Anyone ever hear of HP sauce?

I was talking with a British gaming friend today and he mentioned this stuff.

Apparently it's a brown sauce, made from fruit and spices and the like, and is very popular in Britain.

HP supposedly stands for Houses of Parliament.

It sounds interesting. Anyone know where I can get it in the states?

I think I've seen it on the shelves at Kroger in Houston. I've never tried it though. I assumed it would be similar to A-1.

I have some sold as "reds" but like Sogo Grape "Fireball" they still have more 'grape' then 'fire'. I purchased some Norton community pots: Sogo John "YN" x Leucadia Lava Flow "Leucadia" Kiss me Kate 'Carol' x H.P. Norton 'Ruby Red' Krull's Red Hot 'Sizzle'x H.P. Norton'Orchidview" All bred for RED Some may bloom for me later this year (as they are getting the size). Hope springs eternal. also have another community pot from Peter Lin Sogo Vivien x Javanica same hope. Really curious on this one as the 3 small plants were $48.

tomplum, I looked at it more closely tonight, including opening the electrical box. Seeing where the wires go is somewhat reassuring, I think I can label them sufficiently, if they have to come off. For now, they're all still connected, from the stator to the Rear Bearing Carrier, and then into the electrical box. I had enough slack to simply move the Bearing Carrier to the side, for now. However, I would welcome any tips on how to remove the rotor. I removed the long bolt, it came off easily. I had read something on another forum (http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r18965592-Portable-generator-disassembly-help-needed) where the person took his (different) genset to a shop. They threaded a longer bolt down through the rotor, into the crankshaft (so there was still "extra" bolt sticking out of the rotor). They then suspended it by the rotor, with the engine hanging down, and hit the bolt with a hammer, which succeeded in popping the engine off of the rotor. I tried something like that (the long bolts that hold the generator closed are the same thread, but a few inches longer), without success, so far. However, I can't hang it with the engine hanging below the rotor :) I still have the engine bolted down in the frame, but it's bolted onto the rubber mounts, so it could still briefly move away from the generator, if it wanted to. The generator is being supported from below by my car jack. I was leery of actually unbolting the engine, since the engine & generator could then slide out of the frame and fall on the floor. The stator is still installed. Any thoughts on how to loosen this would be quite welcome :) Thank you!

I've posted before that I once asked DH to pick up some heavy cream at the grocery, and he came home with a container of Cool Whip. I don't know how I was supposed to make a sauce out of that. One of the absolute weirdest experiences I ever had at a grocery store was when a woman, riding one of those mobility scooters, asked me to help her find a jar of cloves out of a wall of spices. Asked her, did she want the ground cloves or whole cloves. She looked puzzled and said, "I'm not sure". So trying to help I said, "well, what will you be using them in?" She looked embarrassed and said, "My neighbor told me to put them in my pooter." I was just about to say, "I beg your pardon" because I thought I heard her wrong. It took me a few very long seconds to realize that she had been instructed to use them as a suppository. I handed her the whole cloves and excused myself to continue shopping. I'm not sure whether her neighbor was having some fun at her expense, but I didn't want to hear any more of the story.

We cooked a turkey and dressing and bought some sides and pies one year. It was okay, but the cranberry apple pie I was looking forward to was especially disappointing. It hardly had any filling -- like they had to squeak out one last pie and had no more apples. After that, the year my parents had both recently passed, I was not up to hosting (the cooking was not the issue -- it was that I did all the work and didn't get to enjoy it -- and I was already tired), so I made a reservation. No reheating, overcooking or subpar desserts -- everyone got what they wanted and I didn't have to cook and clean for days and then clean up after. We went to a Brazilian steak house and there was turkey as well as beef, pork, lamb, chicken, sausage, a huge salad bar and other sides. It also avoided some other family issues, so while I love the traditional turkey dinner, the aromas in the house and may cook that meal for us over the weekend, if I can't or don't want to cook and clean for everyone -- I'll make a reservation.

That's what I thought, but my friend says no way, it's not even close to A-1.

There is a bottle in my refrig, next to the A1 the Heinz 57, The Lea and Perrins and the Ass Kickin' steak sauce and Malinda's hot sauce etc.
It is similar to AI but a little sharper....sourer.
I like A1 better.

My dad loved HP sauce so I grew up with it in our house and it's almost as popular with the British as ketchup is in North America. Certainly it's often a part of an English breakfast or with meat pies and is seen here in shops that sell British products.

I like it as a side sauce for dipping some cold meats but haven't bought it in ages.

Actually I think HP sauce is better than A1.

I have a bottle in the fridge. The only thing I use it for though is my Seafood/Remoulade Sauce.

It is available here in most grocery stores.

OK, well, this is a major metropolitan area, I'll have to see if the local stores carry it.

I would imagine that they do, it's certainly available here in Los Angeles. I've never bought it. DH loves Lea & Perrins and likes A1. I'll give it a try!

HP is the consistency and maybe colour of AI but tastes totally different in my opinion! It's not at all like Lea and Perrin which is much thinner. I think of it as a steak sauce but my Nana used it in soups and stews as well.

Kframe if you can't find it I'll mail you some!

PS And it does stand for House of Parliament.

I used to work at a British restaurant/pub here in the states and it was on all our tables, right next to the malt vinegar. Americans wanted ketchup, but Brits insisted on their malt vinegar and HP. It's got a flavor all its own. It's Heinz 57's cousin... but they're distant cousins.

It's mainly eaten with a cooked breakfast. There are two sorts of Brits. Those that eat HP sauce, and those that prefer ketchup! My sister is an HP girl and I'm for ketchup!

Gosh, I hope it's better than Daddies Sauce. The Bf is from London and loves that over HP. He smothers cooked breakfasts with in.
