NY Thermal Inc. Recalls to Repair Gas-Fired Hot Water Boilers Due to

Carbon Monoxide Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in

cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary

recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should contact the

firm to arrange for a free repair.

Name of product: NTI Trinity Gas-Fired Hot Water Boilers

Units: About 4,800

Distributor: NY Thermal Inc., of Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada

Hazard: Acidic liquid in a drain line can cause a fitting in the boiler

to leak, posing a risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: NY Thermal Inc. has received one report outside of

the United States of a leaking fitting resulting in a CO alarm

activation. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall includes NTI Trinity gas-fired hot water boilers

with model numbers Ti100, Ti150, Ti200 and Ti400. The boilers were

manufactured between November 28, 2005 and January 8, 2007. The Ti100,

Ti150 and Ti200 are wall-mounted units, and the Ti400 rests on the

floor. The boilers are gray in color and "NTI" appears on the front

cover. The model number and date of manufacture are located on the ID

label inside the front cover of the boiler.

Sold by: Plumbing and heating contractors nationwide from November 2005

through February 2007 for between $3,000 and 8,500, depending on the

model.

Manufactured in: Canada

Remedy: Consumers should immediately contact the firm for instructions

and to arrange for a free repair.

Probable answers to your puzzle: (1). That most likely is your pressure relief valve. Normally they are set at 15#Âs and you must be exceeding that due to overfilling of boiler or failure or flooding of your expansion tank. Once they discharge too often and/or drip to long they usually donÂt seat properly again so, your problem needs to be discovered and then most likely have this valve replaced. (2). Sounds like an old style float/fill system yet, you state forced gravity with expansion tank but the sign verbage tells me steam?? Once I saw a very old weighted fill valve, perhaps thatÂs what you have but these date way before 1961. (3). The two thermostats can be one of to things; the inside one failed and they added an external, or, the external is a high-limit safety required by some jurisdictions. Even if there is a pressure gauge, they usually can not be trusted at that age. If your boiler is leaking at the relief valve, it is time for a professional to take a look at it. Sounds like your expansion tank system along with fill (pressure reducing feeder) along with the age of the boiler itself dictates an upgrade. I ask you this, how many cars have you purchased since 1961? You replaced your cars for the sake of reliability and safety right? Why not youÂre heating system then?

Should I replace my 30 yr old Weil Mclain hot water boiler?

We're in the same Boston area, and we have a natural gas boiler with steam heat. The boiler dates from the 1970s, and it works just fine. The water gets drained monthly. However, it's old enough to become problematic, and rather than take chances, we're thinking of replacing it. Besides, a new one would surely be more efficient. Several years ago Bay State Gas gave us an estimate for a Weil-McLain EG35. Prices rise, but at that time, the proposal was $6,430, including everything - electrician, labor, permits, boiler,stock & removal & 1-year service plan. A price like that is about what we see on line, We're just beginning our shopping, and trying to do our best in product quality, workmanship & price. People who know what they're doing (e.g. the staff at Economy Plumbing Supply in Dorchester) think the rebate is much higher than the $200 on the quote though, and we'd like opinions about boilers that might have been bought/installed by area homeowners. Has anyone had work done by Rob Weinstein, Al Pell or Bob Donahue? They seem like competent plumbers, and we plan to find comments on the 'net - and who can tell without experience?

Just some thoughts on improving your existing setup (it's probably got 20+ years' service life left): 1. Don't use a heating boiler for domestic hot water, especially in the summer. 2. Convert to gas if you're currently burning oil (and be sure to carefully clean heat transfer surfaces). 3. Provide as many zones as you can afford, schedule the temperatures with programmable thermostats; use one circulator with multiple zone valves instead of multiple circulators. 4. Arrange for fire on demand (if you have a cast iron boiler - don't do this with a steel boiler). 5. Provide a reset control to limit boiler temperature when it fires (I always liked Honeywell T475A); install the water sensor in the pipe, don't just strap it to the pipe surface. (This is another one not to do if you have a steel boiler). 6. Put in a stack damper (make sure it works properly). Had a good time with this stuff in my first home, a 1930's semidetached; started with a new Weil-McLain oil fired and went from there, over a 24 year period.
