First two weeks in June--Savannah and Charleston area--where should I eat and what should I order. Fast food, take out and moderately priced restaurants.

Gullah Cuisine in Mt. Pleasant, SC looks fantastic! Must Eats: Okra Gumbo, Collard Greens, Fried Chicken, All You Can Eat Buffet, Gullah Rice, She-Crab Soup, Ice Tea, Cornbread Muffin, Fried Shrimp, Fried Oysters

Oh boy, Teresa, do I agree. I got boiled peanuts once at a farmer's market kind of place in Florida, they were awful!

I figured it was probably just because I shouldn't eat something cooked at a farm market, LOL, so I ordered them again, in a restaurant in Georgia.

They were still awful...

No suggestions on restaurants in that area, but don't eat the boiled peanuts.

I think if wok cooking is priority, then open burner is a must. This is from personal experience. Do a search on "edge heating" or "perimeter heating" and you will probably find some discussions about this. I didn't mention Capital because, at least for now, there is not a Culinarian (i.e. open burner) drop-in cooktop yet. Once there is, my vote would move to that based on my experience with my CC range. Restaurant wok cookers/ranges are all north of 100k BTU some of the larger ones are around 200k BTU. Plus they use gas jets to focus the heat into a 3-5 inch diameter. It's pretty typical to get the bottom of the wok red hot while pre-heating... and yes, these high btu burners can get really dangerous in inexperienced hands. I have a 135k btu outdoor portable propane burner from outdoorstirfry which can outcook both the CC and BS.

There are some pots/pans designed specifically for gas burners. Turbo Pots I wouldn't want to have to clean them though. This design increases the efficiency of a gas burner. I have doufeu from the 40s that has ridges on the bottom for the same reason. It was also made with a flat bottom for electric stoves. If you have some pans you like keep them unless/until you find something better. skillets/frying pans- There are two considerations for me. If I need high heat, I use cast iron. It conducts heat poorly and is prone to hot spots but it also holds a lot of heat. Great for searing steaks and stir fries. Your choice is machined smooth surface vs sand cast surface of newer ones like Lodge. It will become nonstick with use but requires a little care. The smooth surface seasons a little quicker in my experience. I like the short handles and the ability to use it in the oven as well. Some of the vintage pieces seem a little lighter to me. My favorite is a Piqua "favorite" in 12 inch that I got at a roadside sale. I also fry chicken in it and cook bacon and eggs. Great for cornbread when preheated in the oven. When I need a very even heat, I like something in a heavy aluminum. I have a couple of commercial 14 inch non stick cast aluminum pans my son got somewhere but my favorite pan is Calphalon anodized aluminum pan with two loop handles. It is called a braiser and is 13 inches across I think. It pops in the oven too. It seasons to become nonstick as well although it requires a little more patience than cast iron.. My favorite saucepans I have a couple of wide 2 qt old Revere Ware pans that I use all the time. These have the full amount of copper on the bottoms. In the 60s the copper was cut in half and the new ones are just flashed with copper. I also have a 4 qt like this. The handles are comfortable and don't get hot. I have used these for candy making. which requires even heat. Last year I also bought some Baumalu copper from TJX stores for about 15 cents on the dollar. One of my best buys ever from those stores. They have cast iron handles that don't heat up as quickly and are 2mm which is the minimum thickness for cookware. A couple are the splayed sauce pans. 3mm would be better but also heavier. They are tin lined. dutch oven/soup pot - I have a 6 and 8 qt all clad that I have had for years and years. They have never warped and I could not be without them. I also have an 8qt Revere Ware pot with a bail handle and helper handle. One thing I don't use since I have my Wolf range is a double boiler. The burners go so low, you don't need it. Some other random cookware I like- AC 16 qt stockpot great big Le Creuset blue enamel pot, maybe 7 qts but a little wider than most a set of 3 light blue white speckled enameled cast iron skillets, mostly used for casseroles but you can start on the burner and move to the oven big cast aluminum roaster, like magnalite but made by "Forever" I am a cookware junky and have many other pieces that get used too. The only pans I have now that I am not enamored with are my Debuyer carbon steel skillets. They have seasoned nicely and cook ok but the handles are just too long. None of mine goes in the dishwasher. Even the AC is the LTD so a dishwasher will ruin the finish. My sister does put everything in the dishwasher but she doesn't care if finishes are ruined or oxidized. We are both happy so that is all that matters. I have had a couple of larger pans warp so they were rounded on the bottom. I wacked them with a rubber mallet a few times and they popped probably the other way but it isn't noticeable. They seem flat now from the cooking surface perspective. I had a pan one time that was higher in the middle and it was actually good for some things- fat cooked off and drained away. I'm not really looking for that anymore though!

