sell through independent appliance shops so if you don't have a dealer near you you'd need to buy it online. I believe that covers all the conventional top loaders on the market today! There are only 4 left - pretty sad, right?

The washer you speak of is basically a low end Cabrio, with out the detergent and fabric softener dispensors, electronic controls. It has a deep clean switch, which is nothing more than a longer wash cycle, and more agatation, which on cabrio's in known as the power wash cycle. The spray rinses are uses on most cycles unless you choice the fabric softerner option which then will over ride the spray rinse, and let the washer fill with water to add the fabric softener, which you will either have to do manually, or use a downy ball as per the owners manual instructions. Reliability should be about the same as a cabrio. You cannot modify your spin speeds and you can in a cabrio, yours are preset.

Thanks for the info. gates1. Do you happen to know what the agitation time is for each cycle and how much time the deep clean option adds to the cycle.

Sorry Davidm69, it was not stated in the owners manual, but my guess will be cycle times are between 30-60 minutes since you do not have a internal heater in this machine. They take longer to wash, because there is no agitater in the washer, just the wash plate.

You can also go to YouTube and type in whirlpoolcorpcare. They have some demo videos of how their washers work - load sensing, agitation etc.

I have the Bravos and the length of the cycle varies according to the cycle chosen. Here are the times of the cycles on my machine. Whites 1 hr.16 min, bulky 57 min, sheets 1 hr.04 min, normal 42 min, heavy duty 48 min, colors/towels 50 min , and hand wash 45 min. an extra rinse adds anywhere from 10 to 15 min longer. I am very pleased with the cleaning of my machine. I also love the fact that bulky items like throw rugs, blankets, etc don't throw it out of balance so it dances across the floor. :)
Sorry I can't describe how or what it does during the cycle. I just set it and let it go. I hear a beep when it is done and go get my clean clothes. I can tell you it kinda sounds like a jet plane taking off when it starts up.You know that sound as a plane accelerates down the runway. Not annoying, just interesting the way it sounds.
Had mine about a year now and no complaints at all, except the lack of a long soak cycle.

Have you considered the WP WTW58ESVW, 4.0? I'm going to go see if I can find this locally today. I looked at the Centennial, but I really hate being limited to HE only soap machine.
