Replacement System Quote..Is it reasonable?

I live in Central NJ and having my AC and Furnace replaced. I had two guys come out with a third coming this week to assess my situation. For the most part both guys suggested similar equipment but please review the following and let me know if you think the pricing is good:

4 Ton System

Furnace - Trane XV80 TUD100R95V5K

Coil - 4TXCC049BC3HCA

AC - Trane XL15i 4TTX5048A1000A

$8285 (after Trane rebate)

Warranty 10 year Parts/ Only 1 year labor

The install will include a thermostat and new electrical disconnect box, new pad, and removal of the old system.

I do have a few issues, the first guy indicated that I may be wasting money with R410A vs R22 and thought "in our area we do not need anything more efficient than the XL14i." With that said, he didn't quote the XL14i since it was no longer available on his pricing schedule which seems about right since it appears that it may be discontinued.

Both guys thought I could save a few bucks by going with the XR80 and XR13 and really didn't push me one way or the other.

Am I doing myself a disservice by not looking at the 90%-95% efficiency units? I would have to have PVC venting put on the house if I went in that direction.

with today's high energy costs including nat gas only expected to go higher and not knowing your electric rate, I think an 80% eff furnace is a dinosaur unless paired with a heat pump. If electric rate is reasonable, then add a HP. If not step up to a 92-95% eff furnace. I think for AC, the XL14i or even the XR14 would be OK. If HP, go with the XL15i.

keep in mind same equipment is available from Am Std(Trane's sister company) and may be less expensive.

I only see that setup as a rated match with the 5-ton coil. Ask for the ARI reference number from the contractor with the furnace, coil and condenser included. I doubt he can provide one. I would only accept an ARI-certified match. The XL15i is a great unit. Don't have any humidity/heat up there? That setup with the 5-ton coil gets 14.5 SEER. Not a huge jump from 13 SEER, so you probably could save some money getting a net 13.5/14 SEER out of a XR13 (or whatever your efficiency may be).

Okay... I received updated AHRI reference numbers (and copies of the certificates) from the Bryant dealer for both the 60K and 80K furnace options. One thing I am concerned about is the clearance for the stack of equipment in the basement utility room. There is only a clearance of 63 inches to the bottom of the main supply duct. The Lennox dealer mentioned this, and the Bryant dealer took note of it as well, but here are the options the Bryant dealer has presented me with: 60K Unit AHRI # 4891891: Condenser: 187BNA036 Coil: CNPVP3717ATA Furnace: 355CAV04260 80K Unit AHRI #4891910 Condenser: 187BNA038 (same) Coil: CNPVP4821ATA Furnace: 355CAV060080 The coil for the 60K unit is 5 inches taller than the coil for the 80K setup. The total height of the stack (including a 2 inch base) for the 60K unit would be over 69 inches - that doesn't seem like it would fit. The 80K setup that they have specified still has a 64 inch height, which would mean the coil sticks part way into the supply duct - is this a significant problem? I have found the Bryant 2010-2011 product handbook so that is helping me to put together what I think is the ideal system. If I understand it, ideally I need for my use a 3 ton condenser, a coil that can handle at least 3 tons of cooling, a furnace that can provide at least 3 tons of cooling airflow (it looks like Bryant has two options here - 3.5 tons of airflow (042 series) or 5 tons (060 series). I need the combination to be less than 61 inches tall (to allow for the 2 inch base underneath and I want it to be eligible for the cooling tax credit (which I think means minimum 16 SEER/13 EER rating). I THINK I should be able to put that together, but I need to cross reference the overall design. Just a quick question - the coil and cooling airflow capacity can be oversized without adversely affecting things, correct? When we talk about correct sizing we are referring to the condenser and the furnace output right? Thanks again for any input. Ted

Yes, I would say you are being zipcoded. I have over 10 years experince in selling window s the prices you mentioned seem high, unless they are quoting you the windows installed and finished on the interior. There is quite a lot you need to understand about windows before you talk to someone about pricing. First, be very careful of Pella and any other roll formed clad window. The roll formed cladding traps moisture against the wood sash and rots them prematurely. You should stick to an extruded clad wood window or move to a fiberglass or vinyl, given your location. You also need to consider the long term implications of Energy Star qualifications, SHGC, Visible Light transmission and how these relate to daylighting and energy usage. Since we spend about 30% of our energy budget, understanding these issues could save you a bundle of money over the long term. I would start with Efficient Windows.org. From there I would see this web page that explains how these factors interrelate: Solar Heat Gain (SHGC), Visible Light Transmission (Vt), U-Value and Daylighting. After that, make sure that you get pricing for Loewen windows (made in your area) and a few more Marvin dealers. These days most manufacturers will make custom sizes without a large increase in cost for the cusom size. If you get that as an excuse from the salesman just tell him games overs and move on. With the businees in such poor shape these days, you are in control, do not be afraid to move on to another source. Get 50 prices if you need to, but get educated first and understand what you are buying and get a thorough, complete written specification and scope of work from the contractor to make sure that he is quoting you the right thing and not setting you up for a giant change-order. In most situations where you are dealing with replacement windows, you would count each operator in that unit separately. Example: A twin casement, in many cases is two mulled together casements. Based on that math, you have close to 29 units which makes that pricing you have there very aggressive and fair especially given the Everwood option.

Just had it done, for breakers were not working, threw the Main and power was still coming out....Federal Pacific! Quick Google, it is a hazard looking to happen. I had a licensed firm come in and do the job (so I'd have no problem from my insurance co if anything went wrong in the future.) My total cost was right at $2K - and I can sleep in peace now, knowing it is safe.

I live in central NJ (Princeton Area) and I purchased a Trane System in May (before the PSE&G rebate was reduced).

I had quotes from Home Depot, PSE&G, Sears, and a couple of local guys. I went with a local guy because the salesman "seemed" the most knowledgeable at the time.

I have a 2800 sq. ft 2-story home and purchased an XL15i 4ton AC and a XV95 100K btu furnace. It included a 10 year parts only and 2 year parts and labor warranty. (They initially tried to give me a 1 year but the Trane website indicated that if your purchase my system it comes with 2 years). I had problems with the install but the HVAC-Talk website helped me resolve them (wiring was set on timer instead of 2-stage). The final cost to me was $8600 after $1000 worth of rebates (Trane $300 and PSE&G $700).

Also my furnace is 4ttx5048a1000 95% Efficient
coil is TE50660
AC - Trane XL15i 4TTX5048A1000A with R410A

Keep in mind that 15i is not 15 seer for 4 ton units.
Mine stated 14.25 seer on the energy star sticker....I'm not sure what it is when matched to my coil.
