Dirt/Sludge Buildup in Oil Tank

Hi,

Kind of long(sorry)

We have an underground 550 oil tank. It was installed in 1994. We have lived here for 6 years come September. We had one previous issue in winter 2002 after we had moved in with the filter/nozzle being extremely dirty and the furnace kicking on and not supplying adequate heat. Maybe the previous owners didn't clean the furnace the prior year. We do get our furnace serviced annually and had not had another issue since 2002 until yesterday.

Yesterday we noticed the hot water wasn't hot anymore. DH pushed the restart button on the h/w storage and it stayed on for about 30 seconds. Made a phone call to our HVAC tech and what he found was a completely dirty filter/nozzle. We just had our furnace service on January 26, 2007. It has not even been 6 months and we turned the heat off early May, so the only time the furnace has kicked on is for h/w.

The tech suggested that maybe we should have the oil tank cleaned since it seems there is dirt/sludge in the tank. This tech does not do it so he has no vested interest.

Does this cleaning actually work and how much would it cost? What is the process and I am wodnering if it could possibly damage the tank itself causing a leak somewhere.

We realize that we will need to switch to an above ground tank in the next few years, but if we could buy some time with a relaitvely less expensive cleaning right now, we may opt for that.

One more question,

When we did get our last oil delivery in February, it was so bitterly cold outside and we also used a new company. Three days after delivery, DH measured with a dip-stick(PVC Pipe) our oil supply and it was almost 60gal down. We use about 40gal per week in the winter. Thought maybe the guy jipped us since we were new, but it had a metered receipt. We talked with our HVAC tech and he said "maybe" since it was so cold out on delivery day, the oil was foaming and when it hit the tank it condensed and we were short on the oil in the tank. Now we are wondering if we possibly had gotten some sludge from the new delivery company and that it settled and that is why we were down 60gallons and now we are dealing with clogged filters and nozzles. Opinions??

Thanks for all your help.
