Recalls to Repair Gas-Fired Hot Water Boilers Due to Carbon Monoxide Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should contact the firm to arrange for a free repair. Name of product: NTI Trinity Gas-Fired Hot Water Boilers Units: About 4,800 Distributor: NY Thermal Inc., of Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada Hazard: Acidic liquid in a drain line can cause a fitting in the boiler to leak, posing a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning to consumers. Incidents/Injuries: NY Thermal Inc. has received one report outside of the United States of a leaking fitting resulting in a CO alarm activation. No injuries have been reported. Description: The recall includes NTI Trinity gas-fired hot water boilers with model numbers Ti100, Ti150, Ti200 and Ti400. The boilers were manufactured between November 28, 2005 and January 8, 2007. The Ti100, Ti150 and Ti200 are wall-mounted units, and the Ti400 rests on the floor. The boilers are gray in color and "NTI" appears on the front cover. The model number and date of manufacture are located on the ID label inside the front cover of the boiler. Sold by: Plumbing and heating contractors nationwide from November 2005 through February 2007 for between $3,000 and 8,500, depending on the model. Once a liner is installed in a flue, that chimney is no longer operable as a chimney. It is now a pipe chase. Adding another liner is ok, but it must fit. The liner for the pellet stove is Stainless. You may have room for another liner, but you will likely have to try to stretch the pellet liner to see if it will make space for the other liner. Can you side wall vent your new boiler? That is without doubt your best bet. What equipment are you planning on? Re lining a flue is a costly venture and with the higher efficiency gas equipment not necessary, and IMHO not desirable either. Your best be Btw, I've represented two chimney manuf and one liner manuf. over the years, so I've done some of this.

There are any number of good brand name boilers out there. Find out what your local contractor carries and make sure he services afterwood. Your old system has only a few components, whereas the new one comes with all kinds of safety controls and electronic parts. You will find installation is one thing and service is another. Generally people think of plumbers instead of heating conractors when it comes to boilers. Any plumber will install but they're not much on service. It may be down the road condidering the boiler is new but you never know. As far as boilers go anything you get will probably cut you bill in half. Being an 80 yr. old unit it must have been a conversion job which is very inefficient to begin with and second the water content in your new boiler will probably be about 14 gal. compared to maybe 50 or so in your one. Just the heating time of the wter and delivery to the heating units will be a big savings. Rember your old boiler was made for wood or coal, the new packaged boiler was made for gas. Depenking where you live you might have to get the chimney lined also to match the size of the vent pipe on the boiler. Just something to think about when pricing.

Our concerns are how difficult they each would be to install, difference in cost on the electric & water bills, etc. The first question is if you have sufficient space in your electrical panel to install a double pole breaker. Older homes, which I'm guessing yours may be, especially with gas appliances tend to have pretty small electrical panels. From there it's just a matter of running a circuit of the appropriate size. As for cost, there will be an yellow sticker on any water heater that will give you some idea of what it will cost to operate. Obviously that's an average and your experience will likely be somewhat different. There shouldn't be a change in your water bill unless you start using more (or less water). If you have no plumbing or electrical experience, this is a project best left to the pros.
