A quality Heat Pump for a 20 yr old house

I need to replace the heat pump and air handler in my 1984 home. It's about 2400 sf in 2 stories plus a full basement. There are 15 windows and 3 doors. It's dry in winter, so I'm assuming that there is a lot of infiltration. It has a 2 1/2 ton unit on it now.

Are a 2 speed pump and variable speed blower worth the upcharge?

Do you have any recommendations for units that I should consider or avoid?

We frequently use the blower to circulate air when the HP is not on: Is an ECM motor worth the charge?

We're in Virginia, so it gets humid in the summer. How successful would it be to add a fixed de-humidifer in series before the air handler? Is there a price range for an installed de-humidifer?

Thank you for any suggestions or comments that you can offer.

Very respectfully,

Larry
