What did you get/give for Mama's day?

I didn't sleep very well last night but I got the best gift of all, a nap this morning! :-) Of course, there's more. I got 18 red roses, a paper tulip that little man made at school, and two cupcake books. No kitchen gadgets :-0 We are going to K. Country with hubby's sister and my in-laws for a Mother's Day lunch. Should be a pretty good day for us.

DD and I did our annual Mother's Day and birthday's combined last weekend. We took a three day shopping trip to Birmingham by ourselves. Since I can't do much in the way of shopping any other way, we rented a wheelchair for her to get me thru the stores. I couldn't have enjoyed anything any more than this and she enjoyed it just as much as I did. We had some wonderful food as well as the shopping.

We went to White Flower Farms on Friday to avoid the MD's rush today. Garden Center expeditions are a MD's tradition. DH is smoking another chicken for today's dinner. Yum! Oh, the kids gave me a gift certificate for iTunes (yeah!).

Hi from St. John, Creativity counts because I am not good at "giving up anything" First, went off island to purchase everything.Had on island quote for Kraftmaid kitchen cabinets. Quoted price of $46,700.00 Eeeeek my budget was $20,000. That one quote started me on my new mission to stay on budget and look for bargains. Went to Expo Design Center on Pine Island Florida. Had a fantastic designer Robert Fabian. I chose and ordered Kraftmaid cabinets for my kitchen and the apt kitchen downstairs only the price was $17,000.00 versus $46,000.00 for my kitchen comparable to what I was quoted here. Sixteen ceiling fans,all plumbing fixtures,all plumbing hardware,all door hardware all GE appliances both kitchens plus outdoor kitchen, except for a Subzero refrigerator and Subzero freezer which I bought at Coral Springs Appliances because Home Expo doesn't carry SZ's.Bamboo flooring for husband's bonus room. 4000 sq.ft of travertine marble for all floors and apt shower @ $2.94 sq.ft. The list was huge but so was the discount by buying everything at one place. The designer gave me a discount plus ordered what I needed the week the store offered a cabinet discount or appliance discount etc.The most miraculous part was everything and I mean everything was exactly what we ordered and in perfect condition. That means alot when you had to ship everything to an island and truck to a site on the side of a hill. The other fantastic savings was for what I couldn't afford to special order.I found the Habitat for Humanity Rehab Stores in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami they are in many cities.I wanted all armoire and drawer built-ins for the bathrooms and bedrooms instead of closets.I found armoire cabinets for $75.00 with raised panel doors.We are building those all in and ordering matching cabinet doors and drawer fronts from Scherr's a cabinet manufacturer recommended on the Kitchen forum.When all is built in everything gets painted with Bin a white pigmented shellac and then with with the appropriate finishing paint.The estimate for our masterbath cabinets was $18,000 from Expo. When all is said and done I think we will end up under $1500.00 with unfinished cabinet doors from Scherr's sweat equity and paint. Another great find was a salvage door store in Ft. Lauderdale recommended by a friend. We bought all of our interior glass french doors bedroom and bathroom doors for $400.00 many of which were brand new. I am making all my own decorative friezes not because I have any talent but what I like by Focal Point I can't afford. I purchased all the acanthus appliques at Constantines on line. I am attaching them to strips of luan and then priming and using brads to secure them to the ceiling trim boards. Crown molding will be attached above as budget permits. Sweat equity is a must to stay on budget. I do all the jobs I can do. I have primed and put two coats of paint on the entire interior and entire exterior surfaces of an all concrete house.We have blue jobs and pink jobs. . A substantial savings was not buying the spiral stairway we wanted from York Spiral Stairs in Maine. It is gorgeous a double helix with wide stringer $10,000.00 plus 6800.00 to ship it here.A poster on this forum showed pictures of their built in spiral stairs, we did that with the help of a local carpenter the labor and materials were 4200.00 complete. I think you have to look at the big picture cutting back items you can't upgrade later makes no financial sense. You can always change hardware lighting appliances etc but it is difficult to add square footage and roof lines that you won't always love.The best of luck.