I wanted to share my latest range news. Sears approved a complete refund of my GEPBG975 and I bought an electrolux wavecontrol free standing range.(I wish I didn't have to have freestanding..but not enough money to gut my kitchen.) The switchover was today. I had to wait an extra 2 weeks as Sears had to order it. So far it looks like it has all the features of GE, but a few more bells and whistles, including more programing possibilities and very nice smooth sliding racks and a broiler pan and extra rack to be used with the pan for convection roasting. I like the rapid preheat and the instruction book is terrific and not made of newsprint.Also comes with a sturdy "quicklist" that is nice to put near the range while I'm learning the controls. I spoke to Electrolux beforehand...they sent me a cd to give me andvance instructions on how it works. A CD was also included with the range. It seems like a much sturdier and better made appliance than the GE. I like the center burner being an actual medium burner, rather than the oblong style of the Ge. The griddle can be used either as a grill or flat griddle on the left burners. I doubt I'll use that. One of the things I've noticed right away is that there is not that initial startup odor from the burners or the oven when the gas is first turned on. (Like gas logs.)I had that every time with the GE So,initially I give it a favorable report. I'll be doing a lot of cooking in the next few weeks, including making jelly, and will report back. I'm hoping for the best. It is wonderful not to be "shopping" anymore. Oh, the gasket seal seems very tight and the knobs aren't hot, (warm when the stove is on for a while, but that is expected.) HD and I (with 2 children) have been to Savannah several times since we live in GA, it makes for a nice getaway. Be prepared however to fight the crowds, gnats and other flying varmints too! Also, don't forget the meat tenderizer if going to Ty Bee especially....our last vacation there ended after HD was stung by a stingray. We didn't see it and he thought maybe he had just scrapped his leg on something under the water..but after 2 days of pain, swelling in redness...we began a long trip home to North Georgia. He was in terrible pain, nauseated etc. It wasn't until several days later that I finally convinced him he needed medical attention. The MD was quite sure after hearing our account of the days leading up to our visit that it was a "vicious" stingray attack and without medical attention could have proven extremely dangerous. He strongly recommended when visiting there again (or another beach for that matter) meat tenderizer applied in a paste like form would give relief from insect bites and other creatures of the deep...look out for the jellyfish too! sorry to bring you down,,,,it's a lovely place...and we have enjoyed many days strolling across the beach early in the morning, but found the night life to be a little overwhelming...just be safe and careful...that River Walk can become quite overwhelming and crowded at night! Just don't venture too too far and expect parking to be an issue.

As to what to eat, I usually get she crab soup at least once and buy some benne wafers to take home too.
Basically fresh seafood with as many meals as possible makes me happy.
From what I have read Paulas Deens brothers (uncles?) restaurant is better than Lady and Sons.
We like Hyman's Seafood restaurant in Charleston.

Downtown Charleston - Magnolia's and Carolina's are wonderful - but pricy. Jestine's Kitchen and Hominy Grill are more moderately priced but are really yummy. Hyman's is also good - honestly, there are so many great restaurants downtown it is hard to name them all.

If you get out to Mt. Pleasant, try out Five Loaves for lunch. I ate there today and had a Mandarin gazpacho with a salad made of arugula, walnuts, asparagus, goat cheese, and roasted beets - along with a sweet basil and honey dressing. Delicious!

I can't help you with Savannah restaurants - I'm a Charleston girl.

And about the boiled peanuts - they are delicious, but apparently they are an acquired taste. I don't know anyone raised here that doesn't love them, but most people from "off" don't like them at all.

We went to Savannah and Charleston for the first time over spring break (end of March) and had a fabulous time. We ate a variety of foods and prices. I don't know if you're driving through North Carolina, but if you are, don't overlook the barbecue stops on your way there.

