Bosch Vision $400 rebate coupon- should I be scared?

I posted a few days ago about my broken 2002 Bosch WFL 2060. After much thought, I decided no to wrangle with repair people when I can get a new washer for as much as a couple of repair visits (and I'm convinced that the current problem will be a few visits worth). Not to mention that my family does more laundry now than it used to, so a larger-capacity washer would be very nice.

Right now, Bosch is offering a $400 rebate on the Vision 500 washer. That seems like an astounding deal and my suspicions are immediately raised- why would they give such a rebate unless they want to get rid of the things?

With my current reasoning, I figure the thing will conk out in 5-7 years no matter what brand I buy so I might as well pay as little as possible. With the rebate, I can get the Vision 500 for $495. Not bad for on-board heater and 1200 rpm spin. UNLESS..... they're pure junk.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I'm getting the Bosch at the link with the rebate. So about $900 instead of $1300.

Ah CT - here we spent $90 last month for 4000 sq feet - with just ASHP.... but that was mostly A/C (and lights etc). Are you still heating in CT? To respond to the previous poster. Geothermal works great in the South (just like the North) - its just that it is overkill most of the time. My audit suggested I'd save $300 a year with geothermal but that was based on a reference house - it was down to about $100 compared to HE ASHP. Try to get $100 a year to ever payback - sure it saves money but you could save more clipping a coupon a week without the $20k upfront cost. How is this thread still alive? The savings of geothermal compared to oil in the North is amazing. Compared to ASHP in the South - it is pennies. There is an ad line that says installing geo is like taking 2 cars off the road. They must be some pretty efficient cars.... Unless you are comparing to oil in the North. The average car driving 12,000 miles a year costs about $2000 in energy (20 mpg at $3 a gallon). The average house uses less than that for HVAC. Cost is not the only concern but there is nothing clean about gas in a car - at least electricity can be clean.... CONC: Insulate and use geothermal if you can do horizontal loop or live in the North and your alternative is not NG. And drive a hybrid and/or right sized car. And don't use incandescent bulbs for lights on frequently.

Joining the party a bit late - but going through the same issues on our kitchen redesign. Should be easy as I am only dealing with cooking. After a month of reading reviews and playing with ovens and cooktops, I think I decided on the following: Wolf e series oven (was very close to the elux icon as I loved the racks). Final decision - size of the oven, 2 convection fans and on sale! Wolf 36 inch induction cooktop - Ann Arbor building inspectors are following the make up air handling very strictly and need to keep the vent under 400cfm or would have to add a make up air system - which outweighed the benefits. Also considered the miele, thermador, and a late addition - JennAire - but the sleek look of the Wolf won plus it is on sale. GE Advantium Monogram speed oven - This will be over the Wolf oven and I think it will look OK - similar handles and overall appearance. Also considered the Miele and Elux. I have a newer Elux French door fridge and love it - it has the LED lighting.(but no ice/water through the door) It cost a bit more than some others but it has saved me $$ in less wasted food. When I headed out of town for 2 weeks urgently and returned with the milk and lettuce still usable - need I say more? Also, I took my favorite serving dishes and tested the various units -the elux was set up best. I also have a Miele dishwasher. It is several years old and I will re-use it. It is so quiet that I have to put my ear near to verify it is running. The door pops open to assist in drying at the end of the cycle. I also took my favorite dishes to try in the dishwasher - I can put 14 place settings in the dishwasher and run my china and crystal in the dishwasher! Hope I made the right decisions on the new appliances - the posts have been helpful!

FWIW, according to this site the GE Profile Harmony Washer Model: WPGT9360E has "HydroHeaterÂ Â Increases wash temperature to reduce bacteria and provide better cleaning for the really tough stains". It doesn't give a lot of info on specifics though. My only comments on the heater debate are 1) how often does one actually use the heater; and 2) On what cycles does the heater activate? I often see on "heated" machines that it only works on certain cycles and at certain times. (Excepting of course machines like the Miele that only have cold inlet and heat everything according to the cycle.) I've seen a lot of frontload owners express concerns that they can't heat the water when they want to. Before spending a lot more on a machine with a heater for the sake of having a heater, I'd want to know if that heater is going to serve my needs and wants. If it doesn't give me what I want, it's not worth much more, is it? If you could get a true profile wash, then a heater could be useful at least occasionally. If you can't, then I'm not sure how much actual value it would be unless you want to go to the trouble of simulate a profile wash. I can do that now. One other thought I've expressed before is the temperature of the heated water. Many seem to only do about 150Â°, I can't help but wonder what I get that I don't already have with the possible benefit of maintaining the temperature through the cycle. But then... 20-30 minutes per cycle on my machine verses 1-2 hours on a heated machine... Does mine need a heater to maintain the heat? I guess I would like people to be able to consider as much info as possible when making this decision. I know my head is spinning these days!! Maybe the old washboard is better for us feeble-minded people!

Just bought new glasses at Zenni. They're not bad, but not the quality I got at Sam's Club. Progressive lenses, anti-glare coating, clip-on sun glasses and new frames for $110 is a good deal for a backup pair. last pair at Sam's Club was $250, and the optometrist's office it was $400 + two years before. I call shenanigans on the story about the upside-down lenses. Even as a child getting glasses for the first time, I would have known if the glasses made things **worse.** As someone else pointed out, if one's eyes could adjust that much, we'd just exercise until we didn't need glasses, wouldn't we? In a former life, I had an optician that griped about me buying contact lenses *not through him* and told me it was illegal (sometime in the early 1980s). It would have been easier to purchase through him, but his office was so disorganized it always took multiple trips to get the right ones. Last time I went, I bought the one box for each eye, and went home to order them through the internet.

I called and was told it was a $200 rebate on Vision washers. I did see on the "abes" link above the $400 rebate (mfg). Can ANYONE tell us how to find the correct information and is this until the end of Feb, 2010?
I need more info as I need to make a decision tomorrow. I bought a Whirlpool, they took the first one back, said to go ahead and use the 2nd one, but not happy with it. I've been offered a Frigidaire 8000, but that seems to be an older model (they've had on the floor for a while).
I guess basically, I'm ready to find out ANYTHING about these 2 washers.

I did finally find something on the Bosch site. It appears that there is a $200 rebate on the washer and a $200 rebate on the dryer (total $400 if you buy both). Has to be the 500 series. I only plan to buy a washer. My dryer is fine for now.

I just placed the order with Abe's of Maine because they had 3 rebates- the $200 Bosch rebate and 2 $100 rebates through Abe's of Maine, one of which was good only on purchases made through the 15th- ending tonight. So $400 off on their already low price of $895 for that washer? Even if it's a crummy washer, I will ultimately only have spent $495.

PLEASE thoroughly check out AJ Madison before buying anything from them. Reseller Ratings gives them a 4.5 out of 10. I bought a Silgranit sink from them, and Blanco refused to honor the warranty because it was not purchase from an "authorized" reseller. When I asked AJ Madison how they could be selling products for which they weren't "authorized", I never got an answer and was always transferred to someone's voicemail who would never return my call.

Beware of AJ Madison.