Stray cats in particular need kitten food before birth of their kittens. Feeding Your Own Pregnant Cat If your cat is already on a diet of quality canned cat food, it should be safe to continue feeding her the same brand she is accustomed to for awhile. However, during the last three to four weeks, she should be switched to a nutritious canned kitten food, and continue on that regimen until after the kittens are weaned. (The kittens will then be fed the same food as mom.) In the final week of her pregnancy, try a supplement of KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement (Compare Prices), which is readily available in most pet supply stores and many supermarkets. The additional calories and higher levels of other key nutrients are just what the mother needs. If your cat suffers from mild food sensitivities and is fed a �delicate� formula food, there are a variety of sensitive and delicate formula kitten foods available. However, if your cat is on a specific diet for health reasons, consult your vet before making any changes. Increase the frequency of the daily meals to three or free-feed her by mid-pregnancy. She may need to eat small meals every 3-4 hours during the last week of the pregnancy, as the kittens continue to take up more room (remember that most fetal growth occurs in the last two weeks of gestation). During the last week of pregnancy and the first 3-4 weeks of lactating, she may eat 1�-2 times the amount she ate before pregnancy. As long as she is gaining a healthy amount and not becoming obese, she should receive the food. This formula can be purchased at almost any credible pet store. As for stray cats, I would recommend to start feeding them kitten food from the start of the pregnancy. The reason for this is if you have adopted a stray cat, she will be most likely malnourished and thin. She needs to regain as much energy as possible to build up her stamina and strength to provide the necessary nutrition for her unborn developing fetuses. Now you�re thinking, what are the risks for my cat during pregnancy? Well the main risk that is developed in the last stages of pregnancy, and during nursing, is a condition called eclampsia. This condition results because of a lack of calcium within the bloodstream. That�s why calcium supplements should be given to your feline friend to avoid this life threatening condition. Also make sure your cat receives quality foods and a constant fresh supply of water to combat fatigue associated with pregnancy and nursing. Thanks for asking! I really want to run this past someone, but I think it will work well. Summerfield posted a few new ideas for my plan, after I showed you the other version. At first, I wasn't sure about the master bedroom in the front. Then, Summerfield posted another version, with the big living room in the back. Between the two, I thought...if the living room and bedroom would work in those spaces...we could have the kitchen/keeping room, on the other side of the house. I've always thought this was the best place for the kitchen/keeping room. It has the best views, the perfect big fireplace (really better than having this in the living room) the size is great...now the baking area can actually be IN the kitchen! And we have a lovely lilac hedge (15' high) on the other side of the proposed porch. So, with Summerfield's help, we came up with this new plan. I really like it, but like all things, it comes with compromises. The mudroom, laundry and utility areas either had to go where I want the porch...or on the other side of the house. Not only did we REALLY want the porch, but the parking will be on the left side of the house. It's about 25' between the kitchen and utility room. There is a small pantry by the fridge, but most long term food storage, paper products and pet supplies will be in the other area. However, we're used to a bit of a trek, so I think it will be fine...and at least we don't have to go to the basement! The claw foot tub will (hopefully) have climbing roses around the bay window, as well as the window seat in the master bedroom. This is the corner (south side) where we plan to have the garden, so it will be much easier to have roses, lavender and other flowers...off the bedroom than my husband's 'rustic' living room. And, the views out the living room will be of the pine trees on the back hill and the horses in their pasture. So...all things considered, what do you think?

We are smack dab in the middle of our kitchen remodel. When my contractor first came out to discuss my plans, he listened politely until I told him I wanted to add a window between uppers and lowers so that I could see out to the E, not just S and SW... He looked at me, waited a minute, and said, "And just why do you think that is so important?" He knows me well, and that comment made me laugh, and really decide just what was important, and what were really pie in the sky ideas. 35 years ago, when we first moved our house to our farm and began improving it, I immediately began dreaming of a major kitchen remodel. I had plans to blow out a wall, take in a porch, and add a lot more square footage. We did widen the original 3' opening to 7' to access our breakfast nook, which began life as a porch. 18 years ago, we replaced the original cabinets with inexpensive yet custom ones to last until the "big" remodel.... which is now happening. And now, retired, I find that what I dreamed and planned for all those years was good for entertainment and learning of all the choices available, but was not what I truly needed, and especially not what I wanted to spend money on. No walls are coming down, but money is being spent to upgrade electrical and add additional lighting, A local cabinet maker/childhood friend of our children, will be installing natural hickory cabinets next week. I found granite at a local yard for $20-$30 less than exotic granite or quartz would cost. Original v joint paneling removed from behind the cabinets has been recycled into a built in banquette for the breakfast nook. I saw some beautiful tiles that were over $30 a square foot, nixed them, and found some that will be just as lovely for under $10. A new slide in range is the only appliance purchase.... my old one is 17 years old, and I love the idea of keeping gunk from getting between the range and cabinets. Yes, the final results will be quite different from what I once dreamed of having, and I know for me, that's a very good thing. At this stage in life, I refuse to compromise by spending over my budget. There are trips my DH and I need to take while we can, and horses I need to care for. Knowing I kept remodeling costs under control allows me to do those things, and that brings me great joy.

