does Self Rising Flour .. Rise ?

Got some Chef Boyardee diy pizza mixes. Simple, add warm water to packet of flour, mix with fork.. make doe ball, coat lightly with oil. Cover let sit for 5 to 10 minutes.. it grows !!!

I put it in what I call brownie pans & put the sauce on top. Bake it... nice thick pan pizza's. Pretty good stuff!! for an easy meal.

Anyhow I ordered some self rising flour.. 6 x 2 pound packages. No real directions on them. Pre Sifted EzBake self rising flour. enriched.

I follow same procedure .. it doesn't rise, just sits there.. end result is a very chewy pizza crust..

Trying/keeping it simple for now to learn .. Ragu garlic/onion sauce with velveeda spicy melted after its done & magic crushed peppers. Tasty, but very chewy.

How do I use this self rising flour stuff.... in a simple way for an oven baked bread like, thick Sicilian type pizza crust ?

It would be fine in moderation. Think about it, the bread that is made from it would be ok in a worm bin, yes? I wouldn't dump it in all at once, but a light dusting every couple days should be ok.

I'm in Knoxville TN. Re: Whole families and screaming kids. I find it depends on which Walmart you're shopping. I think there are 4 in our immediate area and I have only been in 2 of them. Believe me they are light years apart in their clientele. Our local Food Lines all closed except in outlying areas and the Food City I mentioned bought out Winn-Dixie and Bi-Lo. We do still have Kroger and Ingles. I would love to have Publix or Harris-Teeter although I think they're more expensive. I have seen some Lowe's in western NC and they seem pretty nice. I have a tendency to judge them by their range of baked goods in their bakery. Our stores are pretty pathetic in that area unless you go to Fresh Market. Have you guessed that bread is my biggest weakness? I'm intrigued with your quick breads made with self-rising flour. That's something I may try. Do you make muffins for your Farmer's markets? There's a roasted banana muffin that is very good. I have made it 3 or 4 times and we like it a lot. Anyhow, thanks again. jude

I use s-r flour all the time in baking for the market and the last two weeks baking tea breads for gifts. Self-rising flour has baking powder and salt in it. The formula is for each cup of regular flour, mix in 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Many brands of s-r flour are available here in the south: Martha White, Red Band, White Lily (the fraud!), North State Mills, etc. so I buy mine in 5# bags and try to use it up fairly quickly. Sorry, I took it off, because it really didn’t answer the OP’s question, which was where to buy a certain brand. Cornbread 1 cup self rising cornmeal mix 1 cup buttermilk 1 egg 2 tablespoons oil or bacon drippings Turn on oven to 425* and place small cast iron skillet oiled with 1 to 2 tablespoons oil or bacon drippings. Mix above ingredients and pour into hot skillet after oven reaches 425*. Bake until done, about 25 to 30 minutes, I think. Top will be light brown. You can check with a toothpick. Turn out onto plate. This can be doubled, just use a medium skillet. Be sure to use the self rising MIX. It contains flour. I have White Lilly right now. I seem to buy different brands. I just use oil most of the time. Buttermilk does help. ETA: If you want to use plain cornmeal, add 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, and 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 cup plain flour.

The "riser" in self rising flour needs moisture and heat to make it rise....
The Chef boyardee stuff contains yeast, which needs water, flour and perhaps a bit of sugar to rise....and the heat stops the rise.
Try mixing 2 cups of flour, you can use the self rising stuff if you have it, one envelope of yeast ( buy it where the flour is sold), 3/4 tsp of salt, 2 tsps of sugar and enough warm ( NOT HOT!!) water to make your "doe" ball....and then coat with oil etc etc.

Self-rising flour is pre-mixed with the leavener (baking powder) and salt. It's common in the South, Australia and the UK and is used here for things like biscuits and quick breads (think banana bread).

Self-rising flour works in these recipes when they're mixed up and heat is applied. In other words, unlike a yeast-based recipe, nothing much happens until it's in the oven.

It's not "authentic" pizza dough, and the flour is a bit softer, but there are quick handy recipes for pizza crust that do call for self-rising flour.

I used to have a recipe for a copycat of Pizza Hut's pan pizza. Seems to me it was basically club soda and self rising flour. I played with it adding seasonings to the flour and eventually substituted beer for the club soda. (Who keeps club soda around? But there's ALWAYS beer.) I wonder where I put the recipe. And all I can remember about their sauce recipe was that it had grape jelly in it.

I'm pretty sure Pizza Hut uses a yeast dough.
