Mid life career change

It is a scary thing to change careers in mid stream. I have been in the construction field for all of my working life. With the economy the way it is, work is very, very slow in all related fields. Recently I ran into an old high school friend who works for a large auto insurance company. He told me how they are hiring auto adjusters and mentioned some of the perks. It sounds like a great opportunity. I have some mechanical background since we fixed all of our own cars as I was growing up (Thanks to Dad who felt that his girls should know more than how to change a tire.) so I am not intimidated by that aspect of things.

But I find myself hesitating. IÂve become complacent working in a comfortable office where I know what to expect every day. But the work weeks are getting short and we have been advised that we may only have 3 day work weeks in February. In truth my office really cannot support the staff it has now.

For those who have made a leap into the unknown, how did it work out for you?