Picked up my mom and took her to a local nursery. She wanted a Peony, so I got her one that she really liked called Buckeye Belle, bright red. I planted it for her and got her birdbath out of winter storage, set it up and filled it.

The weather today was more like it should be after that weird snow we got on Friday night.

It was a beautiful day!

I spent the day at Amanda's and so did my Mother, so we had three generations of Mothers there. Dave's Mother and Grandmother were both there too, so we had a house full of mothers. His sister and the new twins were there, and his brother, SIL and their three including new baby Madeline, so we had three babies under the age of 6 months and 2 Great Grandmothers over 70. Dave grilled chicken and burgers and we sat around and had Irish Cream in our coffee while we took turns rocking babies and playing with the kids.

I got a new travel cup from Amanda and a hyacinth in a pot from the Grandkids, and a couple of flats of impatients from Ashley because she hates it when I plant the flower box full of herbs, LOL.

DH made breakfast and offered to take me out for dinner but I think going out on Mother's Day is a bad idea so we're going out tomorrow night. Got a bouquet of fresh flowers, a box of chocolates, some chocolate covered oreos, a gift certificate to I tunes and lots of phone calls. I like the phone calls the best! DD will be in town next week for a couple of weeks and is going to make a special Mom's dinner.

I sent my mother three DVDs: Casablanca, The Egg & I, and Murder at the Gallop. I know that she especially likes Miss Marple, and so she probably watched that one first. She had watched all three by the time I called her this afternoon. I thought my sister would be taking her out for brunch today, but she is at the Canadian Niagra Falls at the moment with her husband, who is doing biological research there. My brother in Texas was going to take her out for dinner today instead. She got a phone call from one granddaughter but not the other and nothing from the grandsons, which made me feel a bit sad for her. At least she liked the movies I sent her, even if they were ones that I had recorded from cable and then put on DVD myself. My father won't let her have cable TV, and so she likes getting cable shows however she can. I've bought whole series of TV shows for her, including a huge set of Perry Mason, which she was able to watch more than once, since after watching 35 shows, she could not remember exactly what happened in each one. I have three more movies I plan to send her next week: Song of the South, Midnight Lace (with Doris Day and Rex Harrison, supposedly a thriller, but I find it hilarious), and Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, which is set in West Texas, not that far from where my mother grew up. She might not like that movie, however, as Kevin thinks it might be too artsy, but maybe she will.

We had a great day, we went down to my folks with all my siblings and had a good time resting. My aunt, uncle and Grandma came which was even more special. I bought the girls each a miniature rose for being such good daughters and they got me a pink knock out rose (Keep in mind they are 6 and 4) Didn't even have to cook supper, I picked up pizza on the way home.

I fixed my favorite Mother's Day breakfast, it was just what I wanted and turned out perfect. It was too cold and windy, though, to eat out on the back porch. My kids gave me a six month subscription to Ancestry.com so we can make our family tree. We don't have much info, so this should be fun.

Alice brought me a lovely card, a dark chocolate Dove bar, and three baskets of perfect strawberries from her favorite road side patch. We went out together and shopped for a dress for her to wear for an award presentation on Tuesday at her school. And we bought angel food cake and Cool Whip (her preference) to go with the strawberries. I had a lovely day with my girl. Daniel is still out on the Pacific on his way to the Marquesas with no way to make contact. I hope to hear from him in the last week of May.

I got a card and a hanging basket of bright pink New Guinea impatiens and a funny card from my #2 son. My niece made a donation to Heifer Int'l for some baby chicks in my name. I liked that idea.

#1 son gave me a phone call and a bunch of excuses. I get the same thing from him every year, but he does remember my birthday and Christmas.

I gave my mom two planters of heliotrope and a card. I hope the plants do okay. They had gorgeous blooms on them. I've never had them before. Mom cooked dinner for us. It was one of her usual butter drenched meals and today my gall bladder is saying ouch.

Altogether a nice day. It was chilly and very windy. Today I am picking up branches.

I got a card and phone call from my Tennessee son and dinner with dh, daughter and her dh, and a good friend, we met half way between the houses in Rockwall Tx.; and a Ladder Ball game!

I received a rain barrel from my husband and a nice assortment of spices from Penzey's from my daughter (her mother's daughter! ;)

My mother doesn't need or want anything, so for her birthday and holidays, I make freezer meals. This time, I stocked the freezer with golabki and I also vacuum-sealed some marinated, grilled chicken breasts. And, made freshly-baked bread, of course. ;)

My mil likes Wal-mart gift cards.

All in all, a lovely day. Oh, we went to brunch with my folks. The most wonderful meal -- so filling that no one wanted anything else the rest of the day!

DH told me he plans to celebrate MD for me in two weeks when things settle down a bit.
