Herb and spice storage jars

Until I started looking for herb and spice storage jars, I had no idea just how difficult it was going to be. Time was, you could get them easily from your supermarket, but now, even specialist kitchen-supply places don't have them.

You CAN buy filled jars. You CAN buy jars complete with racks. Most of the time you get filled jars plus rack. But you can't get empty jars minus the racks.

I've given the internet a fair work-out, and have had friends keeping eyes peeled on my behalf, but no luck so far.

I prefer the Ikea ones, but even they are a bit too large - I'd prefer the diameter to be closer to 4cm.

Thing is, I want at least 30 of them! And I can't get either of the above because I haven't got a credit card, and can't get to the store.

Sigh.

And if you think finding the jars is difficult, imagine trying to find blank, printable, stick-on spice-jar labels!!

Does anyone else have a similar problem?

Daisy, you can find printable labels at any office supply store.....can't help you on the jars, though.

Crushed Tomatoes from the Ball complete book of Home Preserving. Ahh makes a big difference! ;) Yes that is a safe recipe and very different from Stewed Tomatoes. And the separation, the floating, you saw is common. You can gently shake the jar or just ignore it and they will settle all on their own with some time. So then in theses recipes i can only use dried spices not fresh and no veges, but i can use most dried spices and dried veges,dried mushrumes, dried etc or am i taking it over board to the next level? You can use dried spices, yes. They don't change the pH. Just do it carefully as the dried spices will intensify during storage. Too much can ruin the whole jar. Dried vegetables is another matter. They DO change the pH and they can also change the density. They have to be rehydrated before adding them and you need to rehydrate them in vinegar or bottled lemon juice, not in water, and they can be used only in very small amounts. Don't make assumptions about recipes without checking first. That can easily get you into trouble. ;) Dave

I am preparing for my father's memorial service on Tuesday, but I will print out this list and look on Wednesday if not before. What I am showing you still need are Fennel Thyme Ancho Allspice Chervil I know I have a lot of ancho -- that is one I ordered a pound of and then found a bag. I will also send you some pasilla negro chili powder -- it is a lovely rich flavor, deeper than ancho, but similar in terms of mildness. I may have fennel, thyme and allspice, but will have to check. I have a friend who has not been to Penzey's and requested that I take her. That is on my list of things I am going to treat myself to after the service, and we'd better go quick or the summer schedules will begin and we won't be able to get together. Between Annie and I, we should be able to get anything headed your way soon.

Since you've seen my spice drawer, that is a 24 inch frameless drawer. I have one for spices and one next to it for utensils. Having my spice drawer meant having a utensil crock on the counter for the other utensils. Anyway, that drawer holds about 110 jars and that the round ones. They allow me to get my fingers in between the tops. The narrower top on the Victorian jars should also. Mine are 2.25 inches wide while the Victorian are 2 inches. I don't know the width of your drawer, but you would get more of the Victorian in the same space as mine. That's a lot of spice jars. Have you figured out how many you can fit or how many you need? I know some folks balk at the idea of buying matching jars or having to set them all up, but the ease of use over the years has been well worth it. I also bought a Brother label maker with laminated tape for the tops. It was a good excuse for an upgrade -- and they seem to go on half price sale fairly often. The laminated tape keeps them cleaner than regular labels or paper tape. I've been using these for close to 8 years now and I'll never go back. I know that drawers are tough to give up, but when you think about how much cabinet or pantry space you free up, it's a lot easier. I would stay with a top drawer if at all possible -- the jars are right there at your fingertips when you need them. I was supposed to have a 4 drawer stack where I would up with a 3, so I looked at adding a roll-out tray inside the top of that middle drawer. I haven't done it, but that could be an option for you in terms of getting some of the organization you might like in the deeper drawers.

Daisy, I see the ebay seller will accept Money Orders or a Bank Cheque so a credit card wouldn't be necessary. Scroll down to the bottom for information on the payment options.

Also, Avery Australia provides a list of purveyors for their labels. To the left on the page I've linked to you'll also see tabs to access their various label products.

If you don't see a local office supply franchise on their list you can often arrange to phone their main site, place an order and pay by cheque. As with the ebay bottles, there's a slight delay while the cheque clears but otherwise all should be well.

You could try Specialty Bottle. They've got jars, tins, bottles and at pretty reasonable prices (with case discounts too!). Their "HERB4" glass bottle with shaker is only $0.80 each. If you don't like that one, they have a bunch of other styles to choose from. They're not as pretty as Carol's, but it's a start! :)

I love Specialty Bottle, but Seattle isn't that far away from me. The problem with shipping glass is the weight issue. It really raises the shipping costs. (Especially to Australia, LOL.)

Check craft stores, bead stores, even hardware stores. And in a place like WalMart etc look into different departments.
