Boiling Hamburger?

OK, I admit that I have never boiled hamburger meat. I assume you just boil some water and throw in the meat. Is it done when the pink is gone?

Our younger pup is under the weather from surgery and her Vet suggested boiled hamburger meat as one of the low residue items to try when she gets home. I am going to have one heck of a celebration when both these pups are well again.

Just put the burger in a pan, add water almost to cover and cook until the pink is gone...strain. Reserve and freeze the liquid to feed with their kibble or rice when they are better....or add it to soup for yourself. Remove the fat when it's cooked.
Not sure why he said to boil if unless to remove the fat.

I have been boiling hamburger for some time now to cut down on fat. I crumble it sometimes very fine to use later for taco meat. Can leave larger chunks depending on what you use it for. Like Linda C said, water to cover and cook until pink is gone. I freeze it then in portions and boy does it cut down on cooking time for some dishes.
I haven't saved the water but I will now.

Poor puppies. Hope they get better soon. My dh brought home another lab pup so now we have two and this one eats like a horse.

We transferred him to his vet this morning. He looked sicker then yesterday and I am truly worried. No pep in him at all. He hates the car and will not suffer to ride in it without groans and short yaps of protest. But today he laid on the seat with my arms around him and did not say a thing. Lactated Ringer IV, Reglan, and Flagyl at the ER Vet. I was so worried when the receptionist started spouting about the tests needed for pancreatitis. He does NOT have pancreatitis. I gather this from the labs already performed. I tried to stay calm because she does not order the tests or the treatments and will call Dr. Andrews at 3pm. Oven bags in crockpot! Well I finally tried two meals in one crockpot. I put chicken breast in one bag, tied it, and poked one hole near the top. In the other bag I did a simple roast in the same manner. This was in preparation for making chicken sandwiches the next day for lunch and the next day the roast I cut it up and pieces and added powder gravy mix with 2 cups water, can of cream of mush. soup, canned carrots and canned potatoes (in a hurry). Mmm. I loved using the bags and will use them again. Thanks!

Just put it in boiling water. I am sure it doesn't even matter but I was told to bring the water to a boil and then put it in so that is the way I do it. You can season the water if you like, salt, pepper, spices etc.....I have only heard of one person that said her DH didn't like the taste. I can't really tell the difference but then I always use mine with seasonings like for tacos, sloppy joes, enchiladas, or in a casserole. The important difference is in the fat content. Bioling it will take sooooooooo much fat out of it.....Just try it once, you have nothing to use.

My lab would have episodes where she could not keep food down for a day or two, and she would sometimes eat grass like you mentioned your dog doing. I got in the habit of just switching her to certain foods when she had a bad spell. She loved rice, sometimes with peas and carrots in it, and sometimes with boiled hamburger- it depended on how "off" her tummy was. When she got older, I'd make her baked potatoes with butter, which she loved and it generally sat pretty well. It seemed like she'd need 2 or 3 meals of "comfort food" and then she'd be right back to her regular stuff. ETA: I wanted to clarify some info about potatoes before I get flamed here. In regard to feeding dogs baked potatoes, I often microwaved them and fed them to her without the skin. Some people are cautious about potato skins, as some feel they are toxic to dogs and cats. In my research it seems that the problems occur with green skins/eyes, and raw skins and potato, so would definitely avoid those if you ever have an inkling to give your dog a baked potato :) Best of luck. As you stir the ground beef while it is boiling, it becomes very fine in texture which is a good thing for hot dog chili, tacos, or ailing pups.

Thanks for all the info. It is boiled, drained, and cooling. Her rice is cooked and cooling also. Her chicken broth is thawing.

I had always just put ground beef back in FP after I browned it in the iron skillet for taco's and such. Now I know a new way of doing it. Yes, it is because of the fat content that it needs to be boiled. Thanks again.

I much prefer hot dog chili made with boiled hamburger meat rather than browned. It cooks up so much finer.

I sure will try it as it sounds like a great way to precook the meat for chili and tacos...
I love ground chuck because it has a lot of flavor (must be the fat content) and this way I can eliminate some of the fat and make it healthier.

I love doing it...Truthfully I try to keep it in the freezer at all times...makes a quick dinner so easy and so much better for you....A friend of mine suggested to me in my early days of doing it to just nuke it and rinse it for the same outcome but I still prefer boiling. I sometimes add onion or garlic or any other flavor I want to the meat.
