Non-Carrier AC/heat pump with Infinity Furnace?

Hello,

Just checking to see what people think about adding a non-Carrier AC/heat pump unit to an Carrier Infinity Furnace?

I have a year and a half old, zoned infinity system. (I love it.) The AC is finally going... a friendly neighbor in the HVAC business looked things over and said there is a blockage in the system and the compressor is almost shot. Anyway, he was suggesting a "Sure" system (made by Rheem?) I don't mind going with a non-Carrier brand if it will still give me full functionality with the infinity controller/system.

Could work if set up right, but I don't like the idea. You'll lose communicating capability with the outdoor unit (mainly diagnostics), and (post model number to confirm) sounds like you're going to a single-stage outdoor unit rather than a 2-stage outdoor unit. 2-stage units are beneficial in zoned applications. You'd have to wire up the outdoor unit with a conventional 24v setup rather than the communicating 4-wire interface. You probably want a second opinion here. Not sure what he's saying about a "blockage" causing the compressor to almost be "shot." Why do you feel that the A/C is going? Not cooling as well? I think you need a qualified Carrier dealer to look at the system and give a diagnosis.

If this is a heat pump with an indoor air handler, then you'd end up with a mismatched system (indoor and outdoor coil do not match). With a furnace and a/c setup, the coil is a separate piece of equipment and could be changed out.

1.I would want to see a load calculation in writing for each zone. I question the sizing especially on the furnaces. 2. Keep in mind basements at or even partially below grade have a very low heating and cooling load 3.assuming you have no installation issues with outside venting, I would get a price on Carrier's 58MVC high eff furnace for the main floor/basement zone. 4.as far as heat pumps, you would need an analysis of your electric and at gas rates. 5. If you have humidity issues in the basement, you need to address the issue of why before trying to solve with dehumidifiers. 6. Dealer should address your temperature issue with the master bedroom with insulation check and ductwork size check. I will assume room is the opposite in the winter heating season. Windows are high quality? 7. I always prefer new and correctly sized refrigerant linesets. IMO

On the HPs, ask for upgrade price on the Performance series 25HPA5 sgl stg and 25HPA6 two stage HP condenser. You did not mention the thermostat or controller. It should be the Infinity model. IMO

Zip Code 21234 is a Maryland zip. I am 21009 in Bel Air. FYI: A Carrier 21 SEER is not actually 21 SEER. Don't be fooled by the marketing bullsh%t. You should consider a heat pump w/gas furnace supplimentary heat (dual fuel or hybrid). You say it is not cost effective, but have you run the numbers? What is the delivered price of natural gas per therm? Post the model numbers of the heat pump condenser (or a/c condenser), matching indoor coil, and furnace, and we will provide the true SEER, EER, and HSPF from the American Refrigeration Institute. I agree, With a 2 stage system, there won't be much difference between the 2. I would suggest the NATE dealer if for no other reason than they take the time to be educated and really, the installing dealer makes a big difference in the satisfactory outcome. They will have more resources to fall back on if they run into a question on your job, and they will also generally have a more thorough understanding of the little things about unit start up and such that can make a big difference in the long term performance of the system. This is not to say that the other sources you have mentioned may not be fine. It is just my opinion that dealers who care enough to take continuing classes and training will probably care enough to satisfy you better. As to heatpump vs AC. The advantage of a good heatpump with a low ambient control is that you can run it for heat when the outdoor temperature is around 30 or higher. A good Thermostat will automatically switch your system to furnace from heatpump based on the outdoor temperature. You are insightful enough to realize that is it usually either cool and mild, or really cold where you are. That is why the heatpump is such a good fit.

I would at a minimum, recommend a Carrier Performance HP. If you do install a non-Carrier HP you will need a Carrier NIM (Network Interface Module).