In Savannah, 700 Drayton was very, very good. A little pricey maybe, but the food was well prepared and the atmosphere was very quiet and elegant. I was keen on going to Mrs. Wilke's for "authentic low country" but the line was long and DH wasn't as keen on it as I. If I were to go back again, I'd make it a stop.

In Carleston, we had a late dinner at Magnolia's at the bar one night. It's pretty crowded, but the food is worth the wait. DH thinks he had the best fried chicken he ever ate there.

Carolina's is wonderful, too, and here's a tip. They have a wonderful happy hour - half-price beer, wine, cocktails and appetizers. Best calamari EVER, in a sweet red chili sauce that I'm still trying to duplicate. We also stopped by a bar across the street from South End Brewery that had a great happy hour.

I really, really like happy hours and they're definitely a great way to stretch a vacation dollar!

Hmmm, happy hours??? Me, 66, alone in a bar???? I am dieting right now so I can ruin it all when I get down there. Fired green tomatoes!!! I'll be two sizes larger when I get home!

Teresa, I'll take your's and Annie's boiled peanuts any day! It is an aquired taste - hated them when I was a kid but somewhere along the way that changed. Nothing like finding a back road shack selling them with an ice cold beer!

Maybe ya'll got ahold of some like Alton Brown was fixing that he boiled only a couple of hours. The good ones take about 9 hours.

p.s. on the boiled peanuts. I've had cold, soggy ones and thought they were horrible. But our county ag agent brings them in from the field, boils them and salts them warm and they're awesome.

I love peanuts, hate boiled peanuts. A friend who likes the boiled ones done some for me one time so they were fresh boiled. Really awful!

If you decide to try them please let us know your thoughts about them.

Yes, the boiled peanuts are definitely an acquired taste....I think your mom had to eat them while you were in the womb! LOL! I'm willing to try just about anything once and I completely respect any person's right to eat and enjoy boiled peanuts 'til the cows come home, but I'll take my peanuts roasted in the shell, thank you very much.

82 Queen is very "Challstun". You could go for lunch to save some money. The outdoor courtyard is fantastic but it will probably be uncomfortable to eat outside during the day. Jestines is a very popular meat and three kind of place. We like Hyman's too.

In Savannah, Kevin Barry's is a neat Irish pub with a lot of atmosphere. I know it isn't low country, but Savannah is a very Irish place so you will be getting a Savannah experience.

I'm going to warn you - it is going to be hot and sticky. I checked your profile and see that you are from Syracuse. I was born and raised in Syracuse and have lived in the South since 1989. If you haven't previously traveled in the South during the summer, you will be astounded by the humidity. Have fun, wear comfy, comfy shoes and try not to let the humidity get to you.

There is a musical theatre in Savannah that is just wonderful if you want to plan to get tickets well in advance of your trip. I don't know what the ticket price is as I was a guest of our hosts in May of last year. But it is worth every penny.

this thread has reminded me of all the great food I've had in Savannah. Unfortunately, I haven't been there in at least 30 years. I was surprized to find several of my favorites still in business:

The Pink House ... we often ate there for lunch and I remember it as a tea room. The on-line menu looks a bit more upscale than I recall...

We just returned yesterday, from a few days in Charleston, celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. Love that area! I always manage to go to Rue de Jean for their mussels and frisee lyonnaise salad....lunch time...it's more affordable than dinner, and a real treat for me.

If you don't mind driving a good bit and like down home cooking...there's a little run-down looking restaurant on Hwy 17 out of Mt. Pleasant going north toward Georgetown, must be about 15 miles or so, on the left, you might like. Good prices, plenty of seafood and a ton of side dishes. Their desserts are homemade; I've seen "mammaw" carrying in homemade cakes on a dome covered plate, numerous times, although I'm never able to eat dessert. DH and I ordered fried shrimp from the seniors menu, I think it was $8.95 and I counted 12 shrimp. One side was included and I ordered cole slaw, extra. Certainly good on the tummy and the budget as well. (Bad on the hips, though)LOL

We also found a new little French Bakery on John St. just a couple of doors from Rue de Jean restaurant. They have only been open 5 weeks, so they said.

Enjoy your vacation! I have to say I'm partial to Charleston but I love Savannah too.
