Afternoon Tea Break

I combined three recipes to make these tarts.

The pastry was an Oatmeal Maple Syrup pastry. The filling from my favourite blueberry pie recipe and for the topping, I used the ``crisp`` from Annie`s Grandmother`s Blueberry Crisp recipe.

Picked up these beautiful little 'teacup/scone plates" at a little Antique Mall that was changing locations. Many items were on sale. Picked these up for half price.

Only one thing wrong with the tea cup/scone plates.......
they are yours and not mine!!

I collect cups and saucers and pretty plates so of course I notice then first.....then the tarts. The tarts also are very tasty looking. beautiful photography,,..presentation is very important says DD. shirl

Everything you write evokes memories. In Sweden the saying to ward off evil is "pepper, pepper, touch wood" so I don't thing the touch wood bit could be Celtic in origin. When I was in India in 67-68, at international work camps, tiffin was the afternoon tea break with some savoury snack. But I think I heard the expression only in Delhi, not in other parts of India. In my childhood home (long ago now!) all meals were served at table in the kitchen and meal times were very strict and all families in the neighbourhood kept the same times. It was very convenient for children, all went in to eat at the same time so there were never any arguments. I lived on the Baltic coast so we had fish at least five times a week when in season, for lunch or dinner. We bought the fish from a fisherman who came round early in the morning, first on his bike with the icebox at the back, later with his car. There was only one main course and dessert, a cooked dessert every day. My mother would sometimes make small amounts of icecream, a rare treat. She made everything from scratch. I don't remember any store bought food or canned food. The first frozen foods in the late 50'ies were peas, spinach and fish filets. My mother never liked to cook although she had to. I started cooking when I was 14, the few things mother would let me cook. The very first thing I did was to cure a large fresh ham when mother was in hospital before Christmas that year. We usually got a cured ham for Christmas but that year father had bought a fresh ham from a farmer and took for granted that I would know how to make the brine.

I have the same situation. Main thing is keep the doorway clear so you can open it up in good weather and when you entertain. In the climate I live in, we only open it up in the late spring and early fall. Otherwise the heat or air conditioning would not allow it, money would be escaping out the doorways with the heat or cool. In the winter, I decorate out there so I have something to view out the sliding glass doors. In summer we just hang out there. I consider the two rooms extensions of each other. I have a sitting area on the porch outside of the dining room. Also, as far as making the dining room multi functional . . . need to know your main purpose as far as the function. We actually flipped our dining room with the eating area off the family room, so that we eat most of our meals in the dining room and the eating area off the family room has transformed into a work area. Both areas are open to the kitchen, so it was just easier to use the family room area as a work space since it is adjacent to our home office and the back door which accesses storage in the garage too. Frankly I think it is nice to have one area just for dining, and a separate dining room makes meal times peaceful. But we could have easily turned the dining room into a work space, or if we had kids, a playroom. But we have a separate office room with a door on it. If I had kids, I would have made the space that could be closed with a door into the playroom and made the dining room a home library/office with only minimal dining space in there. In that case, since the dining room opens to the outdoors, it would have been a great spot for a little adult bistro table for morning coffee or afternoon tea break, or evening cocktail. Figure out your most desired functions and where to put them. You don't have to be super traditional, you can think outside the box as long as it flows and suits your lifestyle. Your home should suit your lifestyle, don't try to fit your lifestyle to your home, it should be the other way around.

I drink coffee during the day and tea time is right after dinner, after the dishes are done. Before our cat died in August he would share tea time with me. He would sit in the middle of the family room floor and wait for me to finish the dishes. When I put the kettle on to boil he would move a little closer and watch. I would get out my 2 cookies (Peek Freans Lifestyle Cranberry Crunch) make my tea (Sleepytime Vanilla) and go and sit in "our" big comfy chair. He would wait for me to open my book, climb on my lap and we would have teatime and reading time together. I miss our time.

They look so good. I could eat one right now with a good cup of tea. Those teacup/scone plates are so pretty. That was a good find.

Lovely cups, AnnT, and lovely tarts too. You did make a good find with those cups and plates. I could see you using those for a lot of things.

I'd love the recipe for the maple oatmeal pastry, when you have a minute and if you don't mind.

You know, I think Grandma would be tickled to know that she's found some degree of notoriety with her recipes.

Like Mitch, I had no idea that this type of plate existed, and I do love them. I also love the glass teapot - where did you find that? I use my teapot every day and should probably have another one.

Are there more to the set or do you have just the rose cup and saucer/plate and the orchid cup and saucer/plate. I was wondering what other flowers the other cups might have on them. I especially like the orchid set .

P.S. I used to have tea parties on a regular basis when I first went to university, and I served tea from a Bavarian porcelain teapot with matching tea cups. I also had sugar cubes and sterling silver tongs for the sugar cubes. Anyone who picked up sugar cubes with his fingers did not get invited back! I had to buy little cakes at a deli, since of course I could not cook in my room, but did have an electric kettle for the tea.

They look great. I like the teapot too, and the china. Probably wouldn't look as good on my fine Chinet and foam cups. But still should taste greaaaaaaat!

Lovely and delicious! I collect cups and saucers and they were the first things I saw too; would have loved to see the back stamps. But then I'm snoopy.
